Steve would have removed it only if there was a direct standardised replacement (like USB-C). Lightning headphones are the biggest inconsistency and joke. Steve wouldn't have allowed that.

Nobody uses lightning headphones and Apple doesn’t expect them to. If you haven’t tried AirPods or a similar Bluetooth solution yet, I can tell you it’s a huge improvement. If you’re not ready to move on from attached headphones, you’ve still got the tiny little adapter you can permanently attach to your old headphones, no big deal.

And that's why the IPP 10.5 is indeed my last, and I am now only considering other companies/products (like the Galaxy TAB S4).

I had enough of these Apple antics, they only care about removing choices from users

I sold my Airpods not only because of EMF radiation, I hated the fact the battery didn't last long enough and there were days I had to recharge them 3 times (it's quick, but it shouldn't be THAT necessary). However once the Airpods are removed from the case they keep wasting the battery even if not being used/in our ears and playing a song.

This isn't going to benefit anyone, it's only going to force users into buying these Airpods.

Why not sell two models, one with the headphone jack and other without this?

Oh, I see, someone will soon reply "this isn't possible", just like creating a 16:9 or 16:10 tablet in addition to 4:3.

Stop with the BS excuses and admit that Apple never gave a flying f. about anyone

Oh, and this is also a way to force people into buying these adapters to use the wired headphones

They sell a lot

What is the logic behind this sentiment? You can move on and go wireless with the current devices that have a headphone jack. No need to wait for this new iPad. Bluetooth is well established and there are countless options for those who want to go that route, so a "forced march" to wireless in order to grow the market is not necessary in this case.
And you say it is about going wireless, not because it limits the thinness, so that isn't your reason for wanting it removed. I just find it puzzling.

Going wireless is BS. Most of the time is consumed by charging the wireless phones instead listening music!

People will buy Apple products regardless of what they do now.... People have told me for years in relation to companies who sell more than Apple that sales is not equal to quality, but it apparently is in relation to Apple.

So what are these great benefits of AirPods and what prevents them from falling out like EarPods do?

Please stop the conjecture as to what Steve would or wouldn’t do. There’s probably only two people on the planet who might, note might, have an idea about that. You’re not one of those people.

As to AirPods, I love them but can’t wear them. I bought a set and for whatever reason they would not stay in my right ear. I gave my set to my wife who uses them all day, every day. I ended up getting a set of Beats after Apple introduced the W1 chip into the lineup. Sometimes that’s just the breaks!

I think it is 99.9% of the people use the iPad in landscape mode. Portrait mode is fine for iPhone!

I disagree.

You’re completely underestimating the number of people using it minus keyboard, reading and browsing in portrait mode. When mine isn’t attached to the Smart Keyboard, I never ever use it in landscape. I’m not alone.

Landscape/portrait both have their place.

If we’re talking purely about the 12.9”, then yes, vast majority of use is likely landscape.

What absolute nonsense. I’m not advocating for jack removal (although I don’t use it), but this statement is totally incorrect.

Guess you will have to try them and find out if your assumptions hold true.

Or not.

Absolutely stupid. It would make the ipad useless for music creation with attached devices like the Apogee JAM. Why? Because of the wireless audio playback via headphones, there will be a significant delay and high latency compared to cabled headphones. Which with wireless audio makes playing and recording instruments like guitars, drums, and other things, completely useless.

There is NO way around it. No bluetooth based audio has the necessary low latency required for these types of uses.

I can understand the removal of the headphone jack on a small phone, but on a tablet designed for the "pro" market it literally does not make sense AT ALL, and would be a tremendously STUPID decision, and a big slap in the face of the users that ACTUALLY uses the iPad Pro for anything that revolves around CREATING rather than just consuming the latest games and youtibe vidz.

Your friends must be doing something wrong. I very rarely have to enter the passcode on my iPhone X. However, I will agree with previous posters who have said that vertical only FaceID is annoying and unnecessary.

TouchID is problematic for me in cold months because my hands and fingers get chapped from not wearing mittens during brief stints outdoors --getting mail, taking out the trash-- and then I get impatient over the passcode and add another finger which works for say 48-72 hours... rinse and repeat until i run out of slots for new fingers, or just fingers that seem to have any prints left on them the poor frozen things LOL.

I live in the boondocks and wish I could just have "Never" as an option for when to ask for my iPhone passcode just to unlock the darn thing while I'm 20 miles from anywhere. Are we so much in need of a nanny as to not realize it's good to set it to "Always" when getting in the car to drive to town? I'm not!

Anyway on the issue of headphone jacks I would rather they be retained but suppose I must resign myself to the alleged forward motion of technology... even if over the quality of audio issues, I end up dusting off my not too shabby rack system from the 90s and using its even much older but very fine speakers instead. Too bad I can't turn them up to an 11 to get Tim Cook's attention right now, since I'm not really sold in on the quality of audio via BT -- no matter the BT level or the kind of speakers, headphones / earpods in use.

What is the big improvement?

How does it counter:

A) the high cost
B) the need to charge them
C) the ease of loosing them

Plenty of people use lightning headphones, just as plenty of people used the old built in EarPods.

Using an adaptor is a really rubbish solution. I use my headphones between an iPad, iPhone, MacBook and a Windows desktop. That means an easily leasable adaptor, more things to worry about etc. I also charge my devices while listening to them.

Tell me when Apple has made EarPods that never require charging, that do not follow the laws of gravity and are super cheap.

Please stop the conjecture as to what Steve would or wouldn’t do. There’s probably only two people on the planet who might, note might, have an idea about that. You’re not one of those people.

Yet you are by your previous post?

Move with the times. Wireless is the Future. Get a Bluetooth device!

I have a very nice noise-reducing over-ear Bluetooth headset thank you.
Its great for some things but useless for others thanks to the lag.
Then, I often plug my iPad into my HiFi while its simultaneously on charge... so I'm going to need a bluetooth adapter for that (....another box, cable and wall-wart power supply) or pay even more for a dock with a 3.5mm adapter and charging.

I'd give you half a million quid if you could reliably spot the difference between wired and headphones using AAC or APTx without just guessing.

Simples:
  • Fire up GarageBand with a piano keyboard
  • Hit a note
  • Notice the half-second lag before you hear the note, making wireless headphones useless for this. Actually, GarageBand even pops up a warning to this effect if you start it while using bluetooth audio.
Cash only please, no cheques.

Doesn't matter, shown ads, money made.

During his short lifespan, Steve seen a lot of that, made a lot of that, if Steve were alive, he would remove the headphone jack the moment A2DP came out (much earlier).
A2DP came out way before he died.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.
The guy has been dead for 7 years. Give it up already.

I use my mini in both orientations. My iPad Pro almost exclusively in landscape but that’s because I very rarely take it out of the Smart Keyboard. All my previous, larger iPads I used in both orientations. I think it’s the Smart Keyboard than made me change. I have a kindle for reading and I haven’t read a magazine for a long time but if I were using it for those purposes I’d use it in portrait mode.

If the new iPad pros could be docked with the Smart Keyboard in either portrait or landscape that would be pretty cool.

You have absolutely NO idea what are you talking about. What made EarPods fall from ears was NOT the shape of it, instead, it was the lightness of the earbuds combined with the torque force from the cables (jumping up and down as you walk, jog and so forth). The AirPods DO stay wonderudlly in your ears even when you’re running - all because they do not have the ancient chords/cables to move them around and out of your ears.
This has been shown over and over since the AirPods release.

Wrong, you charge the AirPod case which then lasts up to 24 hours, the AirPods themselves last 5 hours and you can literally put them back in the case for 15minutes which fast charges them and they last 3 hours.

I use mine everyday without issue, not only that but AirPods are VERY popular I see people wearing them on a daily basis. Moving forward is a great thing and Apple have created a brilliant product with the AirPods.
