Here is a GIF comparing the current and potential colors:

I'm digging the blue, but nothing quite compares to the colors of the iPod nano chromatic.

INNOVATION!!!!! WHO said Apple lost it's mojo!

Nano and Shuffle is almost useless without a firmware update that supports offline listening on Apple Music. For the love of music this should be the first device that supports such thing.

I agree. Without a SIM, my use for these devices is non existent. I would not mind a Nano with bluetooth headphones and a SIM card for data or a good way to get Apple Music (music I don't own) on the device so that I don't have to carry my 6 plus when I run. I have adjusted to the size but have thought many times about a 4S or something added to my calling plan just for the one use of exercise.

I still do not understand why they did not release these iPods before the holidays. What would have stopped them from doing so? They could have sold a bunch as Christmas gifts for kids.

If Apple really wants to reinvigorate the iPod touch, they should reinvent it. Like I mentioned earlier, perhaps rename it an iPad nano. Offer it in 4.7" or 5.5" sizes. It's so much more than a music player. There is huge untapped potential here. Exploit it. Perhaps market the iPod touch as the definitive portable camera for travel photogs. Give it the best camera available. I think if Apple remarkets the iPod touch, they could have a real winner. They have to make it compelling since so many people already own iPhones. The shuffle can be marketed as just a music device, but the iPod touch has to be so much more than just a music player. If Apple does this, I think sales will take off for this device once again.

This would make me so happy.

My first Apple device was an iPod Nano 5th Gen. I loved it and it pulled me into Apple's ecosystem with two iPods, two Macs, an iPhone, and an iPad. I especially love my Nano 5th ben because it retains the click-well (which was an amazing design), is sleek, and it represents Apple back in 2010/2011 back when I enjoyed their software much more (and it seemed much more stable).

I also like having a small device just for music. Though it works, an iPhone isn't an ideal music device because you have to constantly look at the screen. Plus, an iPod Nano is much smaller, lighter, and it won't constantly interrupt my music for a text message or email or random push notification.

I'm actually planning on getting the battery replaced in my iPod Nano (16GB). The only way that I would buy a new Nano is if they (1) lower the price OR (2) give more storage for the current price. Honestly, 16GB soon won't be enough for my rapidly growing library. I can't really justify $150 for a new device that has the same capacity as my current one when Apple will replace the battery for $70. If they can lower the price I'll get it for the lighting connector and 5 hours more of battery life or (preferably) give me a 32GB Nano!

Sorry this was so long, I love my iPods.

EDIT: I wanted to add that the strength of the iPod and the weakness of an iPhone as a music player is the iPods simplicity and single-focus nature. Even the iPhone's music app has gotten out of hand with "For You," "New," "Connect," and "Radio" while it hides my actual music! Call me old fashion (even though I'm just 22) but I like to just see Albums, Artists, Playlists, and Songs. A radio service isn't too much and can be fine, but now they're just pushing a new digital service on you. I just want a simple music player/app. :(

I really hope the price of the ipod touch is reduced significantly since the iPad mini is not much more than where it stands now. If I can pick up an 8GB touch for $99 or 16GB for $129 I would easily jump on this. This would be great to wall mount around the house to control various things in my home rather than buying the more expensive iPad mini.

Because it's a product that introduces many kids to the iOS ecosystem. They become iPhone users when they grow up.

i still keep my ipod touch 4th and never touch it ,,, almost rusted now ,,,, i dont think i going to purchase new ipod with any reason ,

Some parents can afford to buy their kids an iPhone with a calling plan or an iPad, but others would be much more comfortable with buying them an iPod touch. Besides, the iPods are not harming anyone, they shouldn't stop making them.

I know kids are not dumb. They would much rather have an iPhone, but where I live, parents can't afford to buy their children iPhones. I still see kids using iPod touches here because of that.

Here's how I think the iPod line-up should be:

- iPod Sport: Something the size of the iPod Nano 6th-gen or the Apple Watch, with a clip but no watch-faces so it doesn't compete with the Apple Watch. 8GB of storage, bluetooth, Fitness app, and could be paired with iPhone for offline Apple Music.

- iPod Play: iPod Touch re-named, but with a focus on gaming. Make it available in 4" and 6" sizes. 4" for those looking for an all-round device, and the 6" for pure gamers. Gamepad comes right out of the box with these devices.

That's actually a clever line-up. I'm surprised they haven't focused the iPod touch on gaming, considering they mentioned the iPod touch 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations as being the most popular portable gaming devices in their keynotes.

Since the Nano and the Shuffle don't have network connectivity over which they could receive streaming music, they have to be filled from iTunes. And whether iTunes has to download the songs or already has them stored locally doesn't make much of a difference when syncing a Nano or Shuffle. The only thing the Nano and Shuffle thus need are firmware/OS updates that make it possible for them to know whether the owner is currently subscribing to Apple Music (otherwise one could fill a Nano with music from Apple Music and then cancel the subscription and keep listening to the music on the Nano forever.

The whole line of ipods has been in severe decline over the last few years. An upgrade is clearly needed to make it relevant again. However, a color change is not going to cut it. Even a spec bump is not going to turn this around anytime soon. The only thing I can see is to market it as an iphone light. basically without the cell chip, it can still text and even make calls (VoIP) when connected to wifi. For Kids this could be a great alternative. For adults, it could be a little bit more difficult, but think about it. What happens if you the touch is essentially a iphone minus the cell chip. For those that live constantly on a wifi network at home or at work, this could be a way to eliminate paying a telco. The only downside would be no connectivity when in transit - which may be acceptable given the monthly savings.
Some people, famously John Siracusa (of OS X review fame), have done so. But most people wouldn't want to be without a phone while away from home or work, if only for being able to make and receive calls as well as texts. And even John Siracusa now has an iPhone.

For the iPod Touch yes!! The 5th gen is quite outdated now.. iPad 2 internals, so still usable but getting on.

SURELY they'll redesign the interface for the Nano???

Geez, it's about freaking time for the iPod! They were years late updating it last time, and it needed an update by the time they updated it last time, much less in the years since!

Hopefully it'll have at least the iPhone 5c's specs, and it really ought to have GPS too. I wouldn't mind if it lagged behind the iPhone a bit, but FOUR years behind is ludicrous, especially when you can pick up a higher end Windows Phone from Nokia with generally way more capability (and it's a phone) for like less than 1/4 the price.

I'd kind of assumed they'd just abandoned it, and the iPad mini was the new iPod touch.

Glad they're continuing to make SOME non-ios iPods anyway, because iOS has gotten really terrible for podcasts. It was slower to sync, but still excellent through iOS 6, but 7-9 are pretty horrible for podcasts, to the point where I'd say arguably Windows Phone now syncs with iTunes better. Podcasts app *shudder*

Apple's iOS devices have been showing 9:41(2) since the original iPhone 8 years ago.

Hmm, all the devices mentioned in that article were announced and do exist now, so could this be confirmation not only of the planned existence of a next-generation iPod Touch, but also confirm the 7/14 date, since according to others the date shown has always been the 9th of the month? Thoughts on this, anyone?
