It's possible that this is just revealing what will eventually be the new 27" iMac Pro. It would make sense for the pro model to have a mini-LED display. Perhaps the panel itself is the only thing they got right, but it's not for a higher end Studio Display, but a powerful and higher end iMac.

It would be priced way under the 32" XDR, which could see a mini-LED upgrade as well (and a little more justification for the price). And it would also be inline with the MacBook Pro specs.

Just guesses, of course. Or wishful thinking. ;)

I get lots of work done on my two 2022 Studio Displays connected to my maxed out 2022 Mac Studio computer. But I am not trying to create feature movie films either.

Even with military discounts, this was an over $10K cost before extended warranties and sales tax.

The 2023 New Studio Display will have mini-LED technology along with ProMotion support, allowing for up to a 120Hz refresh rate?

I get a lot of my work (actually all of it) done on my 16 inch MacBook Pro screen. Not sure why one should need a 30 inch display to “get work done” tbh.

Depends what you do right?

I am an animator, Compositor/Editor. To edit in 4K I need 2 32" Monitors + a Reference monitor.

If you are a coder or work in word or something I am sure you don't need the space.

27 is way too small to get work done, try having 2 windows side to side with a descent sized font, it should be 30 at the very least. 32 would be best. That said, you can get a Cinema display 30 for less money and better quality.
I get lots of work done on a 16.2 --inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro. It ain't about display size for real productivity.

Depends on the work. I'm a technical writer. Typically I have a Word doc, a browser and email all open at once. Sometimes a PDF, too. It's so much more convenient and productive to have them all side by side than to toggle between them. But even on a 27" display, these aren't as big as I'd like for comfortable viewing hours into my workday.

As long as Apple limits the iMac to 24" and charges over a grand for larger standalone displays, I'll be sticking with Windows for my desktops.

If true, this will give everyone who said they wouldn't buy a Studio Display because of the refresh rate an opportunity to say they won't buy this display, because of the price.
A $1.6k Studio for the masses and a $5k Pro Display XDR for the pros … and possibly soon a $2.5 k mini-LED 120hz?? Who will be the target audience for the latter? I‘ll wait for the $2.8k 27“ MINI-LED M3 iMac …

The issue Apple bakes in a ton of things you don't need. Why is there no option for a display without a iPhone 11 CPU, 64 gb storage, webcam and speakers built in?

If Apple could just release a monitor with a couple physical buttons, removable cord, no webcam, no speakers, no iOS chip, no internal storage it would fly off the shelves because not only would Apple users buy it but then Windows and Linux users would as well.

Instead Apple does what Apple does and bakes everything in so that the OS has to control the monitor and it has things you don't need so they are upselling you everything. Apple's own marketing shows 3 monitors. Why on earth would someone need to buy 3 webcams, 3 sets of speakers and 3 A13 Bionic chips, 3 sets of 64gb storage? Just complete waste to spend close to 5 grand for three 27" displays. $3K would be reasonable.

It feels like Apple added the processor because they were going to attempted a smart display. Netflix, games built in App Store.
But at the last minute they decided not to.
Really feels that way.

yep, they wanted everyone to try and buy them until they actually release something good. then even more will buy them/replace the crappy studio
The secondary market has been canabalizing apple sales for a while now.
Apple is its biggest competitor.

As someone who has used 4K and 5K screens a ton and side by side at times, I can say with 100% confidence that 5K is noticeably better than 4K especially when it comes to text. It is an absolute pleasure to work on a 5K screen (Studio Display for example) and I have a 4K 144hz LG Ultragear next to it. There is no comparison.
Part of this is poor marketing of 5k screens. 5 sounds 20% more than 4k, but in reality 4K represents 8.3 million pixels whereas 5K is 14.7 million pixels, about 77% more.

Guys I just put a Hyundai next to a Lamborghini and I can't understand why anyone would buy a Hyundai!

That's how ridiculous the people saying put the Studio Display next to the XDR for a comparison sound.
You’re right. One is perfect for daily use and the other is a luxury, and a liability.
One will last 10 years with regular maintince and the other will cost you a small loan to change a head lamp.
Lol

I’m intrigued. I’m currently eying the Alienware AW3423DWF when it comes out or possibly the ASUS PG42UQ.

If this is 5K 120hz and has at least as many dimming zones as the 12.9” iPad Pro , I’d consider it.
