And why would Apple make their keyboard vertical? That ruins the purpose of it being an external keyboard if the orientation isn't even what we're comfortable with... Not excited for the new iPads this year.

Virtually every device you would use with that iMac uses the USB port and provides its own headphone jack. Typically 1/4" jacks.

No one is removing jacks from professional audio equipment. At least not anytime soon.

Doesn't mean we need it on phones or tablets.

Yeah, but bluetooth headphones have been around since before his death. He had a few opportunities to get rid of it. I think it's possible he didn't because Apple thinks of themselves as a music-centric company, and Bluetooth audio was always inferior in quality to wired. Apple's implementation of BT was often behind and lacking features too.

These were out in 2007, the same year as the very first iPhone, so they could have even introduced the first iPhone without a headphone jack if they wanted

Nonsense, the compression techniques used and those old Bluetooth profiles were horrible quality. If Jobs felt this way he wouldn't have made an MP3 player, let's be real here.

iPhone 4S was the very first phone to have Bluetooth 4.0. What they didn't do is license AptX, and that's because they've developed their own AAC over Bluetooth as well as traditionally leveraging wifi with AirPlay for better than AptX quality.

Besides cracked screens, broken home buttons & faulty headphone jacks have been the biggest points of failure in all the ipads I’ve owned since the original ipad in 2010. So I won’t be upset at all if Apple decides to remove them in the next ipad pro models.

But the rumor of Apple moving the smart connector to the bottom of the ipad so the smart keyboard only works with the ipad in portrait mode concerns me. It just sounds too crazy to be true. As does the rumor of face ID only working in portrait mode. I think most people use their ipad like a laptop and not an iphone(In landscape rather than portrait)...so this orientation makes little to no sense to me.

Soon...

Can't use expensive 3.5mm studio headsets on iPads, Macs and Macbooks without a dongle.

Can't use Lightning Earpods from iPhone on iPads, Macs, and Macbooks without triple dongles or if at all.

Pretty sure lightning earpods plug right into iPads. And Macbooks ARE Macs. So really, you're just saying "Mac doesn't have a lightning port". Thanks, genius.

If I’m gonna upgrade from my 9.7 Pro to one of these, I’m gonna have to live with the downgrade from TouchID to FaceID. No matter how hard Apple tries to convince me, TouchID is way more convenient than FaceID, ESPECIALLY on a large device like the iPad Pro.

You're really not thinking this through, are you? If you use an iPad Pro with a keyboard dock, you're telling me that touching the button on the screen is easier than looking at it?

Oh no I can’t keep my tangled headphone that practically strangle me at times.

Gotta agree with that. Everytime I go to use my earphones I spend the first few minutes untangling them, hate it, jamming that ever loosening plug in just seems so antiquated. Been wanting to ‘move on’ to Bluetooth for awhile now.

Removing choice is not good.

But yet it is so essential to Apple’s DNA. Talk about choice? This is the very same company that emboldened the two by two product matrix. Phil already went in to great detail at the keynote talking about “why” they’re removing the jack. Really, why is this is such a surprise to people? This is just rinse and repeat for Apple.

Granted, but they want people to start using their Airpods... This is probably why their not including the dingle in the box and removing it from iPad in addition.

Just as long they don't do this to the Mac as well, i'll be happy. And they could, because you only need Bluetooth for Airpods

The future is changing....perhaps for the worse.

This is funny... it’s justified to take away the rights of others, but stop there don’t take away mine. They will always take yours too.

I haven’t used faceid have you, be honest.

Well, yeah. It's on my phone.

Face ID is amazing. Very, very, very far from junk for anyone who's looking at tech objectively.

Except for the fact that you have to be at the perfect angle/distance every time for it to work. Same facial expression. It's junk. Limitations that were never a problem with touchid.

No people just want Apple to not remove features they use.

So I'm not allowed to be an Apple customer who is dissatisfied with Apple's direction, but would like to be able to continue to use their products?

I take it that there actually are no benefits to AirPods beyond not having wires, as you refuse to provide any.

Is that what your doing?
Kinda getting repetitive there but it’s not going to change apples mind is it?

Of course not, no benefits at all.

I like a fat iPad with decent battery life, that doesn't bend and has room for a jack or two. An SD memory slot would be awesome, like on my various androids. Mouse support, when?

Lots of people use wired headphones and many of them have tried wireless headphones. This may blow your mind, but some people might even use a combination of both wireless and wired headphones depending on where they feel each technology is more suitable for them.

Removing choice is not good.

Apple has been “removing choice” going back decades.

But what if I’m not using it in the keyboard dock position and it’s lying flat on the table? With my finger I can just tap the home button (I have to use my finger to use the device anyway), with FaceID I have to pick up my iPad or weirdly position my head over the camera so it can unlock. Not easier than TouchID. Sorry, but I’m not one of those people who just loves everything that Apple throws at them, no matter the impracticality :)

Bluetooth headphones are great for listening to music. I use them all the time. But the latency is horrible in Netflix etc and a complete no go when producing music. Until very low latency is cracked, Apple are punishing anyone who tries to create music on the iPad. You can't call it a laptop replacement and then hobble music production.

I have a very nice noise-reducing over-ear Bluetooth headset thank you.
Its great for some things but useless for others thanks to the lag.
Then, I often plug my iPad into my HiFi while its simultaneously on charge... so I'm going to need a bluetooth adapter for that (....another box, cable and wall-wart power supply) or pay even more for a dock with a 3.5mm adapter and charging.

Simples:
  • Fire up GarageBand with a piano keyboard
  • Hit a note
  • Notice the half-second lag before you hear the note, making wireless headphones useless for this. Actually, GarageBand even pops up a warning to this effect if you start it while using bluetooth audio.
Cash only please, no cheques.

The opinion of anyone who uses the word 'Simples' in any sentence should not be counted.

You don't need anything other than a Bluetooth headset in 2018.

I guess Apple's team, or whoever is paid millions for their market analysis, think that the main target of iPad Pros should be rich cinephiles camping at rainy US mountains, with extra chargers to deal with wireless low-def high-lag headphones and a need for thinner than thin tablets. Makes sense and totally consistent with the Apple Pencil as well... (or not).

Yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me. Just annoy me.

I know. It’s the side of Apple I dislike the most.

It’s called Bluetooth. They have been making Bluetooth headphones for 15+ years.

Which won't work for at least the music creation scenario. That half a second lag doesn't sound like much, but it drives insane anyone who tries to record an instrument (either real or virtual) using Bluetooth audio.
