What is the logic behind this sentiment? You can move on and go wireless with the current devices that have a headphone jack. No need to wait for this new iPad. Bluetooth is well established and there are countless options for those who want to go that route, so a "forced march" to wireless in order to grow the market is not necessary in this case.
And you say it is about going wireless, not because it limits the thinness, so that isn't your reason for wanting it removed. I just find it puzzling.

We’ve seen phones go below 5mm thickness with tge 3.5mm jack and we’ve also seen IP68 rated phones with the 3.5mm jack so that’s not it.

I do however care about the design of my devices to the point that I think a 3.5mm diameter hole that I don’t use most of the time is “slightly ugly” but that’s not my main reason for wanting it gone on the iPad.

I’m mainly a tech geek that wants technology to move forward. It’s kind of complicated to explain my logic about this but it’s mostly because I want everyone to move to wireless. Connecting a wire from a small box in your hand and putting the two end point inside your ears is such a ridiculous thing to do and it’s very inconvenient having that wire hanging there all the time. :D

That being said you’re saying that Bluetooth is well established so why do I not just shut up about other people’s usage and just care about myself? Well, it’s because I think it’s not and most Bluetooth headphones right now can not replace wired headphones in some cases.

My main complaint right now is latency because my AirPods have a ~250ms delay for real time audio. This makes it impossible to do certian things like fast-paced games and playing on a virtual piano. Apple even recommends using wired headphones in Garageband.

Other people want better sound quality but Bluetooth 4 will compress the audio when transferring it to the headphones.

I’m saying that the Bluetooth market is not well established because there is basically no product that can replace wired headphones and it’s not necessarily because of technology not being there because we have Bluetooth 5 which doubles bandwidth and has better latency.

Apple solved some problems with wireless earbuds with the AirPods. That included better reliability, easy connection and better battery life (24h in case!). The market was not there at all, this is why wireless headphones was not very successful before and why AirPods has become so popular.

Now we need any company to continue with the same ease of use of the AirPods and make a replacement for high quality audio headphones with low latency wireless connection. That in my opinion is the point when wireless can completely take over wired headphones. I’m sure even audiophiles will start to adopt wireless.

We also need cheaper wireless options. Right now, wireless is considerd as a premium feature instead of being a basic feature for every headphone.

What Apple did with the iPhone 7 headphone jack removal spurred a change in the industry and started driving other manufacturers to stop putting headphone jacks in phones. If they continue doing this, more and more companies will start to sell wireless headphones. This will make the market more competitive, lower the pricess and fill the market with more choices and better technology. Why do we still not have a single Bluetooth 5 headphone a year after the standard was introduced?

Apple has shown several times that they can help the industry adopt new and better technology by excluding older technology. Do you remember how many people wanted Flash player on the iPhone? Steve Jobs refused to include it on iPhone and iPad and it took many years but his refusal finally paid off and we got a much better replacement.

The same can be said for the optical disc removal which first started on the MacBook Air mainly to get more space in a thin laptop. A few years later it was removed from the desktop iMac which didn’t really need the space saving but was removed so Apple could put an end to optical discs.

Apple is also forcing the same thing with the USB-C transission. Not doing anything means the market won’t adopt the new better standard.

We’re now in the 3.5mm to wireless transition. Apple started this transition by removing the port from their iPhones and introducing the AirPods. These transitional periods are always very painful to go through for some people but once we reach the point where wireless becomes the basic feature of headphones I think that prices will drop and the wireless market will flourish with more and better choices. This is why I think the removal of the headphone jack is a necessary step on the iPad and even the Macs. Until the transition is over, some people will have to make use of the dongle to connect their wired headphones.

I hope this explains my thought process. :apple:

I use the headphone jack on my ipad all the time. And I never use it in portrait mode ... never. I guess i won't be moving up to the pro model when my current one needs to be replaced. And I really see no need for face ID.

If they remove the headphone jack, they need to provide a software solution to connect multiple bluetooth headphones to the same source, for watching movies together. Using a splitter to watch movies on a plane or train on an iPad is one of my favorite things to use and iPad for.

I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.

Why? To save 5 cents? Are you kidding me? You can still use wireless with a headphone jack present. Wireless means it needs to be charged CONSTANTLY. My Beats X needs to be charged 2-3 times a day, because it doesn't have a properly sized battery. It's always a good thing to have a physical headphone jack. Sounds better than bluetooth, too.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. He made more decisions to remove ports and drove standards than Tim Cook has.

So where would the Face ID be on this? Vertical or Horizontal? And if it's vertical, after you unlock it, does this mean every app you have that uses Face ID will have to require you to turn the iPad to vertical??? I ONLY use horizontal.

Unenthused about a redesign. An iPad is all about the screen and I haven’t heard of any rumored updates for it. It’s pretty darn good as it is actually, at least on the 10.5”.

I
I never use Siri on my devices but I don't ask for it to be removed even though it is rubbish.

Plenty of people use headphones with iPads, I do all the time. It is massively big in education as well.
never u
And there were proper direct replacements, such as USB which was an industry standard not a backwards propriety replacement (lightning) or a non direct replacement (bluetooth).
the proper replacement for headphone jack is bluetooth. thats a 20 year old technology which hasn't seen any known improvement. Maybe you should buy a AirPod or another good bluetooth device and see if your opinion changes instead of jumping into conclusion without trying

Gotta agree with that. Everytime I go to use my earphones I spend the first few minutes untangling them, hate it, jamming that ever loosening plug in just seems so antiquated. Been wanting to ‘move on’ to Bluetooth for awhile now.
Why haven’t you moved to Bluetooth yet?

Tim Cook you see those side buttons for turning up or down the volume remove that instead not headphone jacks simple as that, this is just like current iMacs with not Optical Drive which is really annoying if you still purchase CDs and want to rip them.

Does anyone know where I can get one of those USB Optical Drives checked the one on Apple store Apple brand and all the ratings are one star would like one that can play Blu-Ray.

You want them to get rid of the volume buttons...? Why? lol

Can't say I'm surprised. This is why I bought the 10.5 iPad pro even though rumors suggested a refresh soon. I can maybe do without a headphone jack on my phone. But it is far more important on my iPad. I like to watch shows, YouTube etc. on my iPad without bothering my husband. But I don't do this regularly so keeping a pair of blue tooth headphones perpetually charged doesn't make sense. Same goes for using my iPad on flights.

Thankfully iPads last for years. I have no plans on buying another one for a while. Now it might be never...

I've been using an ipad on long haul flights since the original ipad 1. It's great that I can keep the ipad plugged in and watch movies and tv shows, listen to music and play games. With the Bose QuietComfort 20, I can use my ipad for 25 hours across multiple flights and continents. Take away the 3.5mm audio jack and I'll be stuck with wireless headphones that would be lucky to hit 12 hours before a recharge would be required. Removing the audio jack decreases use cases with no benefit to the end user. I would love a smaller form factor 12.9, but not if the audio jack is missing

I get it. The headphone jack is antiquated but it’s frustrating when you’re on a airplane and you got your lightening headphones and you want to watch a movie on your new MacBook Pro. Can’t be done. What I need another adapter for that?

Vertical only smart keyboards would ruin the purpose of the 10.5” pro which was to accommodate a full sized keyboard. I imagine most people use their iPads primarily in landscape. If FaceID can’t work in any orientation, it shouldn’t be put in the iPad yet. Hoping this is a false rumor because I was really looking forward to upgrading to the smaller pro to replace my release day 12.9”.
I personally think that iPad Pro is a “Pro” device when it has huge display area, therefore, I purchased 12.9 Pro and will buy the new Third Generation Pro with the largest display which offers more productivity. As you can see, professionals have a large base and depth of knowledge. Bigger = Better. If Apple introduces a 15 inch iPad, I’ll buy it without any hesitations. :p I’m really looking forward to getting the new Pro this year.

I use my iPad for some music and audio production, how am I supposed to connect my MIDI keyboard to the lightning port and listen though wired headphones at the same time if Apple are going to remove the headphone jack! Yikes!! Bad move Apple.

Will adapters no longer work?

You have absolutely NO idea what are you talking about. What made EarPods fall from ears was NOT the shape of it, instead, it was the lightness of the earbuds combined with the torque force from the cables (jumping up and down as you walk, jog and so forth). The AirPods DO stay wonderudlly in your ears even when you’re running - all because they do not have the ancient chords/cables to move them around and out of your ears.
This has been shown over and over since the AirPods release.

Maybe in your case. I tried them few days and they dont stay in my ears at all. No matter what I do they get loose after few minutes and fall out. Bur EarPods dont stay in either. Its a shape...And Im not only one I assure you!

3.5mm jack is more important than Bluetooth, rear camera, front camera, Smart Connector, face ID. Bluetooth headphones and earphones are suck, never want one.

Why don't you get a Bluetooth headset then? They'll work right now, even if the 3.5mm jack is still there for people whose workflows aren't possible with the Bluetooth audio latency.

The opinion of anyone who uses the word 'Simples' in any sentence should not be counted.

You don't need anything other than a Bluetooth headset in 2018.

Oh come on. The scenario he listed is a 100% valid shortcoming with Bluetooth audio as witnessed by anyone who has ever tried to make music with Bluetooth headphones. A typo or a bad choice of words isn't going to change that.

Offering the conventional headphone jack using a simple included adapter, with no association with content restriction software – rather than placing the burden on the engineering design of the device to provide it, has been a great decision ever since the iPhone 7 introduced it.

This whole iPhone X-inspired iPad Pro design is one of the most exciting rumours in some time. (Save perhaps Dark Mode in Mojave. ^ ^ )

Can't say that I'm surprised, given the removal of them on the iPhone. What is surprising is that Apple has not had the courage to remove them from the Mac line. Of all of the talk about how antiquated and useless it is by Phill Schiller, they still have it on the Macs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Schiller has already explained exactly why it’s still on Macs. He said if it were just for headphones, it wouldn’t be necessary. Referring to the 2016 MBP in the following quote, he said the jack is still there because it’s used by pros who need it for “studio monitors, amps and other pro audio gear that do not have wireless solutions”.

Based on that logic, I think the jack might just be history for the iPad, since the relatively small number of audio pros who use the iPad could use the Lightning adapter, I suppose. But I think having the jack built in would be better.

Apple doesn’t care about the 3.5mm audio jack for headphone use: the infamous courage you reference, which Apple has always had—in spades—when it comes to removing ports whose time Apple thinks is past.
