Nope. Lightning until they go full wireless. Apple really hates ports of any kind.

Exactly. Different demographic they’re going for with these $800-$2000 iPad Pros. Targeted users will say they “need” USB-C, whereas the iPhone users (tens of millions) will take more advantage of wireless charging and the billions of Lightning cables they already own or they can find in every hotel/airport around the world.

What do you think will be possible to do with that USB-C? Genuine question. External harddrives, for example, won't be read. Card-readers? I'm ignorant enough to not know what to do with USB-C (I hardly ever use my ports on my MBP - charging and the occassional usb thump-drive/external harddrive/card-reader). What warrants USB-C on the iPad over Lightning?

All of the above. Connect to pro-level cameras to pull in and edit photos, connect 5K external display to see those results, etc. I haven’t been one arguing for USB-C connectivity, but considering the Apple laptop/desktop line is full-on USB-C now, the “Pro” iPad can follow suit.

If you want to live with Windows then, by no means, go get the surface or whatever and maintain the system yourself. Because you never know when an update gonna wipe out your data.

Haven’t owned a windows machine in 10 years. iOS just doesn’t do everything people still need. And how are those bricked watches working out?

Very nice, but the US$949 price for the 256 GB 11-inch iPad Pro is just silly. Especially now that Apple still sells the 10.5-inch iPad Pro for $799 for the 256 GB model--one that still has a headphone jack and still has a Lightning connector.

A poor analogy considering the headphone jack is still superior in many ways to wireless technology. Have fun using airpods and other BT devices in crowded airports, etc.

I never have issues with BT headphones in crowded airport - they eliminate the issue f cables getting caught on other people's luggage and my current headphones block out noise very well.

Anyone know if there'll be a way to pair this with the older model Apple Pencil? Thinking perhaps a USB-C to lightning cable, plus the male-female lightning converter that comes with the pencil, could do it? Thoughts?

I don't think so:

Anticipating the higher range prices

I guess I’m not a true early adopter after all. Immediate orders for 12.9 gen 1 & 2 with keyboard case and pencil, but this round is too rich for my blood. Was even looking to get some retail therapy on a splurge for the new one.

It’ll cost me close to $2000 CAD to get a new setup with those accessories, which I can’t justify even after selling the current rig.

Tho the gen 4 is going to be kick-ass too, and stable on the bezel design for a while hopefully, so worth the wait.

But this new one is a beautiful beast and I’m super happy for everyone who is ready to Buy! I was over the moon getting my gen 2 and love it every day still :)

Counter-question: What kind of work do you regard as "serious"?
anything that is more simple with a actual keyboard and a trackpad/mouse. Day trading on a iPad is basically impossible. Charting on a touch screen is just horrible. Flipping between applications to buy and sell quickly id never trust an iPad to do any kind of stock trading. Managing a business with an iPad is also equally frustrating. Its the mobile os that is limiting with a lot of things. Drawing and doing small tasks and possibly photoshop now seem ok, but id still like to test out photoshop to see if its a frustrating experience in comparison to an actual desktop/laptop. There are just some things a touch screen/mobile os system isn't good at doing. Thats why I treat an iPad as media consumption device with some artistic benefits.

Watch has nothing to do with iOS. Don’t get it twisted. You are happy with whatever you have or not happy with what you don’t have. Who cares.

I just cancelled my 11” order from today morning. Too expensive for my usage profile, so I will stick with my Air 2 for another year. I really think they took the price increase too far, especially with the accessories, e.g. smart cover.

My wife’s Air needs to be replaced, so waiting for Back Friday deals for the normal 9.7 model.

I agree on the price. I've been tempted to cancel my order as well.

I care, they care, people care. Next question please..

That we see this stuff explained over and over speaks volumes. No matter what you do though no one NEEDS this new iPad. Even businesses are slow to upgrade staying on old versions of windows seemingly forever.

Rationalizing a purchase is a thing.

Anyone ask if the USB-C on the iPad Pro can charge via a USB-C adapter from a MacBook Pro. Would make sense if it could but Apple doesn't always do things that make sense. Wish the iPhone had gone USB-C because once again now my headphones that I got with my new iPhone, not only don't connect to my new MacBook Pro but won't connect to my new iPad Pro either.

Speak for yourself. My question is what is the limit of iOS that you keep babbling about?

I Mean I would love to have one of these if I can get my work done on one. But I've always gone back to my laptop at the end of the day. I also have my iPad mini as my car stereo and works really well. For me all these are good for are just quick little things that might improve somethings in my life. Ill probably stick to my mini 2 for a while longer.

As an accountant I could never really use one. I can barely make a Mac work for me but only because it can run windows. Admittedly I’m locked into my field and don’t really consider others. My wife is a teacher but she’s locked into what the feds do. Which isn’t apple.

I still shake my head that so many seem confused between what a desktop can do vs an iPad running a mobile OS. I guess I take my experience for granted. But I consider the iPad just a toy. Fun to use. Can compliment some of what I do. But not worth spending too much on.

I guess some people can use these for real work. Id love being an artist and having this as my only tool but its a stretch to see how one wouldn't get frustrated with some things.
I think these are overpowered for what they deliver. There really needs to be a revamped os for iPads imo. ITs long overdue compared to how powerful they are. To run basically a phone OS.

Multitasking. File transfer. Data storage. It’s been said about 1000 times already. iOS just can’t do it like Mac. Period. When I can run multiple apps on top of one another including multiple instances of the same app, resize them at my will and place them where they enhance my work flow, then I’ll find iOS more usable. Oh and I still can’t deal with zip files in iOS without a cumbersome process. iOS is pretty, but not terribly functional. Partly because apple wont, not because it can’t. But I repeat myself.

iPad Pro still can’t replace the laptop for me, so I’m finding the cheap iPad & pencil as a MacBook companion is better than a stand-alone iPad Pro. And sadly the companion solution may be cheaper than iPad Pro & accessories.

You're describing one and pretty limited use-case. As has been said before, you're extremely locked in your very own point of view.

Again, what holds true for you does not automatically apply to others. You, and @cardfan, are downgrading all those who ARE using the iPad in a professional context doing serious work just because you can't seem to wrap your head around it. iPad and iOS is not for you. That's fine. But it IS for many. Get over it.

As has been said many many times by now. For some, the iPad is complimentary at best. But for some, it does work perfectly as their stand-alone computing device. It's really not that hard to understand...

My God those prices...
Yeah, after dropping $$$ on XS Max, the AW4 SS. I'm done for a while.
The ONE thing I need though is an iMac upgrade (A jacked up iPad Pro is far more expensive than a 2,3 year old iMac 27in). My 2015 iPad Pro is fine, no need to upgrade that.

My MAIN device, computer I use 99.9% of the time iMac works...but is in fact pretty old now. Mohave can't even be installed on it, I'm still on El Capitan. High Sierra is an option but it may be pushing this computers limits over the edge.

Bottom line is, if you think it’s too expensive don’t buy one.

I don't. I am in the market for either a good tablet, or a new laptop, but have no intention of rewarding this round of profiteering.

The exchange rate changes will have their impact on the non-US markets anyway.
