They do enter the suspended state after a certain period of time, but from what I've heard, apps can wake themselves up while in the background and execute code. The GPS tracking app, for example, is not only checking the location but dropping a pin in its database at my location, thus executing app-specific code. There is also the VoIP category (like Skype), which appears to run in the background, according to those documents.

The way I thought it worked was that all apps freeze the moment you push them to the background to save on battery life. If it doesn't need to run, it just doesn't run. Period. Though there is an API that allows certain things to continue working in the background. Like VoIP, GPS tracking, network syncing, ect. ect. Pretty much what both our links say. Though anything that doesn't call upon this API just sits there in ram exactly how you left it until called to the forefront again.

Really, I think we're saying about the same thing in a slightly different way. :p

I am an Alpha Male and I want the best, even if it's just a 1% difference. Motorla phones make the iPhone look like a sissy bitch toy.

That's like people who spend tons of bucks on glacier water, even though it tastes almost exactly like what you'd get out of the tap.

It's all posturing. A real "alpha male" would use what they like, and not give a good goddamn one way or the other.

My friend recently bought a Samsung 4.3" phone, rejecting the 5" device as absurd, uncharacteristic of a phone. I wonder why Apple would bend to competition with such a stupid idea? Perhaps the rumor points to a possible 5" micro iPad with the A5 inerts for 3rd world countries?

I really think that from a business standpoint, the larger iPhone makes sense.
It already has been established that there is a market for phones of that size (4.8+).

Correct - You don't compete in a market by doing nothing!
To make the pie sweeter for Apple -
No need to develop a screen size from scratch.
The others did all the work. AOLED Even.

Would this larger iPhone cannibalize sales from its smaller siblings, or the iPad mini?

If anything more sales got on board for the optional size.
There's still a huge older now - Baby Boomer market that prefer larger.
They also have the Funds available / to Give.

I think that, for a type of customer, a larger iPhone would obviate the iPad mini,
but not the iPad (or an iPad maxi (13"))
This type of customer values screen size over (relative) portability.

Good point with the iPad mini - although I doubt any slack in sales with the newer upgrade - Retina.
The iPad maxi's portability seems to be mostly within the home - coffee shop.

I doubt the Student population use the iPad in any class setting.

However, Apple has been moving towards a Sith-like rule of 2 for a while:
iPhone4/4s, iPhone5 - etc.
- to have a bigger phone means killing the 4s or the 5.

I suspect one of them will be - avoidance of conflict - with the 4 series as history.

One thing or more will likely never change - the new devices will show up
with down graded processor & camera vs the competition.
Saving it to upcoming future device upgrades - Rule of doctrine.

Just as we have seen in recent postings already - this tidbit of news has swayed others already to stay on board.
Myself included.

The China code for MATH could likely be something like the 'Mighty Apple iToucH'.

It's a matter of taste yes. But why should your taste over rule mine? I want a phone with a bigger screen but I want it with iOS. So what larger phone would you suggest I buy?

I completely agree w/ MuddyPaws1,

I want the same.. Bigger screen w/ IOS.. not skinny 4 inch ones.. monstrous one. Why not? Make multiple size or bust apple.(at least from me)

Has It Come To This Already?

This is one rumor I hope is false. Making minor size/shape tweaks to a product line is not "innovation" by any stretch.

If Apple is in a "quiet stretch" relative to innovation then why not do with 10.9 what they did with 10.6. Advertise 10.9 as being "under the hood" changes ONLY to make everything faster and more efficient, and to concentrate on bug fixes. No more social media crap...just good SW engineering.

At least then Apple could dust off the line "it just works"...again.

And for that matter...do the same for iOS.

I see something in these rumours.

Apple has always used the older model iPhones as the 'cheaper' options when a major upgrade comes out. Isn't that a bit cheap on their part?

Surely they could design two NEW phones - cheaper and premium?

I never thought I would see the day that Apple iPhone users would turn into a civil war over bigger displays.

I have been a long time iPhone loyalist but even 4 years ago when I bought the 3G model, I thought the phone screen was too small back then.

The bigger display you get, The more you can really enjoy everything the iPhone has to offer.

For those complaining about one handed use. Apple should not brag about this.

More car accidents and deaths are because of this one handed feature that Apple loves to talk about in their cell phones.

Anyhow, I have been wanting iPhones to have a bigger display since forever. But you guys here really surprise me by arguing about everything under the sun about how bad the bigger display is.

It's insanity. This is a much needed move by Apple. Get with the times or go back to your 2002 1 inch cell phone displays.

I really, really really really hope apple, doesn't catter to this supposed "demand" for a larger screen. It's completely blown out of proportion by now.

I don't understand this comment. What's wrong with giving people who want a larger screen the option to buy one? It's not like the 'regular' iPhone is going anywhere.

I know plenty of people who have opted for a Samsung Galaxy phone as the iPhone screen is too small for their needs. So the market for larger screens is there. The Galaxy SII & SIII massive sales prove the point.

I think the name is a translation error. "Math" could be "Myth" as in, highly doubtful. OR, "Math" is "Meth" as in, we're all smoking it if we believe this. :D

Very well said. I could not agree more.

I have the resources to use any phone I want. I choose iPhone 5 because I'm an Apple loyalist of 20 years, many PowerBooks and MacBook Pro's later, I remain loyal.

But my smartphone loyalty is waning.

I've already demoted my iPhone 5 to a secondary phone with my primary being a wonderful, incredibly useful and fast Nexus 4. Oh how I wish I could say my primary phone is a 5" iPhone 6.

Case Closed.

If Apple finally.... finally builds one, I'll be the first to buy it.

I am a long time Mac user. I am usually enamored with nearly everything Apple because of their attention to detail and carefully curated design.

But AT&T finally got to me and I had to sell my beloved iPhone and slum it with a droid X just to get away from them.

The droid was terrible, but I did start to get used to a few things android. One of those things was a larger screen.

When it was time to upgrade, I went with a galaxy S3. There are a number of reasons why, but one of the biggest (pun intended) was the fact that the screen was so much bigger than the iPhone at the time. Since then, I have found that android has matured and much of what I didn't like about the droid X has been fixed.

The upshot is this: simply saying "want a bigger phone, buy an android" is akin to giving more people the opportunity to move away from the iOS ecosystem altogether. I won't be coming back because I am now firmly in the android camp (whereas I could have been easily woo'd back before my galaxy s3). That means no iPad for me when it comes time to buy a tablet (I think they are great but I am now invested in the android ecosystem). That is a problem for Apple.

I'm not going to get into a fight over whether bigger is better, or whether android is better than iOS. I'm just relating the story of how one Apple fanatic wound up switching away (most likely forever). If I am an anomaly then no big deal. If my story is more common then Apple may need to do something about it.

No, just no. No no no no no, NO. Buy an android device, please. Stop making it sound like bigger screens are a necessity. THEY are not. this is simply a matter of taste. If you want a bigger screen, buy a phone with a bigger screen. This does not mean apple has to do the same, and I hope to god they don't.

Dude, relax. If Apple does a bigger phone its gonna be alongside another normal size iphone. Smif people want a choice it's nice. I starting to get tired of my iPhone because of its size but could never leave iOS. So, if apple where to make a large phone, it would make millions of people like me happy. Choice is good

I would agree here but let me explain why us who like the smaller screen are threatened. Because in general when it comes to TVs/electronics/gadgets (Specially ones with screens), they treat the smaller ones as the econo version that only does the basics (Apple is no different. Look at the difference between the MBP 13" and the larger version, look at the mini ipad vs. the regular ipad). Hell, look at Android. How many of their smaller phones are aimed at the people who want high end phones? Almost all of the Android phones for the tech geeks also have big screens, it's hard to get both.

Some of us do want a premium phone but don't want something huge to have to fit in our purse/pocket/what have you. Cause, well a mobile phone is supposed to be mobile ;). So far with Apple we've been lucky that we don't have to make the choice between nice, premium phone with the good specs vs. smaller phone with the specs for people they figure won't care as much.

So, yeah, that's why we are threatened by Apple offering choice. I'm betting if there was a feeling that APple would offer similar specced phones with only difference being size, you wouldn't get near as many people against it. But that makes no sense on Apple's end cause the products would be too close and they'd have to have more distinguishing features for the larger phone to convince people to pay the extra.
