iMessage is a great piece of software but I hate using it on my iPhone precisely because most smartphone users in Europe use Android. If true this would be very welcome. It'd be quite popular on Android and it'll allow me to delete all these other ****** chat apps from my iPhone. Some Apple users say it's the only thing keeping them on iPhone but they live on Apple forums so I think they as full of crap. And if you're an Android user who gets used to iMessage you could easily be tempted to switch to an iPhone when your contract renews.

I hope this isn't true. iMessage is awesome and it should remain a flagship exclusive feature of iOS/OS X.
If iMessage is supposed to be the flagship feature Apple has got to work harder.

iMessage is only 20% as useful as it could be, because most of my contacts use Android.
So to make my experience really good, it better span across as many contacts as possible.

If you love exclusive features so much, don't look at services that are supposed to connect you to other people or devices, but rather make actual internal features exclusive.

Whilst you're at it: open up Air Drop. I don't think I've used it more than 5 times with other people than myself.
(and even then... it insists on BT4.0, so my Mac is out.)

This is a classic 'too little, too late' scenario. If apple had done this when they first introduced iMessage, they would've possibly dominated the IM market. Now with WhatsApp and others so widely adopted, it's gonna be impossible to convince people to switch unless Apple can highlight a feature that will set iMessage apart from the crowd. Tough climb.

It will be another separate messaging app for Android users like Viber or Whatsapp I don't think it's gonna be integrated as a default SMS app or could they?

But aren't most people using whatsapp?

And I don't know anyone who uses WhatsApp - which are, not surprisingly, the same people who don't use Facebook.

And the REAL advantage of iMessage over WhatsApp is that both a telephone number and/or an email address can be used to receive and send which lets people who only own iPads or iPod Touchs into the game.

iMessage on Android will give many people the freedom to move to Android. This seems like the worst business decision ever but hey, it benefits me. As crazy as it sounds iMessage was a status symbol. The non iPhone users were discriminated with green message labels, and exposed. I know many people that say things like, I don't even reply to green messages, or that green messages seem so out of place. When I lost my iPhone on a trip and bought a cheap Android till I got back, people replied immediately noticed I switched to an Android and asked if I was ok, lol. As if I went broke or something.

I hate texting people on Android because I don't get responses on all my devices, I don't get read-receipts, or anything. I don't know if Android users would use this, but I'd appreciate it if they did.
I don't get read receipts on iOS devices anyways because everyone has that functioned turned off including me.

Anywho, there is a much better app that does even read receipt and is encrypted as well: whatsapp. This is what the world uses and will probably continue using for global free chats. Many tele companies give free data inside whatsapp for their consumers and I don't think Apple will pay to do that. Apple needed to get in the game of universality years ago and they are way behind IMO to get caught up. It even has a desktop app that works pretty good.

Thank the gods for this!!! Finally. I will make iMessage my default texting app. So tired of the crap Google has been putting out for the last 3 years. Their messaging and video services have been complete garbage.

Why would an Android user be tempted to switch to an iPhone if they can use imessage on android? What is there to persuade them?

I guess they figured it wasn't enough to screw up texting on the iPhone. Now Apple wants to screw up texting on every mobile phone in existence.

If you are happy with iMessage, then I am happy for you. But for me, iMessage has caused me an untold amount of grieve. I continuously received text messages to my iPad, but not iPhone. I finally had enough and just turned it off.

iMessage and Siri = Do Not Want

iOS and android is convoluting over time. As each of their flagship apps can be used on competitive platform, people will be more than happy to chat with others easier.

Only come true if iMessage starts becoming available on android.

Yes they would be crazy to give iMessage away to a competing platform. If Android users want iMessage, they need to come join with us as iPhone and iPad owners.

Thats just stupid. What if some of us want to leave the iPhone because we're getting sick of things, but would like to continue using iMessage?

What if iPhone users want to be able to message as many people as possible using iMessage, and given the majority of smartphones are Androids, not being able to message people is annoying. There are plenty of very valid reasons people don't buy iPhones.

If true, then it's about time. They need to do the same with FaceTime. Also fix iTunes and port that also.

But it does zero harm. People don't buy iPhones just because of iMessage, and having this enables people to be better acquainted with the apple ecosystem. Steve jobs was against iTunes for windows, but it was necessary for the iPod revolution to occur.
Your wrong I came back to iPhone from edge 100%bevause of iMessage . I would need a extra 20 dollar plan if not plus I love I message

This is a pretty big deal to me although I think it benefits those of us who use iMessage more then anything. I'm plenty content with my iPhone but there are times where android has looked tempting. If I were to ever switch and this becomes a reality there's nothing else sans certain apps that I would have to leave behind. Then again my experiences on android so far have not been very positive.
