Can someone chime in on whether or not Google ever established partnerships with major stores and credit card companies for Android?

Google Wallet allows you to register any credit or debit card as your payment method.

The way that I understand Google's payment method works, is that Bancorp issues you a virtual prepaid Mastercard. Your phone is constantly being given a small set of limited timeframe, temporary card number & verification token values, that are downloaded when you have an internet connection.

When you touch your phone to the merchant's NFC reader, the Wallet app gives one of the preloaded tokens to the merchant's machine, which then asks Mastercard/Google for authorization. Google matches up the token code, charges your real registered payment card, and sends back an authorization okay to the merchant.

To the merchant, it was just a prepaid Mastercard. The merchant never sees your real account numbers. Also, listening in would not help a thief, since the tokens are one-time use only.

In other words, Google made a partnership with Mastercard to be their virtual card "maker" for external use. Internally, that "card" actually charges any kind of card you want.

I'm just wondering if this a new thing or will Apple simply frame it as doing NFC 'right' and 'secure'.

Apple will probably be adding easy ways to use coupons, etc, along with emulating more kinds of cards.

No it's fine.

I just think it's sad that the western world is so far behind the times with using your phone for payments, even if small payments, when some poor 3rd work countries have been using it for ages even with dumb phones

I think it's a lot harder for developed countries to implement these sort of technologies and make them pervasive as opposed to 3rd world countries essentially starting from the beginning.

This payment system has to launch worldwide. They can't afford to roll this out in America first. I mean we are still waiting for iTunes Radio n the UK

That's the record labels' fault, not Apple's.

You can transfer pics right now with the play memories app. This happens over wifi, the NFC just makes it easier by creating the wifi connection and launching the app for you (on android(.

On iOS you have to start the app on the camera, go to settings on your phone and connect to the cameras network, then launch the app.

There is no guarantee apple will allow NFC to be used that way unfortunately. They might really lock it down.

Now I can use NFC to transfer pics from my sony full frame camera now. Sweet

For anyone who knows anything about Walt Disney World, it would be really cool if you could use the iP6 or iWatch as your Magic Band...

I, for one, am thrilled about the NFC addition. I was highly disappointed when it didn't make the iPhone 5 generation.

The Fry "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" picture will have to be updated. Cash will be obsolete.

You don't need to use NFC to purchase stuff at an Apple Store now....so why would Apple want to move to NFC ? I would think it's not necessary these days to make a purchase. Maybe they've got something better, cheaper, easier and more secure?

I thought contactless payment was always limited to small purchases (no more than £20 here in the UK). I can't see the use of that in an Apple Store when most purchases are upwards of £200.

Highly misleading rumor reporting. The NFC stuff in the linked story seems to be about Disney and McDonald's, not Apple. This story is actually about Apple expanding their iBeacon technology.

I've yet to see anything that would indicate Apple has a legitimate interest in NFC. What's more, implementing NFC goes against logic, since Apple is pushing their own competing (and superior) standard based on the much more popular Bluetooth LE. Anything you can do with NFC, you can do with iBeacons, better. Putting NFC chips in everything would be a waste of precious space and battery life.

I know NFC is popular with some folks here, which is why MacRumors keeps fanning those flames, but seriously, guys, look at the two technologies, and explain to me why Apple would ever, ever want to use NFC instead of iBeacons?

The technology is far more widespread and useful now than it was when the iPhone 5 debuted. Apple didn't include it because they believed the technology not to be worth while at the time.

Actually, rolling out in America first makes the most sense. Canada, Europe and Asia have already made large investments into NFC and pin and chip technologies. They will be reluctant to adopt Apple's solutions until it is proven in America first.

America is untapped and host to so much fraud that it's a perfect start for Apple.

It reminds me of iTunes and record labels back around 2000. They resent Apple now (even after Apple saved them) but with all the piracy they were facing from Napster, Apple offered the only hope at the time. Apple isn't the only hope here but compared to Google Wallet and the credit card companies own offerings, Apple is the best looking solution.

Why does everyone have to pit NFC and Bluetooth against each other? They are different but also complimentary. NFC has already turned up in so many hardware leaks that it's foolish to deny that Apple is looking to work with it. Back in 2012 there were some statements against NFC made by Apple but 2 years is a long time in the tech industry. Things change and Apple has been known to do an about face in much less time that that.

Apple has $150B that would say otherwise. They can afford basically anything.

They can afford anything that is for sale but some things are not for sale. Namely content contracts and negotiations. They have been trying to figure out how to deliver content from cable companies for years now and have been unsuccessful. Some things are too complex or bureaucratic for even the largest of companies.

Nice twist on logic there :D

So Apple did not wish to lead, so now they will only wait till others have established a standard, and only then they will be late to the table and implement something themselves.

That's strange as I usually hear that Apple are leading, ahead of everyone else, and set a standard, putting it in place then everyone else catches up.

I need no meme images, let me just say... shut up. Period. NFC; Noone Flippin Cares. :p

I know about playmemories app, was hoping for something a little simpler such as NFC, but your right, they may lock it down where regular NFC connections won't work. Hope not though

Actually some people do care to have NFC.

Actually some people do care to have NFC.

I'm glad someone "cares"... awww, how sweet :)

Haven't had NFC in phone myself, but the touch to pay in the UK is useful - it's so much quicker in queues to buy things especially if you don't need a receipt - chip and pin is cheque writing slow by comparison.

It's an ease of use that just notches your expectation of transactions.

Good old NFC - gives the banks much more excuse to shoulder-shrug when you call and report illegitimate transactions. Convenience is king, security is "old fashioned"... genius...

Okay.
