If I'm reading this rumor "correctly", Apple will be manufacturing three iPhone models.

1. The iPhone that will be "cheap".

2. The current iPhone 5 4" display.

3. The rumored iPhone 6 4.8" display.

I personally would like to see the larger display but with no bezel so it would be slightly larger than the current iPhone 5 with folded glass sides. But the innovation has to come mostly from shoving more features to iOS because android is catching up very fast.

One simple feature that I like about android that is lacking on iOS is live wallpaper. It makes it look simply way more elegant and advanced. I could go on but I'm going to get rid of my iPhone and just use an iPad Mini whenever the Retina version is released.

LIve wallpapers are probably the most useless features of ANdroid. Waste of power for no purposes.

It's highly unlikely that Apple would fragment their product line-up with yet another phone size and screen aspect ratio. A more realistic approach would be that their 'main' flagship phone will retain a 4-inch screen, but the supposed cheaper, smaller product will be more akin to a 3GS than anything. This way, little preparation is required (especially with regard to Apps)

In truth, they probably learnt a lot from selling the 3GS so cheap once the 4S was available. There's no reason why they can't sell an updated 3GS-like product and re-brand it with something more befitting their paradigm, like iPhone Mini. Afterall, they have an iPad and iPad Mini, so this would make perfect sense.

Also, focusing on the idea of an even larger iPhone 6, I doubt this would happen. Apple likes to reason all their product features and tout them with clever thinking; they did this with the new 4-inch screen by suggesting it "makes more sense" to have a longer screen as it's easier to control with one hand. If they were truly going to make an even larger phone, they'd have trouble justifying so.

No, just no. No no no no no, NO. Buy an android device, please. Stop making it sound like bigger screens are a necessity. THEY are not. this is simply a matter of taste. If you want a bigger screen, buy a phone with a bigger screen. This does not mean apple has to do the same, and I hope to god they don't.

the screen size is 1 of the things that prevented me from buying iphone5. the screen is just too small. there should be 2 sizes. nothing wrong with that.

i think people buy large android phones because it's the only option. if you want an android phone the size of an iPhone, you'd have to make compromises on performance and battery life.

the reason flagship android phones are so big is because they can't figure out how to make them smaller.

How many Android or Windows flagship phones have a smaller screen? Can we really say these buyers would be buying an iPhone if it had a larger screen? Maybe a small percentage would but my guess is preferring Android over iOS has more to do with it than screen size. Or like here in the US, Verizon and AT&T pushing Android phones over the iPhone. There's plenty of stories about people going to AT&T or Verizon looking for an iPhone but sales associates trying to talk them into something else. And then lets not forget the $12B Samsung spent last year on marketing/advertising, which its pretty obvious a large chunk of that was spent on the Galaxy product line.

I'm still looking for hard evidence that Apple is losing sales or not gaining as much as they could be because the screen size of their phone is too small, or because they haven't jumped on the phablet bandwagon. I guess we'll find out later this week if that's true or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong but none of these flagship phones come with the choice of a smaller screen size do they?

Er..

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8190_galaxy_s_iii_mini-5033.php (4")
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9305_galaxy_s_iii-5001.php (4.8")
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_ii_n7100-4854.php (5.5")

...and that's taking you literally and just looking at Samsung's flagship "Galaxy" line rather than looking at the full range of screen sizes available for the Android platform.

Thing is, Apple offers a choice of multiple sizes in its Desktop, Laptop, Tablet and iPod ranges, so why should the iPhone be 'one size fits all'?

...

they probobly are beginning to understand that what began as a phone with built in internet is now an internet device that works as a phone. When it was a phone with built in internet small made sense, now that it is internet with a built in phone big screens are just fundamentally better (also they need to revamp safaris UI to not take up so much screen space

I actually think the rumor of a smaller iphone holds more truth only because I can see Ive saying "we took what we learned from the ipad mini and transformed it into the best phone we have ever produced"

Size matters. Samsung sells because they are not afraid to go big
Bigger is better for a phone.
Smaller is better for a tablet.
The iPad mini is outselling the big iPad.
Size is important. You can still hold a 4.8" iPhone with one hand.
They will sell 5 million the first day.
I can't wait!

Samsung sells a lot of phones mainly because the retailers make a lot more on them, go into any phone shop and they will first try and push an android device on you, only when you ask for iPhone specifically do you get to see an iPhone. Also Samsung spend a lot more money on advertising and product placement, but I think its point of sale that has the biggest effect. There is also the fact that Samsung make ranges of cheaper phones that are more attractive to people who could care less about brand, build quality and hype but Apple have traditionally never catered for this market.

Come on Apple. Give me an iPhone with a 3.5" version of the iPhone 5 screen with better touch screen, the same A6 SOC, cap the memory at 32gb, all the rest of the specs the same - camera, wifi etc. Keep the same cellular radios.
And then give me a design like the 5 where I can undo a couple of screws to change the battery or home button or screen with ease and the right tools, make the case out of plastic if you want but it has to be the same thickness as the iPhone 5.

Then charge a bit less for it.

Nah that'll never happen, a 3.5 and 4 and 4.8 iPhone at the same time? Whilst we can all dream, I'm not so sure about these rumours...

I have to laugh at all the people on here proclaiming Apple is loosing iPhone sales purely because they don't make a bigger sized device! No, it will be because iOS is stale and boring if anything and Android is now more then capable of matching it.

Apple is falling apart in public... hope they are having fun saving money on parts at the expense of innovating. How about raise the bar, double the ram, double the megapixel, give screen size options, etc. Find a real better battery. If they want to become a phone company, then they need to offer people lots of options. And for those of us living out of the USA, iPhones are 700 to 1000$. Less expensive versions are a must.

Whilst I do think very large screen phones are vulgar, and personally, my thumb just aint long enough for the large Samsungs, I do see good potential in offering a range, in the same way Apple offer a range of Notebook (and now iPad) sizes.

Maybe 3.5 inch, 8/16 gig, A5 driven mini for those on a tight budget

4 inch 16/32/64 A6 or A6X driven for mid market.

4.5 / 4.8 inch 32/64/128 A6X or A7 driven for the high end market.

Anything above 4.8 inch, would in my mind be excessive. Don't get me started on the 27 inch tablet discussion!!

Ha... we made the phone 4 inches because its best for your hand...

Ya. No one bought that BS when you said it.

I don't understand all the whining, if you don't want a 4.8" phone then don't buy one, no body forces you to... I'm glad that Apple is finally diversifying their phone line. And please stop the trolling about the name, there are far worse mobile phone names out there, and it's not even sure that it will be named iPhone Math.

Omg

I am stationed in Korea and I have seen the new iphone 5's floating around like prepaids are back in the states. They are so small that they fell like a step backwards for smart phones. Increasing the size does make sense and they should have never made it smaller in the first place!

Yep selling dozens of millions of iphones a quarter. Im sure that qualifies for "falling apart". Just because these so called tech journalists like to play "analysts" and want to bring down Apple doesn't mean they're right. Let's wait till the 23rd I'd like to laugh to their faces.

And just so you know the reason why Samsung is selling a lot is not because of their gimmicky software features, but because they spent a **** load of money on advertising and carriers around the world are so eager to push Samsung phones to leverage against Apple. W/out those factors Samsung can't even compete w Nokia or HTC or Sony.

looks like a desperate move

See, what these analysts don't realize is that the screen on the iPhone is the largest screen possible for one handed use. Apple cares so much about its customers that it will not allow them to use a phone that requires two hands on occasion.

Thus, the rumor is not true. If it were true, then it would mean that 'Apple says one thing and does another, which is not possible.

The reason why Android phones are so large to begin w was NOT because they were more innovative. they just needed a bigger body to be as good (failed) as iphone. I challenge you to find an Android phone as small as the iphone 4s and as powerful.

Apple needs to evaluate its competitors and the reason for their successes or failures. If there is a significant market for larger smartphones it would be pretty stupid for Apple to ignore it and gift these consumers to its competitors without even a fight.

Imagine Apple using the approach you suggest with the iPad: "Want a smaller, cheaper tablet? Buy a Kindle Fire, please.". It turns out it was a pretty good idea to provide a different product instead.

Last time I checked, 3 models does not equal dozens of models. All Apple needs to do is keep a cheap 3.5 in option with previous gen hardware, a midrange 4 in (which I think is just completely stupid personally but thats for another time and thread), and a high end large screen phone. The only difference between the 4 in and larger phone would be a needed graphics bump and screen size. Apple already successfully ruined their "one screen resolution and size" thing so they should offer a larger sized phone, which would appeal to more people than you think.

This optimizes options for the consumer and keeps the supply chain lean and organized.

Why exactly should the 4" phone be "lesser" than the 5" one? Big =/= high end. If they insist on producing a large phone it shouldn't come at the expense of the regular iPhone.
