I disagree. In fact , in 2007 a 3.5" screen was considered HUGE for a mobile phone. Maybe they couldn't have done it larger because of Battery life issues.

...and certainly also for marketing issues. There were already bigger screens on the market then - but on on phones, remember iPaq and similar HP or Palm devises. Apples concept was (I guess) to have a product that was less PDA and more phone.

Ridiculous!

This is such a rubbish rumour, I'm disappointed this site even ran it. iPhone Math ummmmm yeah that is total crap that Apple would name a product to make no sense like Samsung would. This should be April fools. The 4.8 - 5" screen size may be good for Samsung, but what kind of user experience does it deliver - crap. Apple doesn't follow its competition, they do what's good for them to make the best possible products, not chase market share like everyone else. If this happened, I would join the circus and marry a midget :)

So the same people that knock Apple for not innovating are the ones saying Apple needs to follow the herd and make a larger phone because that's what everyone else is doing.

The reason it's considered "following the herd" is because the iPhone had the same size screen for 5 years.

Everyone else was offering phones with different screen sizes.

Apple could have too... but they didn't. So now they are catching up to market trends.

For instance... the Galaxy S was 4" and the Galaxy SII was 4.3"

If that size increase was truly a mistake... Samsung would have gone back to 4"

Obviously it wasn't a mistake.

I know, I know... the iPhone is the best-selling single phone model in the world.

But every other company is confident enough to launch their flagship phones well above 4"

i like it how i can use my iphone with only one hand, unlike people who own samsung S3... operating that thing is the same as watching a movie on a 50" plasma screen 1meter away from it.

If this thread proves anything it's that a lot of users here enjoy one handed activities...

Would assume iOS 7 will be improved for a bigger phone screen then, too small for the iPad like layout?

Terrible and good news

I think that an iphone with 4.8 monitor overrides the golden rule of one finger - hand use and this is not an iPhone and its bad news...
Also because this is only rumors i think that "math" in combination of the rumors of the cheap iphone and the official rejection with the patent for gui extensions... i believe that is some kind of feature remote control for the upcoming tv set and also some test for a possible 3g ipod with facetime support or facebook calls but not mobile call...

No, just no. No no no no no, NO. Buy an android device, please. Stop making it sound like bigger screens are a necessity. THEY are not. this is simply a matter of taste. If you want a bigger screen, buy a phone with a bigger screen. This does not mean apple has to do the same, and I hope to god they don't.

I'm sorry that he wants something that you don't.

What else do you not like so I know not to buy it.

Do you hate The Big Bang Theory? I'll call and get it cancelled immediately!

Don't like the new iMac design? Tim Cook told me personally he's just waiting for the opinion of a single MR forum user and he'll cancel it right now. Want me to put in the call? He told me that Apple can only make things that you personally like.

Size matters. Samsung sells because they are not afraid to go big
Bigger is better for a phone.
Smaller is better for a tablet.
The iPad mini is outselling the big iPad.
Size is important. You can still hold a 4.8" iPhone with one hand.
They will sell 5 million the first day.
I can't wait!

The iPad mini outsells the regular iPad because of one reason - price. Granted, there are people who would prefer the smaller size irrespective of price but they are far outnumbered by those who just want a piece of the iPad magic at the lowest price.

breaking the trend

People thought there was not going to be a smaller iPad but Apple made the iPad mini. It wouldn't surprise me if they decide to make a bigger iPhone.

And whats with all the hate about bigger phones? If you don't like it, don't buy it. You don't have to own every single Apple product you know.

Is this what "ANALYSTS" and "fans" want apple to make?

I think I'm gonna wait until a proper 50" phone comes out.

There's a lot of talk about other company's 'flagship' phones being >4", with various conclusions being drawn. But what proportion of sales is due the the screen size alone - I'm guessing many folk will always what the latest and greatest models irrespective of screen size.

Correct me if I'm wrong but none of these flagship phones come with the choice of a smaller screen size do they? I they did then we could draw more meaningfull conclusions.

I'm guessing that if given the choice between different screen sizes but otherwise identical specs the consumer would choose the smaller because they get to have the latest and greatest at a lower price.

Likewise, if Apple simply upped all future iphone models to >4" then they would sell like hot cakes because the consumer has no other choice. I wouldn't be so sure that would be the case if Apple retains a smaller option.

Maths not Math.

It's short for Mathematics not Mathematic.

Indeed, that's a pet hate of mine too.

We're kind of losing the concept of phone now.[...] Why do we need actual cell service? The only reason is to sell multiple products, but I think eventually it's going to go away.
I generally agree that the distinction between cell and data will eventually fade away, but i expect this to take some more years for various reasons.

Why be linked to a phone number that changes if you change services?
Normally you can take your number with you when changing your provider. Services for a lifetime number are available for quite some years now, though not that many people are interested in that, at least over here.

I hope it's not called "Math" in Australia or Europe.

We say "Maths" here.

"Math" as an abbreviation of "Mathematics" is an Americanism, and a grating one at that, inexplicably reducing a plural form to a singular one.
Actually we (non-English western european country) use the singular form for Mathematic(s) in our language. I think it's not as black and white as you sketch it...

As both a developer and user, I would prefer Apple standardize on only 2 phone screens:

1136x640, 3.75", 16:9, 348 dpi
1440x810, 4.75", 16:9, 348 dpi
Apple may as well choose to go for an already introduced resolution like the original iPad's 1024x768, only in a smaller package.

One Retina iPad 9.7" display would then allow for four iPhone "Math" displays, so they wouldn't even have to change the production lines as much as with introducing a completely new resolution.

Is this what "ANALYSTS" and "fans" want apple to make?
You do know that there's something called Bluetooth headset?!

Smartphones are almost oldschool. The first company who realizes this and builds something new which is not bigger displays etc. will become the new Apple. i doubt that Google Glass will be the new big thing so I am curious if Apple ore another company can counter that in a more user friendly and more stylish way. I think it looks strange and unnatural when everybody on the street is typing and touching on a small touchscreen and it is already becomaing a thing from the past.

Some hands are big

it was never about holding the iPhone with one had, it was using it with one hand which will be impossible with this.

This phone will be a flop. Sure people will buy it but the 4" size will still be their best seller.

Can you really be this unaware that human sapiens come in different sizes and not everyone has the same sized hands?

I feel like a fool having to explain to you that a bigger phone will be preferable for a person with big hands, and guess what... a little phone will be preferable for a person with little hands !!

So it's really nothing to do with Apple losing design vision is it?

What a load of nonsense. You can buy and colour you want so long as its black!!
I personally don't want a bigger screen, but there is a huge market for a bigger screen and apple needs to cater for it. Saying we don't make it so buy another make is very short sighted indeed.

I agree the OS is going to have to be retooled as well. I doubt people would be too excited about the ability to display 7x6 icons. :p

I really, really really really hope apple, doesn't catter to this supposed "demand" for a larger screen. It's completely blown out of proportion by now.

i think people buy large android phones because it's the only option. if you want an android phone the size of an iPhone, you'd have to make compromises on performance and battery life.

the reason flagship android phones are so big is because they can't figure out how to make them smaller.

My reason was the screen is way too small. When iPhone 5 came out, i still found it way to small, I am 26 years old, there is nothing wrong with bigger, i have great eyes, and would like to keep it that way.

I think apple will sell in the 100's of millions no doubt.

This is the first good rumour i have heard yet, everyone i know will buy the bigger screen.

Good year.

Peace

Your age and your reasoning just dont match. Apple is currently selling at most 50 mil iphones in their best quarter. Where are you getting that number from? The 5 mil people who bought the note2?

If I'm reading this rumor "correctly", Apple will be manufacturing three iPhone models.

1. The iPhone that will be "cheap".

2. The current iPhone 5 4" display.

3. The rumored iPhone 6 4.8" display.

I personally would like to see the larger display but with no bezel so it would be slightly larger than the current iPhone 5 with folded glass sides. But the innovation has to come mostly from shoving more features to iOS because android is catching up very fast.

One simple feature that I like about android that is lacking on iOS is live wallpaper. It makes it look simply way more elegant and advanced. I could go on but I'm going to get rid of my iPhone and just use an iPad Mini whenever the Retina version is released.
