I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

Steve "You're holding it wrong" Jobs would not only remove the 3.5mm ports the first chance he got, he would probably make some controversial remarks about people who still use them. That is the same Steve that made iPhone 1gen that couldn't use any other headphones other than those included in the box, btw.

So, 100%, this would happen with Jobs, even faster probably.

But we've all seen this story - same comments, same narrative with the iPhone, now with the iPad (if it's true), then it will all happen again with the MacBooks.... "If Steve were alive", "Apple doesn't care what customers want", etc. Of course, all those stories are personal opinions falsly projected on the majority, but still, they go on.

TLDR: Jobs would've removed the headphone jack the moment he saw a reason to do it, most people don't really care, the same people that bashed Apple during the Jobs era are now "missing Steve", nothing new....

Some people just don’t get it.
You are in the extreme minority & they don’t care what YOU think.

Why because you can't use wireless with a headphone jack?

I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.

The real news here is Face ID not working in horizontal mode. It’s really bad on the iPhone X when you have to rotate it to authenticate but it’s not acceptable on the iPad that is used extensively in landscape mode.

I don’t see why this can’t just be fixed in a software update.

Yeah, but bluetooth headphones have been around since before his death. He had a few opportunities to get rid of it. I think it's possible he didn't because Apple thinks of themselves as a music-centric company, and Bluetooth audio was always inferior in quality to wired. Apple's implementation of BT was often behind and lacking features too.

These were out in 2007, the same year as the very first iPhone, so they could have even introduced the first iPhone without a headphone jack if they wanted

Oh baloney. Remember the optical drive in your MacBook Pro? Or in the Mac Mini?

I take it that there actually are no benefits to AirPods beyond not having wires, as you refuse to provide any.

Well, first of all, you say that as not having wires is a small thing. There are some really big benefits to not having wires - from riding a bike and having your phone in the backpack, to moving around the appartment, while your phone is at your desk. It's really, really great, hard to go back once you get used to it. The problem with other wireless headphones was buggy connectivity, which AirPods solved. So, that alone is enough, no other benefits required - but if you insist, then here they are:
- excellent microphone and great for phone calls with the ability to have just one in one ear,
- ear detection and auto-pause when you remove one
- ease of switching between your Mac, iPhone and iPad at a moment's notice....

They are great, really. The only downside to regular wired headphones is the price. Of course, audiophiles that have some extreme quality sets still use wires, but I doubt they have problems with a small adapter. That's assuming they listen to music on a phone and not on a real audiophile set up in the first place.

Seriously, the hate towards some amazing products just because they carry the Apple logo is becoming so strong, it's ridiculous.

It’s all true, no one uses wired headphones, the people that do have not tried wireless headphones.

Lots of people use wired headphones and many of them have tried wireless headphones. This may blow your mind, but some people might even use a combination of both wireless and wired headphones depending on where they feel each technology is more suitable for them.

Removing choice is not good.

Soon...

Can't use expensive 3.5mm studio headsets on iPads, Macs and Macbooks without a dongle.

Can't use Lightning Earpods from iPhone on iPads, Macs, and Macbooks without triple dongles or if at all.

Apple was never first at almost anything, so the main reason was that bt headphones just sucked. The moment Apple could've made AirPods, he would treat the familiar jack with his patented "Yuck" on a keynote.

Apple was music-centred in a way, yes, but alway aimed at mainstream, regular fans of music. They were never an audiophile company, really. Their approach to music was always convenience before quality - Flac has been around for 16 years and Apple - including Jobs Apple - never supported it, for example.

AirPods is a product that is in so many ways reminiscent of Steve, that I find it funny when people think this is a direction he wouldn't follow.

You are in the extreme minority & they don’t care what YOU think.

And yet Steve forced it by keeping Flash off of iOS making its users the “extreme minority” of non flash users.

And the rest is history of course.

We can also talk next about the removal of the floppy drive, optical drive, and what’s happening with USB-A currently if you’d like.

If I’m gonna upgrade from my 9.7 Pro to one of these, I’m gonna have to live with the downgrade from TouchID to FaceID. No matter how hard Apple tries to convince me, TouchID is way more convenient than FaceID, ESPECIALLY on a large device like the iPad Pro.

People who want the jack are the extreme minority. The majority of users just don't care. iPhone sales show this well, as well as industry trends. If people cared, most flagship phones of 2018 would have headphone jacks.

You've tried Face ID on an iPad so you know?

I'd argue that Face ID is even more useful on big devices. Either way, Touch ID is in no way more convenient than Face ID, you're just used to it. Embrace the change.

Well said, I think it’s that older crowd 50+ you know the people, when something changes they have a heart attack
I really don't think age has anything to do with this. It's people of a stubborn mindset who think that every option should be available and people who hate Apple that will rag on anything they do that differentiates them.

No headphone jack on the iPad Pro is fine.

But for K-12 Apple needs to keep an iPad with the headphone jack for student use in schools. iPads are popular for standardized test taking and some of those tests require headphones.

Schools won't use wireless earbuds (too easy to lose, too hard to keep clean as ear buds would get used by multiple students, already have a huge investment in headphones in classrooms and labs)

Removing choice is not good.

In a vacuum, no, it's not. But if there are reasons to remove choice - like eliminating a port that has a viable alternative to offer more space for internal components. With phones, tablets, even laptops - every choice has upsides and downsides and almost every design decision is some sort of compromise. You just happen to dislike the one where they remove the jack. Personally, I'd rather have that space used for something more important.

FYI, I use an iMac for Logic Pro X to produce and record music.

I’m just pointing out the writing on the wall. And change will be painful for many.

Virtually every device you would use with that iMac uses the USB port and provides its own headphone jack. Typically 1/4" jacks.

This report doesn't work for me; I don't think there's actually any solid information given. The basic dimensions don't make sense. The 10.5" dimensions given actually do not yield a smaller device (area), but the 12.9" definitely does. How does that work? This one's BS, IMO.

Nooooo! No! There's no actual reason to do this other than to inconvenience consumers.

Yes, no reason whatsoever. None. Tim Cook hit his toe on a desk leg, screamed in pain and then decided to remove it out of anger. Apple engineers agreed because they really like to make products their customers don't like.

That's how it went, yeah.
