Isn’t the drawback of powerful graphics cards that they require a lot of power, needs lots of space for cooling and run hot? These properties are anathema to a Mac which tend to be thin and prioritise battery life and silent workflows.

Instead, Apple makes up for this with optimised software like Final Cut Pro which give you superior performance despite running on hardware with supposedly gimped specs.

I don’t see this changing anytime soon.

They only run hot if you don't cool them well.
That's like saying YOU the human are hot, well, not really but if you shut me in a tiny box with little air then I get hot.

Apple Mac's USED to have plenty of space inside for proper quality GPU's.
It was only when the changed to the thin iMac's for people who did not need much power, and just doing simple stuff, did that all start to go wrong.

Unfortunately that form factor stuck, and they totally lost interest in everyone else.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

I don't think many people give a damn about the 3.5mm jack. As usual, it is a vocal minority.
People said the same when Steve Jobs himself did away with the floppy disk from iMacs. And then with CD Drives.

Mind you, I am willing to bet that 3-4 years from now, with perfected wireless charging and audio, even the lightning port will disappear and we'll be left with devices with no ports at all.

I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.

The real news here is Face ID not working in horizontal mode. It’s really bad on the iPhone X when you have to rotate it to authenticate but it’s not acceptable on the iPad that is used extensively in landscape mode.

I don’t see why this can’t just be fixed in a software update.

I think the problem might be due to usability. When you use an iPad in landscape mode your hands will likely hold the bezels in such a way that they cover the FaceId components.

What if they don't need horizontal unlock because they have two FaceIds, one on the short side, one on the long side?
A bit un-Appley, but it might be what they need.

This particular rumor says that
1) FaceID won't work in Landscape Mode
2) The Smart Connector will move "to the bottom of the iPad"

If these two rumors are true, this basically would mark the end of the iPad Pro as we know it. Docking an iPad on a keyboard in landscape mode, and using apps in split screen is the killer app of the product. If that is compromised, then I'm not sure what the point of the product is.

I must use my ipad in portrait mode 95% if the time so when my ipad times out/I pick it up to use and I do so in portrait mode and use the fingerprint scanner. How do people that mostly use the ipad in landscape deal with the fingerprint scanner? Do they set the ipad scanner in landscape?

Personally I think they should have kept a 15'' and 17'' inch think ''Classic'' Macbook Pro around and gone with Nvidia dgpu just for that product - but that is just a dream!!

Apple have done it in their own way - external GPU support. You get the benefits of a thin and light device, it is also capable of hooking up to a high end external GPU and multiple external monitors. Apple do things in the way they think is best, can't argue they won't dilute the brand to give segments what they want, the masses get forced to comply.

Following from this, I suspect that Apple’s ultimate vision now, is to start producing macs with their own A series processors...

...And crucially their own Apple designed GPUs (like iOS) - with the ability to plug in GPUs for those that need the power.

I suspect we’ll see their consumer machines (MB, MM & IM) built like this very soon.

The MBP I think won’t be too far behind (with the ability to hook up an eGPU for those that need it).

By then, we should have the (intel) new Mac Pro in place for those that truly need the heavy lifting (supported by the intel iMac Pro).

The scanner isn’t specific to one orientation. Try unlocking your phone/ipad with your finger held at various rotations and you’ll see.

Vertical only Smart Keyboard. That would be just plain terrible.

OOOOooo.... Maybe their solution is we just get to use the old keyboard in a portrait orientation...

"While it takes awhile to adjust to typing on a sideways keyboard, many users now seem to actually prefer it, although the vast majority of users actually prefer to type on keyboards in standard horizontal orientation."

FWIW, I am amazingly impressed with the iPad Pro keyboard covers. I find them close to as usable as a real keyboard, and I actually prefer them to the butterfly Mac keyboards, which is one reason I'm trying to use iPads more.

The rumour isn’t going to be true

Using keyboard in portrait is rather laughable.

People would just not use a keyboard they would just use it via Smart Cover.

Agreed. Dumbest rumor I’ve seen. If anything this is a SECOND smart connector in addition to the landscape one. Why? No clue. New Apple Pencil charging method perhaps. New accessories. But using a laptop replacement iPad Pro in portrait only? Give me a bloody break.

Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models will feature slightly smaller bodies, a relocated Smart Connector, and no headphone jack, according to information shared by Japanese site Mac Otakara.

Citing supply chain sources, Mac Otakara says the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro will measure in at 247.5mm tall, 178.7mm wide, and 6mm, compared to the current size of 250.6mm x 174.1mm x 6.1mm. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is said to measure 280mm tall, 215mm wide, and 6.4mm thick, compared to the current measurements of 305.7mm x 220.6mm x 6.9mm.

These dimensions line up with rumors suggesting Apple plans to introduce a full redesign with the 2018 iPad Pro models, slimming down the bezels much like it did with the iPhone X. Though smaller in size, the new iPads will feature larger displays thanks to the bezel reduction. The new iPad Pros are not expected to feature a Home button, and according to previous rumors, will include a TrueDepth camera system for Face ID.

Mac Otakara also suggests that the 2018 iPad Pro models will not feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, with Apple opting to eliminate it.

iPhones have not had a headphone jack since it was removed in the iPhone 7, and Apple has instead relied on Bluetooth devices like the AirPods along with Lightning-based headphones. Apple is not expected to ship the new iPad Pro models with a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, which would be in line with analyst predictions suggesting that adapter will not come with the 2018 iPhones either.

In the iPhone lineup, the headphone jack was removed for improved water resistance and to make space for internal components like a bigger battery, the Taptic Engine, and the rear camera system. It is not clear if Apple is facing the same space constraints in the iPad Pro with the introduction of the TrueDepth camera system or if this is a move to align iPad and iPhone features.

A portion of Mac Otakara's report says that Apple will use a "diamond cut" for both the front and the back of the new iPad Pro models, which seems to mean that the tablets could have a design that's similar the iPhone SE with beveled edges.

The Smart Connector on the iPads has reportedly been relocated from the side to the bottom near the Lightning port, which may require a new vertically oriented Smart Keyboard. It's not clear how a vertical Smart Keyboard would work, as it would likely be unstable in that orientation, especially for the larger iPad Pro.

Apple is said to be making this change because Face ID will work only when the iPad Pro is in a vertical orientation, with Mac Otakara saying that it is "impossible to release the lock with the main unit turned sideways." Previous information from Mac Otakara suggested Apple was working on horizontal Face ID for the iPad Pro, and hints of such a feature were discovered in iOS 12.

In addition to these changes to the iPad Pro, Mac Otakara also shared a bit of information on the rumored 6.1-inch low-cost iPhone. Confirming previous rumors, the site says the device will use a "Full Active" LCD display sourced from Japan Display. Full Active panels allow Apple to slim down the bezels of the LCD iPhone, bringing it in line with the two OLED devices.

Possible front glass panels for the 2018 iPhones, with 6.1-inch model in middle
Mac Otakara's sources have also echoed previous reports pointing towards production difficulties for the 6.1-inch iPhone. When production on the phone started this month, Apple was reportedly seeing a 1 percent completion rate, suggesting a delayed November launch for the device.

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty made a similar prediction earlier this week, suggesting issues with "LED backlight leakage" could lead to a one month delay in production. Huberty's information indicated the delay had originally been six weeks, so it's possible Mac Otakara is working with older data. Other sources, such as Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, are not expecting launch delays, so it's unclear what's going on with the 6.1-inch iPhone at this time.

Mac Otakara has a somewhat mixed track record when it comes to rumors, sometimes sharing information that's spot on and sometimes missing the mark. For that reason, though this information is quite specific, these new details should be viewed with some skepticism until confirmed by secondary sources.

Awesome!!! Because there is not NEARLY enough room on an iPad for a big bulky headphone jack!! Idiots. Apple have become their own worst enemy. And this is from a long time fan and complete Apple household. iPhone x3, iPad x 3, iMac and MacBook Pro

YEah, the more i hear about this rumor, the more i doubt it. Apple has been marketing the ipad pro as a laptop replacement for many people. Most people use the ipad in landscape mode to mimic a laptop. I can’t see how Apple is going to suddenly say...”Hey guess what everybody?! We are now going to force you to use the ipad pro in portrait mode when you want to use the smart keyboard!” I don’t think that would go over to well.

I am beginning to think that perhaps this rumor of a smart connector on the bottom of the ipad pro is actually a second smart connector for the apple pencil 2. I dunno...but sounds a lot better than the other scenario.

As far as the rumor that face ID won’t work in landscape mode...i also doubt this as well. I am sure Apple will do something to address this....and by that i mean not forcing people to use the ipad pro in portrait mode.

Still a few months until we find out from Apple. Hopefully more leaks will shed light on some of these rumors before then.

These Rumors sound too specific to be made up.

1) Apple likely added a second Smart connector Why? Maybe to Aid in charging who knows.
2) You can easily flip an iPad side ways in order to unlock it if it’s true FaceID only works in Portrait mode which sounds accurate.
3) No way they ditch the functionality of a Landscape Keyboard and Foldability of it being a screen protector too. And How an iPad Pro competes with a Surafce Tablet And Keyboard.
4) I just won’t use FaceID, it’s only cool feature is AniMojis which can’t be used on iPads. FaceID becomes a hinderance on a large device. I’ll just use a 4 Digit Pin to Unlock. And the rumor is very credible since there’s No Way Apple Ads a Second FaceID Camera set and, it’s very Likely FaceID only works in Portrait mode.

I miss being able to charge and use wired headphones in bed with my phone... :(

There are phones out there other than IPhone, you know?

Please know you're wrong.

People said the same when Steve Jobs himself did away with the floppy disk from iMacs. And then with CD Drives.

Each one had a worthy successor. Bluetooth SUCKS for headphones.

The only thing this rumor is lacking is a "backup plan" of having Touch ID on the back in case Apple can't get Face ID to work in landscape mode as well.

Yeah, sure, whatever dood. You still chapped because the optical drive was removed from your iMac and MacBook Pro? How ever did you manage to overcome those life-changing moments?

I am guess I am done with iPads. No way I am buying a BT headset for hundreds instead of the $15 for a decent set of earphones.

To remove the headphone jack and to not switch to usb-c/thunderbolt-3 is such a bad idea.

If they were to include a headphone jack and thunderbolt 3 then you could use all the same accessories as the MacBook pro and you would actually have the computer replacement like they are trying to market

Anything less than headphone jack and usb-c/thunderbolt-3 is making this still a secondary machine or a luxury interface.

-Michael

But for the majority of people who don’t use it, it’s a pointless thing to have. Nothing would move forward if everything was left the same.
You’re not understanding that we aren’t given a choice to use it or not! Now tell me what exactly did we gain by removing the headphone jack?

this was always the bizarre move. the "thicker" imac is a desktop computer. it's not a portable computer. it's not a computer people mount to wall. It' literally a computer that sits on your desktop. From the front, where you sit, the device being 5cm thick, or 15cm thick is completely and utterly irrelevant to the actual use of the device. Nobody looks at it and says "Damn I wish the back of it that I don't see and interact with was 10cm closer.

They didn't have to keep the CD/DVD drive. they could have very well kept the same overall dimensions and update the internals to be latest and greatest, while keeping space for adequate cooling AND some access for RAM/storage.

instead someone in their brain said "desktop needs to be thinner no matter the expense!". this is one of those places that Thinness offers nothing and is a massive detriment to the overall product capabilities. Clearly a "form over function" change that had absolutely zero tangible benefits to anyone other than Apple (saving on a few dollars of metal)

My use situation for iPP 12” is similar. 3.5mm is not only useful but also necessary on the majority of job assignments involving audio outputs. But then the users like us that use iPad to make their work productive are not counted as ‘Pro’ users by the current Apple executives. To these executives, pro users are the ones that pay much for zero opioln.

I’m still using a 2010 MBP and milking every bit of life that I can from it. I only became interested in iPad when the Pencil was introduced. Even still, the limitations of iOS 11 have kept me from buying the current IPP. I’m one of the many debating IPP vs MBP for the future. Either choice will require me to purchase media adapters.

I’ve browsed various USB-C hubs on Amazon and dearly wish that an IPP had USB-C and the ability to use a hub to its full potential. I hate to admit that a Surface Book or Pro is becoming more appealing due to the connectivity and other capabilities.
