I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.
Can't wait for Apple to abandon something you feel is a required element to a device.

In something as BIG as an iPad, you can't claim it's because of 'space' or 'waterproofing'. This is only to sell more airpods, PERIOD. Look at other posts of people giving use cases on why a 3.5mm is needed in general and more so on "laptop" type devices.

Apple could have kept the jack and still released the AirPods.
But they didn't, because the Airpods would not have sold as well if they had.

QED

Hmm.. I need good noise cancellation headphones connected to my iPad on flights.

Please give me the option to choose a wired connection to my iPad. Don't need it on my iPhone, but my iPad is is not a phone.

Get those: https://www.sony.com/electronics/headband-headphones/wh-1000xm2

They connect to your iOS devices via Bluetooth as conveniently as the Airpods but sound a millions of times better than Apple's offering. And you can use a cable, too, to connect them via a 3.5 mm jack to about anything. The noise canceling system is about as good as Bose.

Plenty of Apple device features that I don't use, but I don't go around demanding they be removed, because I understand some people need and rely on them - some people seem to get a kick out of things being removed and screwing people over.

People should have a look how much empty space is inside the current iPad Pro.

I'd love to know why having a 3.5mm port (THAT NO ONE IS FORCED TO USE) is so offensive and hard to live with.

you want an even lerger display then 12.9" ? You want an samsung galaxy tablet 18"
[doublepost=1532770298][/doublepost]
the 12" Macbook is due for a redesign so...in 2019, it is starting

I only use the headphone jack of my old iPad which drives the old (but high quality) HiFi system in the shed. I guess by the time I need a new iPad - a couple of years at least - my bluetooth DAC will be ready to be retired to the shed too.

It's disappointing, but removing the headphone jack from an iPad is less irritating than removing it from a phone.

The large iPad Pro is the perfect size as it doubles up as a clipboard for A4 sheets of paper.

No I mean the 10.5

The 10.5 body is a really convenient size and expanding the screen to fill the body would be perfect

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

You’re talking about the guy who excluded Apple Desktop Bus from the iMac and told people they were holding the iPhone 4 wrong.

They didn’t because they couldn’t.
AirPods were delayed and supplies were constrained for the first year.
And you still think they could have launched it a year earlier?

There really aren’t any alternatives to AirPods, you have to use the to understand why.

So if you like TouchID on your iPad, a headphone jack, using your iPad in landscape orientation, holding your iPad by the ‘bezels’, or not paying more than a $1000, buy your iPad NOW...!!!

...or pick up a refurb model at any time. They will be available for at least 2 more years, if not longer.

Whenever I hear "It's time" as a reason for some doing something, I look for an explanation of the critical time-sensitive nature of the thing and rarely ever find one. As far as I can tell, there is no pressing, urgent condition that is now SO unbearable that the headphone jack must be removed at once.

All this is, is apple continuously being cost engineered to death. They know they're at the threshold where raising prices any further costs them more customers than it's worth, so they're stuck increasing profits by giving customers less product for more $. This is death by a thousand cuts.

I also don't get why people are excited and happy that Apple removed the jack. I don't need it and I'm happy using my AirPods but, it was still something that was taken away and I don't really see what I gained by it being removed. I could have used my AirPods or any wireless headphones with the headphone jack still there.

Thank-you for your sensible view :)

My normal Apple EarPods are pretty good! Easier to not loose, don't need to be charged, can be used with any 3.5mm device etc.

All true.

AirPods have a two week return policy, try out a pair...see if you feel the same after.

Well guess what, wireless headphones are becoming more popular and regardless if you actually care about audio quality you weren't using the cheap DAC built into iOS devices, now you can plug in a Dragonfly or a Soundkey and if you've got £150+ headphones actually appreciate the difference.

Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if Apple would use a high quality DAC in their pro Models- especially if they charge premium prices. After all, some phone companies in the Android world seem to be able to do that.

The only advantage to AirPods is that they are wireless. The wires have never bothered me and I quite like them. EarPods sometimes fall out of my ears on the bus, but they're just connected by a wire so I can easily pick up and put back in. EarPods would just roll out.

the goal of this change is to promote wearables.
Air Pods are being promoted as an input device to work with your iPad.
the Air Pods are already a very sophisticated wearable computing assistant.
and figure greatly in development of a more powerful Siri and verbal device interaction direction.
wearable computing is where you will find a great deal of apple's future direction is.
keyboarding is so 2015.

Yes I thought that too.
Try a pair for yourself and see if your presumptions are correct.

I have been using Bluetooth since the very first Erickson headset, the w1 is a game changer.

The point is that he forced people to move to a new standard. In the case of iPhone and iPad it is forcing people to move to Bluetooth/wireless.

bluetooth isn't a direct replacement for the 3.5mm headphone port for so so so many reasons.

USB-C would have been a direct replacement.

USB was a direct replacement for ADB.

Remind me exactly what the advantages of the EarPods are?

a) they are expensive
b) they will fall out and get lost
c) they need to be charged
d) they have no advantage for me whatsoever

I think it is quite wasteful to try something with the intention of returning it.

Without looking through all 172 posts, I would like to point out that folks with hearing aids don't like the hassle of using the air pods all the while having to store their hearing aids, like me. Using open headphones through a 3.5 jack works much better with less hassle. Also, what happens when your bluetooth headphones need a battery charge? Again, not an issue with wired headphones.

You don’t know that omg. No one knows that.

Apple has always done things their way even when Steve was alive. How could you not recall anything that happened when Steve was alive?
