Yep--if they do it, everyone will call it a me too product. If they don't do it, everyone will say they're not competing well with Android. It's a lose/lose for Apple.

It's a lose/lose only in forums like MacRumors. Out in the real world, it will be the lead news story for weeks, they will be drowning in margins as this will have premium pricing, it will sell like wildfire, an the kicker is iOS 7 will bring at least some innovation with Johny in charge. So no, I think it will only be a lose / lose in a very, very small circle of Internet rumor echo chamber.

There's no way they would ever release an iPhone with the word Math in the name. It just sounds completely ridiculous. Plus who wants a device named Math? I would refuse to buy it for that reason alone.

Sounds like chinese whispers to me.

Thats a stupid argument when they are losing thousands of customers to larger phones (millions even)

Where is the proof of this? By all accounts, the iPhone 5 is selling better than any previous version.

I know people want to coo over Samsung's sales numbers recently - but they still have a VERY long way to go before they are in the same league as Apple sales-wise.

And until Apple stops selling tens of millions of iPhones each year, I think we can reserve the right to say they aren't losing millions (or even thousands) of customers.....

For every poster on here who feels its their duty to inform the rest of us how they've switched to Android because iOS just isn't cutting it and those of us who stay are simply letting Apple get complacent, there are 2 more out in the real world buying iPhones....

It seems like Apple doesn't have much choice left over to get attention from people. Especially after Steve Jobs' gone, looks like Apple doesn't quite know where they should be headed and just follow and joining Android's spec & tech world. Good luck to you Apple! I would like to see how you'd survive.

Umm so if your business was losing any customers you would find this acceptable if you gained new clients? Your still losing millions.

Apple has along way to go to catch up to the mighty S3, which takes a big dump on the iPhone 5.

Nice crippled pull down notifications on iOS. How are those convenient toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth, Silent?...oh yeah...iOS doesn't have them

It's very hard to find a company that does anything like Apple does except for design copying (ahem Sony). If Apple starts following what other companies do, I'm going to dump all my AAPL on the grounds that Apple is dead without Steve Jobs and is no longer smarter than I am.

Still, Apple making a big iPhone would not scare me.

That last line kinda negates your first paragraph. :D

You also need to remember that Apple does NOT exist in a vacuum.

Apple is in the smartphone business... the laptop business... the desktop business and the workstation business. Plus the online merchant business, PMP business... and many other markets I didn't mention.

All those markets have trends... and customers who follow those trends.

Apple pretty much sets their own rules in regards to computers, tablets and MP3 players.

But the smartphone market is a different beast altogether.

Lately... the trend is to make flagship phones far north of 4"

And Apple has... for the moment... ignored that trend.

That's not to say Apple won't be successful. They still sell a ridiculous amount of phones... regardless of screen size.

But some people do prefer a phone with a bigger screen.

An iphone this size would be great.

The current and last generation were too small.

Plus why did apple stop innovating?

Just a Thought

Steve wasn't always right about everything...I think that his method of leading was extremely effective inside of a great company like Apple. But, he changed his mind a lot.

A slightly smaller iPad and a slightly larger iPhone isn't the end of the world, as far as compromises that Apple makes, in order to compete.

I love my iPhone and iPad, but I sometimes look at the nexus' larger screen when I pass an AT&T kiosk, and think it looks kind of cool.

But, who knows, these are only rumors. I agree with a lot of posts that Jony Ive's effect on iOS could be pretty interesting. How fast can it change and adapt and grow?

No it doesn't. There's a difference between following other companies and deciding independently that an iPhone with a bigger screen would be useful.

And I also realized that they don't need to call it the iPhone anything, just the iPhone. There would be different iPhone sizes like the MacBooks have.

Are iPhone sales dropping in number? Then that would be true. Otherwise, it's hard to tell. Keep in mind that Samsung gaining consumers ≠ Apple losing consumers.

One day, perhaps not that far in the future, the well worn "proof" above will fade. It will be interesting to see what these defenders of the brand say then.

Or will they fall silent?

Well look... Apple isn't the leader in smartphones sales... Samsung is.

Apple isn't the leader in smartphone platform market share either... Android is.

Those two data points alone place Apple in 2nd place. However... it's a strong 2nd place.

In the last 4 quarters... Apple's least selling quarter was only 26 million iPhones. The thing is... those are phones that start at $450 (but the bulk of iPhone sales are $650 and above)

Apple really does sell a ridiculous amount of phones considering they only sell mid to high-end phones.

There will always be people who "defend" Apple. But the truth is... they aren't going out of business because of their "silver medal" status.

Honestly... people should be more worried about the 3rd place company ;)

I don't speculate on ranking. But I'd venture a guess that the "silver medal" status is far from permanent. Based on the massive amount of cash Apple has hidden offshore, they've got funds to prop them up for years after the "cool factor" wears off.

Built around one dynamic showman, who's no longer with them, their identity has changed. Unless they pull a rabbit out of a hat & find a replacement soon, which is highly unlikely, the best is behind them.

That's why it's good to have choices. What do you say to people who believe the complete opposite of you in that they believe the iPhone 5 / IOS is much better then the S3 / Android for themselves. You can't say they are wrong since they believe its the best phone for themselves. Likewise, nobody can tell you that you are wrong about your choice in phones if you believe your S3 / Android is best.

Use what phone is best for you and let others use what phone is best for themselves.

Since there were 4.3" and larger smartphones years ago... when did Apple "independently" come up with that idea?

Maybe Apple explored every size way back in 2004... but we'll never know for sure.

Eddy Cue was certainly interested in the 7" tablet size... after using a competitor's tablet.

That may be. But you're right... Apple isn't going out of business any time soon.

If Apple doesn't come out with the next game-changing product... who will?

We know Samsung is strong is sales... but what else? The 8" Note is just a smaller tablet.

When Apple made a smaller tablet... everyone thought they lost their edge.

So is there any HTC or LG product that will set the world on fire?

I guess what I'm asking is... if Apple's best is behind them... what hope is there for everyone else?

Apple could choose 4.3" just because it's a good idea (which I don't think it is), not because others are doing it. In this case, we won't know for sure.

And the 7" tablet is far too small. The iPad mini is as small as a tablet can be while being useful, actually a little bit too small IMO.

Evidently, nobody cares about that. I have a jailbroken iPhone, and I could install SBSettings to have those convenient toggles, but I choose not to because it's useless. For that one time in a month or so I want to toggle those things, I can just open the Settings app.

The exception is silent mode. There's a switch on the side for that, duh.

I just want my next iphone to be amazing and has new look and not look the same for past 4 years. It's boring and over and done with.

I am not asking for a game changer.. But just don't come out w/ same boring crap again and call it iphone 5s and expect me to buy it.

It used to be that apple device were so awesome that people buy and love it. Now? I LOVE apple devices and buy them all but I for one cannot understand their refusal to offer multiple sizes. Fragmentation? who cares? Sammy is cleaning up shop w/ their new size phones. Their indecisive strategy looks like a company who has no idea what they are doing.

With iphone 5, they came out w/ 4 inch devices saying this is the perfect device and size. Now they are gonna come out w/ new size? If it was time to come out w/ new different multiple sizes, it should have been when iphone 5 came out.
It looks like company has no real technical visionary and just trying to follow the trend instead of dictating them like Steve did.

To me, apple is becoming an old vanilla company.
People say apple is making killing. To that, I say, I don't care.. apple is just becoming too boring of a company for me.
Before apple store used to be place you go talk to apple geeks and them trying to solve whatever problem you might have. Now? It seems like it's all about corporate environment. CSR is still excellent but I feel something has changed.

Also, whenever you're talking about the world market, Apple is always at a disadvantage. And the numbers tend to favor Android because they include phones that are not in use. If you're in the US, you see iPhones everywhere and not so much of anything else.

First off, there doesn't have to be a product to set the world on fire. Only super showman Steve Jobs could whip people into a frenzy with his "Magical & Revolutionary" labels & claims about his "next big thing".

Look at Samsung.
Less than three years ago they had virtually nothing going in the smartphone space, save for a few unknown mediocre phones. Then they got focused & serious about creating a world class model. Known as the Galaxy S, they've sold over 100 million of the S, SII, and S III alone! Not counting the many derivative models they also sell.

Thus my point is no matter what the brand of handset, Google & Android have advanced much faster than Apple.

A fact I hate to admit.

Having both an iPhone 5, a Note 2, S III and Nexus 4 at the present, I speak from first hand experience with the latest on both platforms. I'd love nothing better than to report that iOS is far better but it's not. I enjoy it and don't find it stale or boring like some do. It simply lacks a large number of useful features I enjoy everyday from Android.

Going forward its about continuing to improve & not save some features for later as Apple is wont to do, as they have in the past. Coasting on their laurels is a very bad decision.
