I don't believe it at all. Saying things like "serious bid" but with no "formal paperwork" and "drive room" whatever that means doesn't sound credible. Especially when coming from someone and some company no one's ever heard of. Doesn't sound like this guy even knows how acquisition offers are done.

Oh, and in addition Apple buying Tesla would be completely stupid on its merits, which is enough reason by itself to completely disbelieve this.

Soon:

Customer: "My brake pads need changing"
Apple: "Just buy a new car!"

Customer: "There's a dent in my car, can you fix it?"
Apple: "Of course! We'll need to replace the whole car."

Customer: "My steering wheel randomly doesn't work and sometimes suddenly turns left when I'm turning it right"
Apple: <Replaces it with identical steering wheel with same issue>

Customer: "I bought this car one year and one day ago and now it won't start."
Apple: "It's no longer under warranty, sorry. Just buy a new one!"

I have a hard time believing Apple could straighten Tesla up better than they already are. Tesla has that drive to make something amazing. Apple seems to be mainly interested in their stockholders.
Better than they... what? Tesla is bleeding cash. They were $700 million to the negative in Q1. They are in the process of trying to raise more money from stock and debt. There doesn't seem to be an end in sight for the bleeding since the auto industry is already at the beginning phase of another downturn.

Considering the instant torque and the smooth ride from an EV blows out any gas car I've ever driven

Right, it’s instant power, but it’s _limited_ power for only so long before you have to charge again. To me, nothing will ever replace the euphoria for internal combustion engines that satisfies me with a V-8 that my Mustang GT offers. (And soon to be a 6.4l Scat Pack added.:D)

Assuming Elon Musk's personality does not clash with Apple's executives (which is a big if as he makes Scott Forstall look tame in comparison), I think the combined companies could benefit significantly from the synergy.

Tesla would obviously get a major financial life line.

More significantly, they get Apple's leading supply chain and operations expertises. Obviously, Apple is not a proven expert in automotive, but there are still a lot more overlaps and I think Apple can hire and scale (as it has in the past for Project Titan).

To key question is, what does Apple gain from having Tesla in its product line?

Since Apple has been relatively tight lipped about Project Titan, I can only speculate. But I think it could play three ways.
  1. For those that rely heavily on a car (e.g., commuters), car is among the most intimate and important part of their life. With Apple's own car, Apple can exert much greater control over the experience than CarPlay.
  2. Apple can collect important data for their mapping service, perhaps using these fleet of cars to beef up Apple Maps.
  3. As self driving technology improves and becomes far more autonomous and safer, it opens up new business opportunities, such as ride service and car rental.
No matter what you think of Elon or Tesla as a company, their cars are amazing. Yes, their cars are not without issues, but they are far ahead of everyone. Apple brings stability, operations, marketing, and design sensibilities, which are all important for Tesla's sustainability as a company.

Well if the right to repair law dies out - most of the comments in this thread will actually wind up being true... even for your basic toyota corolla..

Auto manufacturers are locking local mechanics out big time and this is just the start..

Considering the instant torque and the smooth ride from an EV blows out any gas car I've ever driven, what other EV car would you suggest?
I've driven the Model S. Performance is better but I don't like the Model S due to the interior looking extremely dated. Would gladly choose a Model 3 over the S.

I never said I’d suggest another EV car.

I bought my wife a new BMW X7. Makes the ridiculously expensive Model X look like a Kia from 15 years ago.

Just one example? It has 3 zone climate control.

The Model X gives you two cheap looking vents for the rear passengers, and no ability to control settings. The “limited” settings for rear passengers have to be changed via the front touchscreen. How utterly stupid.

And this is just one example. My wife’s X7 is absolutely loaded with features that no Tesla has at any price.

True enough, but IC engines only get you so far until you have to fill up with gas again. Same thing, a little longer fill up with EV.

Internal combustion cars experience heat soak just as easily as temperatures increase. I had a Mercedes AMG 6.3l V8 that it was noticeable when ambient temperatures are in the 90's, which happens every summer living in Atlanta.

With Tesla, it only makes a difference while taking it on the track. We have a Model 3 and a S P100D. In the summer, I've never experienced a reduction in power due to heat in normal aggressive street driving. I actually like to go fast than to make all the noise and only somewhat fast in our previous AMG. 0-60 launches at 2.3 seconds feels very different than ~3s. You can feel your internal organs getting rearranged with ludicrous launches.

The funny thing is that we get more range in our P100D than I did in my old AMG at 9 mpg even with a 22 gallon gas tank. It costs only about $10 to fill up my Tesla at home and it cost about $65-$80 (when gas was expensive) to fill the AMG.

This looks really bad and this design needs to die. Model 3 showed how it can be done and I hope all manufacturers will adopt similar concept. This is so outdated and so ugly that I still don't get how come it took so long to change.
Its 21st century and most car internals look like from 80s.
We need to move away and start making things more elegant. Model 3 is a good start but its just that - good start.

This old fashioned thinking needs to disappear. Combustion engines were a big mistake. EV is the future (for now).

missed opportunity. Model 3 is the best car I've ever driven. 100% satisfied with the purchase.

My Model S is the best car I've ever driven, Once their Pickup comes out, ill be buying on and trading in my Tacoma. Hands down I will only buy a tesla from now on.

ICE cars need to disappear. Turn all fuel stations into charging stations.

These things look busy to me. I hate blank buttons on the 3rd row. Why does the color of the LCD doesn't match the color of the buttons?

I would say that BMW has great economy of scale, have solid suppliers and quality. If you've been making the same thing for more than half a century and refining the product all along, they should.

A more relevant comparison is the i3 electric car. I leased two i3s in 2014 when they first came out. The construction with the CFRP is far more advanced, quality very good... things you would expect from BMW. Good dealer network for service. Ours actually broke down pretty often, but it could just be a first year car thing. BMW just didn't, still doesn't, have a competitive battery/drivetrain system and the electronics are clinging to the legacy iDRIVE concept.

I think what a lot of people are missing is that Tesla is all about the electronics/drivetrain and construction, interior are secondary. Give them the same time and model generations as legacy companies and we will see improvement. With the Model S, Tesla couldn't even get tier one suppliers for it since they were likely to go under. With Model 3, you can see a lot of improvements and the best suppliers compete to help them. These same tier one as the germans. Note, I work at a global auto supplier and know from our experience.

Driving a friends Tesla Model 3 the other day was easily the coolest tech experience I’ve had in the last 5-7 years.

It really is a great product, I just wish they could figure out the business side of it.

ICE cars need to disappear.

Nah. I’ll happily keep buying V8 ‘gas guzzlers’ a long as they’re available for tracking/joy-riding, and there still is a very large segment that support my mind-set, even though I support EV and what they’re trying to strive for, it’ll be a long time before your insinuation will ever become accurate.

Do ittttttt. Apple can afford to mess something up. Buy Tesla and let apple CFO straighten everything up. Tesla autopilot married to CarPlay = apple car.
Tesla needs a car company with supply chain and distribution/service networks to be successful. The customer experience is horrendous right now and they have a bigger problem brewing with their used cars off lease because their preowned sales process is insanely stupid.

Thankfully they didn't get it and avoided the Tesla Trainwreck on autopilot.

Or maybe Apple involvement would have prevented it? I think these two companies would make sense in a merger or buy out for sure though. I think both have similar target markets as well.

Yeah, that is what I hear from the owners of about a dozen Teslas. Either it is a conspiracy or *gasp* it is the best car range ever. One guy I know has four.

Let's put it this way, my Model 3 SR+ drove me 95% of my 50 mile each way commute in stop & go LA traffic, without any interaction on my part other than keeping aware of my surroundings.
Total "fuel" cost was $1.65. I still have 175 miles range left which will be filled up at home tonight for a few dollars. On top of that, if i feel like it, it's easily the fastest car i've ever driven.
