Take off your rose colored glasses. Tim Cook is far from perfect, but neither was Jobs. Apparently the reality distortion field he created lives on even after his death.
Which is hilarious, to say the least.
After having a Bluetooth headphone, I am less resistant to not removing headphone jack. However, if what Apple wants is users using all Apple products and/or affiliated brand's products, that would be bad for even more people.

Yes, finally! About time! I hated that jack, as well as that lightning port!

BTW, Apple will turn that 80s Movie “Port Bandits” into a tv show...
Welcome to 2020, where "hard reset" your precious device needs an Apple Store trip because no button is available for local hard reset. Magic.

Can't say that I'm surprised, given the removal of them on the iPhone. What is surprising is that Apple has not had the courage to remove them from the Mac line. Of all of the talk about how antiquated and useless it is by Phill Schiller, they still have it on the Macs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think when Face ID gets added to the Mac , they will phase out the 3.5mm jack, atleast for the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.

Hmm.. I need good noise cancellation headphones connected to my iPad on flights.

Please give me the option to choose a wired connection to my iPad. Don't need it on my iPhone, but my iPad is is not a phone.

I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.

Granted, but they want people to start using their Airpods...

The AirPods are really good, lots of people love them and they are really popular

So what's the lag like on these marvellous AirPods?

I've got bluetooth headphones and they're great for listening to music (or watching video where the video gets delayed to compensate for the audio lag) but for anything interactive - like games or a musical instrument app - the ~ 0.5 sec audio lag makes them as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Also, on flights etc. I want headphones that can work with both my mobile device and plug into the inflight entertainment system - now, my current bluetooth cans can do that, but the AirPods certainly can't.

Most people listen to compressed streamed music on their phones and don’t care about audio quality. Here in nyc I’m starting to see more people using Bluetooth then wired
I prefer quality audio; however, it takes a back seat to convenience. I walk to the office everyday and wires just get in the way.

I'm fine with this. Very nice looking mockup too.

As with the phone, the option is to use one of their 3.5 mm adapter dongles. I understand some people don't like this; it's more limiting in terms of charging and annoying when (not if) you lose them, but it's still possible. There are also now a variety of companies making Lightning to 3.5 mm audio cables unlike when the iPhone 7 first dropped, but they're not that cheap.

this leads to the conclusion that apple still haven't figured out how to make Face ID work in landscape mode so now they are sacrificing the use of iPad in landscape for Face ID.

How about they use software to rotate the picture info and sensor data by 90 degrees? Seems technically possible in this day and age.

Ridiculous. Wireless devices costs more and is less available than wired headphones. Just go to any store and see how many are wired and how many are wireless.

Wireless audio needs to become the 'standard' for portable consumer devices. I applaud Apple's brute force push of the technology. Since being 'forced' I've invested in some really great wireless earphones & headphones and wireless just makes 100% sense. Those of you with old headphones can still use them via an adapter!

I use iPad 80% of the time in vertical orientation which is better for browsing and reading emails. It’s like an A4 sheet of paper.

The rest of the time, mainly watching videos, I use it on landscape orientation.

The real news here is Face ID not working in horizontal mode. It’s really bad on the iPhone X when you have to rotate it to authenticate but it’s not acceptable on the iPad that is used extensively in landscape mode.

I don’t see why this can’t just be fixed in a software update.

I disagree, the iPad Pro as the name suggests is branded as a Pro product. I tend to use GarageBand a lot on iPad and it is one of their First Party apps, and with bluetooth headsets, the sounds is severely delayed and bluetooth conectivity is off by default. So this is a terrible decision in my opinion.

The relocated smart connector and lack of horizontal FaceID are also heinous.

I do think there should be a next gen Face ID in the works that works in landscape as well as portrait orientation on both the iPhones and the iPads.

About headphone jack, considering the iPad is also a music creation device for a lot of users a lot of times, it would be foolish to remove it. I do not see that happening anytime soon.

Also, they manage to slim their devices so reliably with each iteration, I would appreciate if they start courses on weight reduction and slimming for the public as well.

You wouldn’t if you had a 12.9 iPad and used split view. Only reason to use the 12.9 in portrait orientation is when reading a book.

No lag with AirPods.

The headphone jack contains some i/o the iPad really can't afford to lose, especially not the Pro. Now, if they were to put a USB-C port on there that could do simultaneous video/audio/whatever instead of Lightning, that would be a fair tradeoff. As it is, only leaving 1 Lightning port removes a lot of functionality. Either give us 2 Lightning ports on the Pro or swallow the switch to USB-C and put the Pro in line with the 12" MacBook in terms of connectivity.

The smart connector "only in portrait" sounds like the stupidest thing I can think of and I won't believe that until I see it. Landscape mode on the pro for multitasking is a key feature and it's nowhere near as usable in portrait. I also have a hard time believing FaceID can't work rotated 90 degrees, i guess even if you have to have your face off center while it's unlocking ;)

This would be complete nonsense if Apple neutered the iPad like this. What's a computer? - Well I'm pretty sure it has a headphone jack on it!! I haven't upgraded my iPhone past the 6S solely because the headphone jack is far more useful to me than a bunch of stupid Animoji and camera improvements. I was considering having to go the iPad Pro route once my iPhone gets so long in the tooth that I need to upgrade. But this decision would make me re consider.
Consider the Note 9 or the Pixel 3 coming up and call it a day.

I believe there will be slight size changes. We’re talking a couple of millimeters here so that’s barely a change at all.

I believe they would remove the haeadohone jack and there’s no point whining about it. The major popularity of AirPods is proof to Apple that people are ok with going wireless.

What I don’t believe is the moving of the Smart Connector, or at least the notion that you would have to use the keyboard in portrait mode. There is absolutely no way that part of the rumor is true. If they are moving the connector to that spot, I’m sure there’s some kind of new Apple Smart Keyboard that can connect to it in that spot but still operate in landscape mode.
