There was a time Apple innovated......

Now it's turned into Samsung and every other electronic company and just turning out a myriad of devices without any real innovation.

Disagree with Steve's philosophy, but he always made steadfast decisions and ones that he could market with his own conviction. Now at Apple it appears to be a free for all 'thinking wise', and that may not be a good choice.

"Think differently" they once declared with genuine conviction - now its "we think the same because our stock price tells us too" !

I'm starting to have De Ja Vu of when Steve first left Apple and the hideous mess it found itself when it went appealing to the masses without any real 'focus' on what made Apple Macintosh, Apple Macintosh.

This is the perfect scenario to me. Apple going with a larger screen iPhone doesn't mean they have to sacrifice the classic 3.5" screen. They could easily offer it, a slightly wider 4" model, and a 4.8" model for people who want a much larger phone.

You can't just do a "slightly wider 4" model", all apps would need to be redone, for what? .2 of an inch? The 4" is already stretching (or probably exceeding) one handed usability for the most people. What you propose wont happen. It will be the same 4" and probably a 4.8".

I really, really really really hope apple, doesn't catter to this supposed "demand" for a larger screen. It's completely blown out of proportion by now.

When my contract runs out this fall, and there's not a bigger iPhone available, I'm going from my 4S to the Galaxy S3 or S4.

Sorry, but the 3.5 inch display is annoyingly small for half the things I do on it.

...

how large could the screen be with a reasonable sized bezel instead of the super huge current bezel?

Would be nice if they ditched the 4" screen all together and went back to the 3.5" and then also had a 4.8", a nice simple two model line up.

See, what these analysts don't realize is that the screen on the iPhone is the largest screen possible for one handed use. Apple cares so much about its customers that it will not allow them to use a phone that requires two hands on occasion.

This is such drivel. People have different sized hands.

I can very comfortably use a 4.8 inch screen with one hand.

What exactly is wrong with options?

The iPad mini outsells the regular iPad because of one reason - price. Granted, there are people who would prefer the smaller size irrespective of price but they are far outnumbered by those who just want a piece of the iPad magic at the lowest price.

iPad mini may outsell regular iPads _right now_ because anyone who wanted one can only buy them now, while anyone who wanted a regular iPad had years of time to buy one.

It should be called 'iPhone Pro' as some of Apple customers are more "special" than others ;)

I would take the iPhone 4 technology, blow it up to five inch, and sell it as "iPhone Max" really cheap. Put into consumer minds that 5" = cheap garbage, 4" = quality product.

I don't have a problem with Apple going 4.8 in.

I can hold a S III just fine with one hand...I don't see why you all can't.

I really hope this is not real. Apple needs to forget about what Android/Google/samsung are doing and start focusing on creativity and innovation as it was when Steve was alive.

Why I feel Apple is losing the game and is just doing what others are doing?

Er..

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8190_galaxy_s_iii_mini-5033.php (4")
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9305_galaxy_s_iii-5001.php (4.8")
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_ii_n7100-4854.php (5.5")

...and that's taking you literally and just looking at Samsung's flagship "Galaxy" line rather than looking at the full range of screen sizes available for the Android platform.

Thing is, Apple offers a choice of multiple sizes in its Desktop, Laptop, Tablet and iPod ranges, so why should the iPhone be 'one size fits all'?

Thanks for the info but it kind of makes the point I was trying to get across - these aren't the same phone with different screen sizes.

Take the SIII Mini compared the the SIII, the specs are watered down in the former (eg. 1GHz dual core vs 1.4 GHz quad core CPU). Those who want the best performance/features have to go for the bigger screen because there is no other choice.

To make the correlation between only screen size and high demand/sales is flawed. I have nothing against Apple releasing a larger screen, I just hope the maintain the current size without compromising the performance/specs.

Obviously because it's cheaper, not necessarily because it's a better experience, and what the people want.

It depends on what you want to do. If I wanted to type up a document in Pages or make something in Keynote, the Mini is way too small. But if you want a device just for reading books, playing around on the internet, reading emails, playing games, or watching movies while you're running around, the Mini is a much better choice. It's smaller size and lighter weight makes it a much better portable entertainment device.

This is one of the things I argued about before the Mini showed up. I knew tons of people who liked the iPad, but thought it was too heavy for what they wanted to use it for. Now you look around on these very boards, and you see people saying they'd never take the 10" iPad because...yup...it's too heavy compared to the relatively sleeker, lighter Mini.

People aren't choosing it just because it's cheaper. For some, it does offer a better experience.

Yeah, you have a point. Though with that in mind, with the 4" having the same width as the old iPhone, there wouldn't be a need for a 3.5" whatsoever. It'd just be a choice between the current 4", and a larger 4.8".

Though what aspect ratio would the 4.8" have? Would it be like the old iPhone, or the iPad? If it's like the old iPhone, then the 4" we've got now would be the odd man out.

You see, while tablets and "smart phones" (it really depends how you define it) did exist before the iPhone/iPad in some form ... Apple came along with the right screen size/quality, the right software and UI, multitouch, etc. and voila. We now spend much of our daily "computing" time on a phone.

Yes, I was only replying to the OP who said Apple invented the smartphone (or PDA) which is not entirely true. Apple merely found the right combination of software/hardware to make it succeed, or perhaps it was the right time for such a device.

But then again, Palm OS was very good too - but Palm let it falter with lack of updates ...

Right, what's the big deal? Even if the rumor is true, it says Apple would be updating the 4" iPhone as well, so people who want power in a small package won't be "left behind" so to speak.

As for apps, as has been shown with the iPhone 4, iPad, then iPad 3rd, then iPhone 5, when Apple says "dance", developers "dance". If all current product lines continue, eventually there would still only be 2 or 4 screens to develop for depending on the app (for some apps simply having the same aspect ratio would be good enough eg games, others might need to alter the screen elements to take better advantage of the greater space).

They just changed screen size, and now another iPhone? with a larger screen.

I really don't want the fragmentation in apps to expand even more. I hate having these black bars on my iPhone as is. Adding another resolution would only further this hell of indifferent iPhone apps. Let's just stick to these 2 resolutions please.

I think it all really depends on how Apple does it. If they stick with a 4" and 4.8" screen or go S/M/L by still keeping a 3.5" screen.

There is one real easy way they could do all this and thats go with a @4x image size. To me this seems like the most logical. If they do @4x and double the screen res. of 640x960 you get 1080x1920. So 1080p on a 4.8" screen.

Doing that keeps things very simple for developers.

Not sure where have you been living in the past 4 months but the iphone is 4 inch big now. And the next s4 is already rumored to have a 5 inch display. Good luck putting it in your pocket.

Oh ANd on behalf of Apple: good bye and good riddance.

lol @ all the people freaking out that it's actually going to be called the "iPhone Math".

and then what? Keep increasing screen size to match up w the ANdroid camp? All the new Android phones will have a 5 inch screen this year. Do you want Apple to have an XL in their portfolio as well?

Size matters. Samsung sells because they are not afraid to go big
Bigger is better for a phone.
Smaller is better for a tablet.
The iPad mini is outselling the big iPad.
Size is important. You can still hold a 4.8" iPhone with one hand.
They will sell 5 million the first day.
I can't wait!

Honestly whats wrong with this planet? Bigger is better for a phone but smaller is better for a tablet?

No, just no. No no no no no, NO. Buy an android device, please. Stop making it sound like bigger screens are a necessity. THEY are not. this is simply a matter of taste. If you want a bigger screen, buy a phone with a bigger screen. This does not mean apple has to do the same, and I hope to god they don't.

Lol. You don't suppose Apple would want those folks buying the larger screen phone from them do you? How about this, if you want a phone with a smaller screen, then buy a phone with a smaller screen. It's simply a matter of taste after all. I have a feeling if apple had introduced the larger phones first, that would happen to be your taste now anyways.

Do we even know if this is true ? Apple doesn't announce anything until Wednesday, does anyone even have a source showing the iPad Mini outsells the regular iPad ?

Or are people just making stuff up, hoping to be right.
