Huh, one of the reasons I stay with Apple is because of iMessage lol. I'm really expecting big things from them at WWDC. I love Apple and don't want to change, but the grass sure is looking really green over there...

But aren't most people using whatsapp? Lets say I want to use this, I also have to convince my friends, who have android phones, to download a separate app so they can talk to me? Sounds like a big hassle when everyone I know is using whatsapp.

Your weird most people's friends have iPhones that's why this is important lol

The only reason they will do this is if it benefits them financially, like them earning profits from the rumored money-transfer-via-imessage function. Unfortunately I suspect it will be a wrong move, giving up one of their crown jewels to nickel and dime imessage users will just end in failure.

If you like carrier-controlled updates, bloatware pre-installed, fragmented OS, derivative, non-polished inconsistent UI, and second rate apps released after their iOS counterparts, go ahead and get an Android phone.

iMessage is just the frosting on the cake for me. But I suppose if all you do is text, then any phone will do.

This will be VERY welcome, though honestly whatsapp surpasses iMessage as a messaging application by a considerable margin in my opinion. And I think it will remain ahead in terms of cross platform until iMessage improves its offering.

There's a reason my family and I all have iPhones, yet have a group whatsapp chat as opposed to a group iMessage chat!

No need to be condescending lol. That being said, it isn't the only reason. Obviously I value Apple for the superior support, better app experience and lack of carrier bloat ware (minus Apple's bloat ware haha). That being said, the lack of wireless charging, fast charging, OLED screens, etc is really a drag. I'm expecting some big things from iOS 10 and hopefully the iPhone 7. But a 3rd year of iPhone 6 (6SS?) while other manufacturers are constantly pushing the envelope is somewhat discouraging.

I could see this serving as a Halo effect actually, after a lot of people are exposed to the benefits of iMessage it might convince them the grass really is blue-r on the other side ;)

I hope this isn't true. iMessage is awesome and it should remain a flagship exclusive feature of iOS/OS X.

Why? This decision doesn't even affect you since you're on iOS. What's the downside for you? Do you think if Android users can use iMessage that a) they would and/or b)Apple would lose customers because the decision most people debate most when choosing a phone is how they text?

I don't see this happening. What benefit would there be for Apple if they brought iMessage to Android? Apple Music makes money there. More iMessage users? That'll please shareholders and people who actually want them to focus on innovative things. And as others have mentioned, it'll drive more people away from the iPhone.

Though, it would be nice. It could then easily work on Linux and Windows via Android emulators. Ideally, iMessage could also be baked into a web interface via iCloud.com.

So basically Apple is confirming that iPhone sales will continue to decline.

I wonder if it'll be completely open so that Android users can message other Android users or if Apple will require that one party in the conversation be using iOS or Mac? The latter makes it more of a convenience features for iOS/Mac users to avoid text charges rather than a true push to make iMessage a general platform-agnostic messaging solution.

It's reassuring to see MacDailyNews is still run by that bunch of rabid Apple fanatics.
MacDailyNews Take: Such a move would be welcomed by those of us who have to communicate with those who’ve settled for a lesser, derivative platform and would love to finally be able to do so via Wi-Fi and without having to be subjected to those horrid green bubbles from the Hee Haw demographic.

But it does zero harm. People don't buy iPhones just because of iMessage, and having this enables people to be better acquainted with the apple ecosystem. Steve jobs was against iTunes for windows, but it was necessary for the iPod revolution to occur.

i get all of my sms messages on all of my apple devices. did you enable the services?
You have to enable "Text Message Forwarding" in Messages.
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22363
The point is you shouldn't have to think about anything, it should all just work. I know exactly of these type of annoyances between text forwarding/iMessage. It's annoying to deal with for me and I'm pretty tech savy. 90% of the people I know just don't care/get frustrated.
