Disappointing, as it suggests that future iMacs will be stuck at the 27" form factor too.

Lots of USB-C hubs out there but I have yet to see one that would support two 5K Studio Displays. Lack of bandwidth is given as the problem.

I do not know the answer, but wonder if the next bump for USB-C is doubling the band width to 80 from 40? Would that bandwidth then support two 5k displays off of one cable?

My Mac Studio has the two Studio Displays plugged in on the back. I then have ancillary devices plugged into the Studio Displays. I went with VESA wall mounts that initially supported my two 27" Thunderbolt displays. That freed up desk congestion then and still does now.

If there were a need (not a want) there is space to the left of the main monitor for a third unit.

I have a road trip coming up in a week. I usually take my 14" MBPro and my M1 11" iPad that can function as an auxiliary screen if needed. My iPhone 14 Pro Max can function as an additional hotspot if needed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this starts $3,000 as 27” 4k mini LED monitors are in the $1,500 to $3,000 range. I doubt it will be 120hz either given the issue of driving that over Thunderbolt. While you could get round this using dual cables, that would restrict the number of Mac users who could potentially use the new monitor.

As far as the possibility of a 27” iMac, I think people need to accept that this isn’t coming back as Apple want you to buy the Mac Studio and Studio Display if you want a bigger screen or more power than the 24” iMac. I expect Apple will apply the same logic with the Studio Display XDR (or whatever it gets called).

Have not had a single issue with my two units from day one.But I did delay ordering for several months to allow initial bugs to get worked out.Took less than 15 minutes per unit to update the software when they arrived.

I'm happy with my Studio display. Only thing is I wish I could "fix" the camera zoom - IE just center crop the frame to a fixed setup that I like (I'm guessing there must be some Mac app there that can do it.)

The next model better have a removable cable. I put my Studio display on a wifi outlet, because getting to the power cord to power cycle it once every few weeks is pretty annoying (When the audio or camera decide to break.) Running iOS is great from a software update perspective, but terrible from a monitor you just want to turn on and use :D

I don't think I would upgrade though, the image quality is great on the current model, I have more than enough screen space, the camera and speakers are good enough and I don't need 120hz for editing code. Also I don't watch movies on it, so Mini-LED is also a bit lost on me.

Hopefully this will come in a 24inch size now as well. Two x 27inch is too big for me ... 24 inch is justttt right. The days of one size fits all are over.

Countless better options?

I’ve spent many hours trying to find monitors with 200+ dpi 5K+ resolution and 500+ nits. Can’t find any. Where are they? Genuine question.
Same here. Genuine question. If there's an alternative other than an LG 5K Ultrafine, I can't find it. I fought hard not to buy the ASD (purely money) but frankly I'm glad I broke down. But I need a 3rd monitor and I'm open to alternatives (kind of).

They used to have zero external displays and a great 27" iMac.
They now have their custom chips that take up less space and/or energy.
Yet they're planning to have 2x 27" and 1x 32" external displays and 0 iMac.

what's going on?

There's always the Apple Pro Display XDR, a 6K 32" display.

I resisted spending the money on my Apple Studio Display, but am glad I did. A pleasure to use.

Cry once, be happy every day you use it. :)

I feel exactly the same.

I had an XDR for a hot minute and loved it. It's a full on work of functional art. There's no way I can pull the trigger on one as a 3rd display!

How they want to connect 5K display with 120 hz refresh rate and HDR with old 1.4 display port? All the mac computers has just this version of DP. Maybe they will release mac pro with 2.0.

Good. This will allow me to pick up a used Studio Display for a decent price. Typing this on my ProDisplay, but, am building a conversion van right now and need a display for it. The internal features of the Studio Display make it very enticing for use in tight spaces, the speakers are more than loud enough, the microphone is great for Zoom calls, and the camera is more than enough for Zoom calls as well.

Apple is planning to launch an external monitor with a 27-inch mini-LED display in the first quarter of 2023, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young.

In a tweet shared with super followers, Young said that Apple had "pushed" the debut of the monitor to Q1 2023. Young is presumably talking about the first calendar quarter of 2023, aka the months from January to March.

Young was a guest on the MacRumors podcast in July where he said that Apple was planning to launch the mini-LED display sometime in early 2023. Young initially expected Apple to introduce the display in June at WWDC, but he said in May that the launch had to be delayed until October because of design delays. Apple is also unable to meet the October goal, and Young believes the company is now aiming for 2023.

Throughout 2022, Apple has been dealing with supply constraints across products that include Macs and its displays, which may be the reason for the delay.

Apple's upcoming display is said to feature mini-LED technology along with ProMotion support, allowing for up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The device is not expected to be a direct replacement for the Pro Display XDR, which is a larger, 6K display. It will instead be similar to the Apple Studio Display, which is a 27-inch monitor.

With ProMotion support and mini-LED technology, the rumored 27-inch display is expected to be more expensive than the Studio Display, which is priced starting at $1,599.

Oh, so basically Apple is releasing what the studio display should have been and will charge even more for it

more expensive than the studio display? lol no thanks apple. is the studio display meant to be their "budget" display now?

give me a 27" iMac for a sane price. The current 24" iMac is perfect except that the screen size is small. Give us a 27" version with M2.

so if we want a 27" screen it's either get a Mac Mini and buy a non Apple display or cough up for a Studio Display? lol. I know I ain't buying a Studio Display. That's why I'm waiting for the M2 Mac Mini to pair with my Asus 27" monitor. I was ready to buy a 27" iMac but nah Apple decided to rip the piss once again.

It's possible that this is just revealing what will eventually be the new 27" iMac Pro. It would make sense for the pro model to have a mini-LED display. Perhaps the panel itself is the only thing they got right, but it's not for a higher end Studio Display, but a powerful and higher end iMac.

It would be priced way under the 32" XDR, which could see a mini-LED upgrade as well (and a little more justification for the price). And it would also be inline with the MacBook Pro specs.

Just guesses, of course. Or wishful thinking. ;)

I understand why you are thinking that but my main issue is the following;

  • During the March Peek performance event this year they stated the Mac Pro is up next for Apple Silicon.
  • Would Apple actually release a iMac Pro anywhere near the time of a new Mac Pro?(I vote no as Apple really spaces out brand new desktop designs as they use them more of a marketing tool "halo products".)
  • The current 27" Mac Studio display is more of a frankenstein of components Apple already uses. Its as if Apple was planning on doing some kind of Apple TV/iOS integration with the current model but axed it and just sold the display at an inflated price because it also same CPU as iPhone 11, 64 gb memory, using aging iMac panel tech(though panel is still very good and upgraded a bit).

My conspiracy guess is the 27" Mac Studio display gets axed as they are just reusing older components and the 27" Mini LED replaces it then they unlock whatever new feature they were planning on doing in the first place. This would be similar to how the iPhone 11 iPhone 12 had a U1 ultra-wideband chip which Apple didn't provide any info at the time why it was there and then later on Apple launched AirTag. There has to be some reason why they are loading up the current display with iOS components that you do not need(which is a major issue because the inflated price ruins the current Studio Display from being used in a multiple monitor setup unless you like paying money for extra webcams/storage..etc).
