Existing products sre nothing like this capability. There is nothing on the market now much much cheaper. Nothing even close.

Which is why VR is not currently a mass market product, despite there being products in the market since the early 1990’s. The suggestion was we’ll all have one of these in a few years, but people aren’t going to pay out £1k+ for something they might use for a bit of fun from time to time. Sony have a VR headset for £499+ currently and they must be a reason so many are on the secondhand market already. A lot needs to be done to convince consumers this now 30 year old concept is not just a gimmick. A £4000 attempt by Apple isn’t really helping that cause.

I feel like only Apple can get away with this.

Revolutionary 😂🤣😂🤣 you'll look like Bender from Futurama after a trains hit his face! Or maybe Bender in full on 'pimp' mode 🤣. Bargain price and US only too. Nah something that does just the same as my phone? But closes me from the real world, you can keep it.

Apple is way way way off the mark here.

This is a new product and it's not for everyone. For instance I hate watches. I will not get one even if it's as nice as the ones Apple sells. But I am into VR, so I am a maybe on this one. I need to try one on at the store first before I sell my soul kidney. 🤣

This will obviously be a low sales volume product and future iterations will become better and also cheaper. A $3500 toy is not designed for the masses, but for crazy tech enthusiasts like myself 🤷‍♂️Luckily I am single and don't have to worry about a nagging significant other who wants one too 😅
The timing on this release means I can tell my significant other to make it my Christmas present. So this can really work both ways lol.

There is a major difference in this and a $5000 Mac Pro.

People don't buy a $5000 Mac Pro to watch movies and read emails. It's often their livelihood. This on the other hand is mostly a media consumption device.

So comparing the two is with price is comparing comparing Apples to Oranges, no pun intended.

The Mac Pro is double the price though (actually starts at 7k)

And some people will use this for work. A lot of the keynote was devoted to people working from home.

Let's set up a betting site. I will happily take all the bets from folks who claim it's going to flop HARD.
It's a very niche market to begin with and Apple knows that. It's targeting a very small segment of that market and it's "priced" accordingly to make it worth producing. So "flop" is a relative term.

If their "Vision" is that every household, individual will have one of these, then clearly it will flop because you and I both know that isn't going to happen. Not until a few generations down the road at a more reasonable prices given they stick with it.

There are plenty of Apple users who will purchase this day 1 and several segments in the professional industry that will utilize this but this is not an average joe product. If someone is thinking that the average joe is going to purchase this and wear it all over while flying, out at a café, capturing their 3d moments of their kids , consuming media etc as the entire presentation portrayed, then yes, it very well may be a flop.

Love the ideas and ideals behind the product. Love the technology and engineering that's gone into it. Love the push for augmented reality to "improve" our lives.

Don't love the fact that you create a 3D game-like avatar of your face for calls, or the idea of children having their parents witness special moments of their life with this on their face.

The design is amazing for what it can do, but there's no getting around the fact that it covers most of your face, even with the mitigating technologies Apple has built in to it.

This thing is downright cool. But it's still a solution in search of a problem.

I was very skeptical during rumor time of the AR/VR headset - now that we know what this really is, I do want to try it out, but, a demo in an Apple Store won't do it ... Apple needs to figure out a way that you can run this for a couple days at least before committing ...

It's a little strange that it's coming out next year, but it's using the M2. You'd think they could get an M3 in there by then and increase its battery life.

I already have over 5k worth of homecinema gear in my apartment. Sure, years ago i tried those "big screen" cinema apps on a oculus rift etc, those were nice and would be way nicer with apple's gear and implementation, but paying that much for a single user experience...no way !

The return period is probably the best we’ll get, unfortunately.

Those specific instances made me cringe. The avatar of the face thing reminded me that audio only will be best. And the parental moments reminded me of people filming concerts on their smartphones rather than just sitting back and enjoying them.

Fail. Too early and too bulky, even though it's a first generation model. Who is this for? Just people at home? Are people really going to wear these full time outside the home? Not a chance. What about people who wear glasses? Will this be comfortable long term with frames?
As someone who wears glasses, I'm honestly not quite sure if I wanna try this.. not exactly sure if it may affect my vision level in the long term or something. 🙃

If I buy this headset, which will eventually arrive in Europe for 4200€ after tax, this will be third most expensive item I own, after my house and my car. I understand that new tech is always expensive at first (see first Tesla vehicles or the first personal computers for example), but VR/AR headset are NOT a new tech in 2023, and we have seeing this type of device for years. It is difficult for me to really comprehend how Apple wants to charge this kind of money for this product. Im speechless.
