There is no 6K content anywhere so a waste of time. Maybe if Apple made a camera to match. My 27" 2.5K Asus is lovely and I need a magnifying glass to see the pixels.

The difference being that this monitor is likely to be aimed at hobbyists/professionals, not for watching Netflix. Also, whilst 6K is certainly not mainstream currently, there's a high probability it will be in years to come.

There's plenty of 5K & 8K footage hitting editing bays as we speak.

Finally heard a rumor about new display...but somewhat disappointing.
I have expected a new monitor to pair with my 2017 iMac for a while. I just don't like the LG displays without an "Apple" logo.
I was expecting the new displays as: 21.5 and 27 with same specs as LG Ultrafine monitors.
Since the 27 iMac and 27 Ultrafine share the same panel as the Dell UP2715K, I image the new bigger Apple display will be a 31.5 8k one as the Dell UP3018k.
It seems like it won't happen.

Lots of news!

Does anybody know what a '6k3k' display means? Is this like the LG 5K2K? 4K for 4k footage, 8k for 8k footage, 5k for 4K video at native resolution plus OS interface, 6k for? I suspect lots of money, it could hit £2000/$2000.

Who's still rocking an old ACD? I imagine a 6K monitor like this might last you almost 10 years? If yes, that should help a bit with the sticker shock of spending close to 3K on one...at least that's my guess as to how much it might cost.
I still have two aluminum ACD 23”/30” that I purchased back in 2005. They still solid monitors with just few dead pixels that honestly I have hard time noticing.
Great purchase, that’s why I was always leery of purchasing an iMac since I tend to keep my displays for many years.
If Apple come up with solid 6K displays I might jump in and buy couple. While the investment will be high at first, I can easily see using these bad boys for at least 10+ years and have a great ROI.

I'm still using a pair of 23" Apple Cinema Displays with acrylic surround & going strong. I recall buying one in the refurbished store around 2002/3 for about £1K. Over the years it has been a very good initial investment. (the second one, with a small bit of screen damage that I can overlook, was given to me by a generous friend upgrading at the time) Still sharp but biggest drawback is lack of support for adjusting brightness/dimming in recent years. They work fine on a MP 5,1 using GTX 680 with one on DVI and the other using a DVI/DP adapter. I'm now on the lookout for new monitor(s) and the much hoped for upgradable replacement for MP 5,1.

With prediction of high cost noted in comments above I'd be dividing by the number of years of good service I'd expect and it begins to break down into something affordable but with high initial outlay.

Make sure you plug the USB cables in, I use both a 20” and a 23” ACD on High Sierra and the brightness adjustment works great. In fact they pulsing light in the front also still works with the Mac Pro (but not my iMac Pro, I’m guessing it’s because it doesn’t have a light indicator).

Me! I have 4 actually that I still use, do of which are the aluminium 20” and 23” models! Then again, I got all of these for either nothing or next to nothing!

Ming-Chi Kuo needs to hire a professional graphic designer. Nothing says 1985 more than Brush Script and pretty floral backgrounds lifted from some Clip Art site.

A 6K display is great for pros, but how about a lower cost display for ‘the rest of us’?

And no, not in the form of an iMac.

Based upon previous Apple monitors, and their whole philosophy these days, I would expect it to be exceptionally expensive and tremendously inflexible..

..but super thin and "gorgeous" no doubt.

Because back in the day, adjusted for inflation, the 30" ACD's were even more than that actually IIRC.

(I'd have to dig up my receipts - maybe someone can chime in with what they paid out the door/when for a 30" ACD?)

The old 30" ACDs were $3.3k even without adjusting for inflation - but that price surely would be incredulous today, considering the Thunderbolt Display went for $999 as recently as a couple of years ago?

I could maybe see $1,499, anything above that is getting a bit much. I thought technology was meant to get cheaper over time...

I suppose they could do a 21.5” 4K or 27” 5K, though I do wonder if there’s a big enough non-pro Mac mini sales volume to support it? But I don’t think it should really be all that expensive to do a smaller version of the new 32”, so I think there’s reason to be hopeful.

I’d guess a 27” 5K Thunderbolt version (that would still be rather attractive to pros) would be more likely than the 21.5” 4K alternative.

You think an Apple 6k monitor will be anywhere in the neighborhood of $1500?

No. Chance.

This company gouges at literally every opportunity and they are going to release a groundbreaking monitor (their words)... this thing will be VERY expensive, especially if meant to be paired with a new Mac Pro

Yeah, you’d think if they continue with a 27” iMac, order a few tens of thousands more panels for a standalone display.

Or if new iMacs lose their bezels and we get 23” and 28” screen sizes, a cheaper 23” 4K option might be possible.

The screens might get larger like you mention, but I think it’s more likely that the cases just will get smaller, while retaining the current 21.5”/27”. They’re currently “big enough” and there’s minimal utility to making them just a little larger. But last year Ming Chi Kuo did say there were upgrades coming to the iMac display...

Well, with a 6k display the Mac Mini is looking like a viable option. Be interesting to see what the Mac Pro brings. 6k display is a guaranteed purchase for me though. Although I love the 5k display I have never got over the drop from 30" to 27".

Would be great for the mini, but I think it might require an eGPU, unless Apple is going to sell a version of the monitor with an integrated GPU (as was once rumored).

Having a larger screen for iMac Pro makes lots of sense. Not only a bigger display but also can fit more hardware inside.
