Put a GPS in it and I'm buying one immediately.

I really don't like brining my iPhone out for long runs and continue to rely on my shuffle and garmin. Replacing those two things with a single iPod would be great for me. But I'm sure that won't happen.

The iPod Touch makes no sense in today's product matrix.

– For music you have the more portable iPod nano, Shuffle or Apple
– For gaming you have the larger screen of the iPad mini while still remaining portable.
– For children who's parents don't want to get them an iPhone, the iPad mini is better.

Not sure where the market is for this?

For kids that don't need a phone, it is cheaper to get use a hand me down iPhone like an iTouch.

There are many of us who keep our music on iPods rather than our phones. There is nothing more annoying than listening to your music in your car thru your iPhone and having it interrupted every few minutes by a call, text, email, FB notification etc...I always have my iPod Touch in my car.

Great news. I'm gonna get all five.

You assume that SKU count based on the current model... there may be less... or MORE...

Back to topic: I find it rather odd to think that Apple would retain 4", when they now have the 6 and 6+ size screens to build on.

Makes sense to update it if they don't plan to discontinue it yet.

After all, the current model has an A5 chip (same as the iPhone 4s) which is also the last chip to be supported by iOS 8.

It's necessary to move to something better for the iPod touch to have iOS 9 and 10.

Apple has not discontinued the Touch 5 yet so it will support IOS 9. Given the reports that IOS 9 should just be a maintenance upgrade with optimizations, it should in theory run on a Touch 5 better than IOS 8.

IOS 10 will not run on the Touch 5 so expect to see the Touch 5 discontinued this fall regardless of if Apple releases the Touch 6.

If Apple does release the Touch 6, I expect they will use an A7 with 1GB of RAM.

Cost

For the budget-concious who like owning new

An iPod Touch is a decent portable media player, internet, and gaming device that has access to (most of) the same apps as an iPhone, for a fraction of a price and no mobile service plan to worry about. I don't see why it's surprising that people might still be interested in it. Think teenagers, for example, who can't afford or their parents simply don't want to get them a smartphone.

I'm no teenager, but I love separating mobile-usage from smart-tech use. The ipod touch allows me to very cheaply get access to the entire app-infrastructure...

And on the side I use a cheap sturdy cheap mobile phone (it lasts 5-6 days without charge, and its only used for making and receiving calls)... It sucks so much to have an urgent call, yet you spent all your battery surfing the net, which is why I like separating mobile from everything else (ipod touch allows you to do it cheaply)

Sure, you can get an old-used iPhone, but its used, no warranty etc etc...

Although my red iPod Touch has served me flawlessly lo these past 3 years,
one must be in the now, so definately gonna get a Gen6 one.

Release it at WWDC

The new iPod touch models should be released at the same time as Apple refreshes its Beats Music streaming service.

The iPod touch no longer has the same internals as the iPhone so they don't need to be released in September. They should be launched in another quarter and at the minimum have A7 processors to allow for better gaming.

Would gamers like a 6+ iPod touch with the same display as the iPhone 6+? Or is it too large for them as a mobile device?

I agree parents buying an iOS device for the children would still be keen to buy them a new iPod touch and teenagers who don't have iPhones but want to be in the :apple: ecosystem of apps, games and video etc...

Except they have a fraction of the storage.

Define "remaining portable" - the iPod is pocketable and the iPad isn't.

– For children who's parents don't want to get them an iPhone, the iPad Nano is better.

Two totally different products. The touch has games, messaging, and apps that the nano can only dream of. The nano is basically a music player, and the touch is an (outdated) iPhone without the phone.

An iPhone without the phone for people that want a smaller iPhone 6 variant... withouth the phone...?

Oh I love the iPod touch precisely because its a "smartphone without the phone". I was just whining about them potentially not increasing screen size :)

They can call it iPad micro or "iPad Pocket" for all I care, I'd just love a cheaper iphone without the phone for at least one more generation.

It doesn't make financial sense though. Why would Apple exclude iPod sales from their reports? They're probably too low to instill investor confidence when people buy shares of Apple through their investment portfolio sites.

I'm going on the assumption that if they do introduce a new model it will be because it makes financial sense for them. And that doesn't necessarily mean in pure profits. I'm confident that sales of the Mac Mini and Mac Pro are dwarfed by MacBooks and iMacs. Most casual Mac owners don't even know they exist, in my experience. But they are still an important part of the Mac eco system. Apple may feel that while iPod Touch sales are low, they represent a valuable entry-level way of getting people to be lifelong Apple users, especially kids.

Then again, we also have no way of knowing if the rumour is even true. I just think that if Apple does it, they probably have a good reason.

You may have entirely overlooked the rather pertinent fact that they are also running iOS, exactly the same as an iPhone, except no mobile radios. Wow, that's quite an oversight!

Without cellular data, it can't support Apple Pay, since it needs to contact Apple (who contacts the banks) to pass the virtual temporary credit card #.

I imagine this would fit nicely together with Apple announcing their streaming music service.

Since the iPod Touch doesn't have a cellular modem, it would still be useful because you can load up on music when you have WiFi.

If Apple bundled a year of free music with it, that would be a big seller. I'm not sure how I feel about those kind of promotions, though. Once you start down that road it's not far until you're just adding crapware. iOS has enough preinstalled Apps as it is.

It makes sense. It's still very profitable for Apple and they can update with off the shelf parts so to speak and it will still be a huge update.

I use a 5th gen iPod touch when working in the yard on house projects so i don;t get paint, saw dust etc on my iPhone.

How can ANYONE except Apple, know what screen size will come? Whining is bad enough, but based on vague traces of a half-rumour? Wow... slow down, calm down, drink some tea.

Maybe they can rename it the "iPad Pocket" :)

For sure there are those of us who like having a tablet (a non-cell-use smart device) that we can pocket. The mini is too big.

An iPod touch at 5 inches would be ideal (or iPad pocket, or iPad micro or however they rebrand it).

It was tong-in-cheek, i'm not exactly shedding tears in front of my computer screen, calm down in your calming down uncalm posters hahah :D

I could see it going to 4.7". Keep the 5.5" phone as the super premium device.

Although, for fitness types who ear the iPod touch while running etc., 4" may make more sense.

They might unveil it before iOS 9 comes. Because the current 5th generation iPod touch is struggling with iOS 8 since it's an A5 processor the same with iPad 2, iPhone 4S, and the first iPad mini that is a possible candidate to have iOS 9 support dropped.

THIS. I keep mine in my car, loaded with audiobooks. I would love one with more storage.

I still have a serious soft spot for iPods. We got our kids Nanos for xmas and it kind of made me want one. The Product(RED) one is beautiful. The iPod Touches are so thin they really are nice pieces of tech; a bit obsolete now, performance wise, but I don't think they should get bigger screens.

I still see a lot of them around among young teens or tweens. I also see a lot of smart phones for those ages... if they added GPS to the Touch then I wouldn't need to let my kids borrow a phone in order to secretly spy on their location.

Bwahaha.
