These aren't age groups that generally are going to have $4000 (after tax) left for VR headsets after buying their gaming PC's and consoles. Not only that, no compelling games were announced.

I hope others here understand that this headset is an entire standalone computer with its own restricted ecosystem. Can you receive video and HID input from devices outside of this ecosystem?

Most other headsets are just that, the head mounted display and the input devices. There is a big cost difference there, being a standalone computer on your head, along with the HDMI and USB cable tethered.

I really don't know who's buying this.
£3.5k for something totally unnecessary?!
I don't want apps floating around in front of my eyes thanks very much.
I can see it would be nice for gaming or movies but there are cheaper options and I bet that battery will drain fast.
There's some nice tech ideas involved but it feels more like a prototype.
Not for me.

This place makes me laugh.

$3500 no way this will fail!
*apple also reveals a new Mac Pro that starts at around $5000*
Wow amazing new Mac Pro! How exciting!
There is a major difference in this and a $5000 Mac Pro.

People don't buy a $5000 Mac Pro to watch movies and read emails. It's often their livelihood. This on the other hand is mostly a media consumption device.

So comparing the two with price is like comparing Apples to Oranges, no pun intended.

Can’t wait to see reviews of this thing. I think it’s good for the price and can see getting a 2nd or 3rd gen one.
not sure whether the media attendees would be given a chance to touch on it, or just allowed to make some photos (like the event day of original iPhone in Jan. 2007)

Yes, almost certainly.

It will either involve something like this where the glasses are no more obtrusive than eye glasses, or where the displays are projected rather than worn.

This reminds me way too much of devices used in stories where we *have* blown ourselves up. Ready Player One, at least one Star Trek episode comes to mind, though I can't remember all the details. An alternate, dystopian version of the ship, has lost its holodecks and stuff, they are using a (still much smaller, wireless) device like this to escape their dystopian reality. The alternate captain wears it . . . in his death scene, while the ship blows up around him.

Reminds me of 3D tvs and self driving cars.

Clearly, there was no way Apple were going to hit a price that would see version one sell by the boatload. What this looks like is am almost there product, like the first iPhone. I think this represents the future of MMI and I hope, for Apple’s sake, that they can scale up/price down before the competition catches up. This is what Zuck quit made right!

Nobody needs to go through that much trouble to have a 3D screen in front of them. Actual screens are already 3D and in front of us… and you don’t need to wear skiing goggles to the office to view them.

Probably the second biggest day since January 9th, 2007.
Honestly, I think you're not far off. Will I buy it? Nope, not yet, I didn't even get an iPhone until 4. It's a 1st gen device, I think as time goes on, we will see it mature and become more robust.

No thanks, Apple. Come back when you can offer me this instead

I was hoping to see that there was some AI powered rendering of your face based on a true depth scan and the headset's own camera's and sensors.

edit: nevermind, I spoke too soon, they do have that.
Yeah with very horrible animations to the virtual avatar.

It is an entire computer, so it could replace your laptop. You can use it wired for watching movies for example. Not really a prototype but it is for sure the start of a new thing that will keep evolving.

Although Apple didn't invent AR/VR, we know how influent it is on the market. It was just like the iPhone, Apple didn't invent the phone, but made it better. This product is the future, whether we like it or not. It will pave the ways for technology, I'm glad I'm alive to see that!

I've been buying Apple products since the 1980's.... I'm a HUGE Apple fan. My whole ecosystem is Apple.

But the delusion of some people on these forums is just mind-blowing.

"This is going to destroy the big tv and projector market" - People like to watch TV and movies together.

"Will absolutely crush any Quest model at gaming" - That would require actual good games for this. At a price-point gamers (mostly late-teens and 20's) can afford for a device.

I would partially tend to agree with you. I mean any married geek would still be fine with this when they are in their cave playing their favourite game or I don't know. Watching their favourite sport?

At least as a single guy thats what I can think of.

But then again yes, as you say, socialising is not something you can, or should, take away.

I'm still new to the VR market so I know very little. Knowing Apple you would not be able to use this on a games console. But then where are we headed? I need a VR headset for every use case? That on its own is borderline ridiculous. That I have to pay 3500 just to see a floating facetime bubble then ...
