Your weird most people's friends have iPhones that's why this is important lol
Considering that Worldwide the Marketshare of Android is (depending on source and mathod) between 50% and 70% (and even in the US apple only keeps below 40%) this seems to be a VERY odd statement about other people's friends...

It's true!

And at the end of the day android users are better of trusting Apple with their private conversations than what's app/ Facebook.
[doublepost=1465537917][/doublepost]

Judging by past Apple behaviour, this wild be very true. However they have on occasion provided some freebies. Apple do like to solve "problems" in computing. At the moment most iPhone uses have what's app to get iMessage features with android users. It's annoying to have too many apps doing the same thing and there is a rise in Facebook skeptism, Facebook even said now that what's app is free they will monitise through advertisements based on your conversation.

WhatsApp is secure.

And I like a Telegram even more. There will always be people who will sacrifice some privacy for convenience. In this case, I'd rather push people to Telegram than iMessage. It is truly cross platform, including desktop application for OS X and Windows, as well as all the Mobile OS.

I think it's great if this happens, competition is good and all that, but Apple has a lot of catching up to do. And for those of us with family overseas say in India or China, it's going to be really difficult to move them from WhatsApp, Telegram or WeChat.

Yes it is touted very often as a reason someone will stick to iOS. So with it open to Android users it would be a positive step. Likewise for multiplatform owners it's a great step as it now means I can have my messaging synced across all my multi OS devices rather than just my Mac & iOS ones.

It's a positive thing. No one is forcing anyone to use it. It won't come pre-installed on your android device, so why would such a move cause so much vitriol ? Goodness forum people are finicky creatures at times.

I think there may be a lot of concern from loyalists \ stock holders that this would be a reason for apple users to dump iPhone for Android. I honestly don't see that happening. iMessage is one of the things I love on iOS, but its not the only thing. I have tried Android phones (have an S7 sitting in front of me), and its not just messaging I don't like on it. Then there are people like my wife who will not change because she doesn't want to learn a new system just to make a phone call or text her sister. So all this worry about exclusivity is crap. Apple's biggest barrier to growth is due to the closed off nature of their business. It's the only reason why Apple has the best device on the planet, yet Google has steamrolled them. They need to license iOS and OSx to manufacturers while still making there own stuff. They will not lose a penny in sales to OEM's.

FINALLY!! GOODBYE WHATSAPP!!
Seriously, WhatsApp is good but their updates are so slow so slow, as if they have just one programmer from high school working part time, with not internet connection.
Audio call took them so long.
Not expecting video call anytime in this decade.
Its taking them forever to release an option to auto delete old messages and collected garbage of medias. That too, delete them one by one. My brother's 16gb iPhone was filled 5gb of whatsapp media.

Sadly I'm old enough to remember when they did that the first time round and it nearly ended apple completely. It was not good. Apples strength is in its control of hardware and software, diluting it to third party OEM's would hurt their business, history has proven that.

If Apple messages can also be the default SMS app on Android and send SMS alongside iMessages to other users like it does on iOS it could be the answer to universal messaging that WhatsApp and its ilk are still missing that piece of the jigsaw.

It could be the messaging app to unify IOS and Android alongside universal SMS. As well as the tricks it's capable of doing such as forwarding and answering SMS from other devices (tablets & computers).

There is great potential in it and it could viably replace a number of the messaging apps I have - bridging them.

It used to be good for me, I might dare say the gold standard of mobile cross-platform messaging back in the day when it was competing against BBM and when BlackBerry was relevant. Ah, good ol'days... But hell yes updates are slow! There's not even Apple Watch support, photos are sent compressed and without any information and I really don't use any Facebook or Google-owned products except for WhatsApp. iMessage for Android is awesome for me and my friends in hell.

I haven't owned an iphone or probably posted on this board in over 5 years. I long ago vowed i'd never give another dime to Apple. not here to discuss or debate that point.

I am here to say i'd be an imessage on android user from day one. Why? 90% of my friends and family use iphones. The majority of them are tech illiterate and they will never willingly learn how to use a new phone ecosystem or messenger. Years of beating my head against the wall has proven this too me. So if i'm ever to be on a mature, usable messaging platform with my friends and family it will have to be imessage. It hurts to say it.

The truth is if imessage is released on android apple will own messaging in the U.S.. Facebook, google, et al. can take their toys home.

I will never buy another iphone, but a free messaging download on my android would be the perfect compromise to properly communicate with my friends and family.

Nice. I hope while they're tinkering with iMessages they implement actual cloud syncing between devices. What I mean is syncing message thread histories and deletions, something iMessage still doesn't do.

Yes they would be crazy to give iMessage away to a competing platform. If Android users want iMessage, they need to come join with us as iPhone and iPad owners.

With declining phone sales and stagnant tablet sales it makes sense to use iMessage as a way to encourage people to buy Apple hardware. At some point Apple needs to address their lackluster services.

Bizarre move, one of the reasons people stick with iOS ! It was the only thing I missed moving to Android

Uhhhhh... if they do that, then there's no reason to use iPhone at all. I know quite a few people who use iPhones primarily for iMessage. Apple will loose a lot of iPhone sales if this happens (wait, they're already loosing sales!) iMessage is one of the only exclusively Apple things that only Apple users get. If they do this then why not iOS for android?

iMessage on android = lack of apple ecosystem

You know, RIM had that same attitude.

I kinda feel the same. Honestly iMessage is just about the only think keeping me from switching. Perhaps FaceTime and applepay, but there are other options for those. So Apple would probably lose me as an iPhone user in favor of an s7 or similar. (At least for one upgrade cycle anyways!)

Hmm, I know 3 or 4 people who know what that is. The rest are iPhone users. I have a few friends with androids and it's completely annoying texting them. iMessage is the only reason I haven't switched yet.

Hmm okay, well I guess it's different in the States (I'm guessing you guys are from there), than in Europe. Everyone is here using WhatsApp and I've never seen anyone use Apple's iMessage.

This is something that I have wanted for a while now. As someone whom has an iPhone 6S+ and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, I have been looking forward to the day Apple opens the doors to their messaging app and creates a unified multi-platform application. I often use iMessage on my Macbook Pro and iPhone 6S+, but am stuck using Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat, or Telegram for messaging on my Android. Simple SMS does not do justification when it comes to messaging.

iMessage on my Android device would allow unification of mobile messages for my needs, and I would greatly appreciate that. It won't make me leave the Apple ecosystem; simply just make things easier for my personal needs.
