How about going with full HD resolution for the entire line? iPhone 7 is at a paltry 1334x750. Only the 7+ is 1920x1080.

Most other high end smart phones are, or have been 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 for awhile. A few are even at UHD (3840x2160).

But go ahead and remove some more jacks or features Apple....the phone still isn't thin enough yet. /s

If they do move to OLED, it will definitely be a much higher resolution

Do you really think they would put it back in after taking it out?

Also, I love my 7. Easily the best phone I've ever owned. Lots of people say the same.
It makes me laff when I read stuff like this.. What did u expect, apples latest phone isn't the best they have done. Every oems latest phone is their best ever..

I don't think there is any phone that fully follows that approach, the best you'd get is a wedge like the Pixel (and a wedge is not the most space-efficient design, even if you do things like a terraced battery).
I am not talking about a wedge. Add 1mm to thickness of the phone. Eliminating the goofy camera bump by making the phone slightly thicker keeps the phone from wobbling ON the camera lens (who really thought that was a good design?), adds some volume (makes phone easier to hold especially if the bezels are going), and the aesthetics are better without bump.

What about...NO?

If you go bezel-free (which I know many people want and I still can't imagine how this will be comfortable to hold), don't make the screen even bigger...keep it so the whole phone gets smaller. There are people with small hands out there, you know?

Are you trying to perfectly balance water droplets on your phone?

Nearly a year old now, allegedly not being updated in 2017 despite good sales figures. It doesn't inspire confidence in Apple's direction.

I saw the SE as a stop-gap measure. Apple clearly recognizes that there is a market for smaller (and possibly cheaper) phones, so they brought back an earlier model to capitalize on that market. I'd be very surprised if the iPhone 8 doesn't come in 3 sizes.

I just hope they make the iphone shorter. It is probably the tallest sub 6 inch phone on the market.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the aspect ratio is a bit awkward. It was one of the first things I noticed when the iPhone 5 came out. I thought that the dimensions of the 4 and earlier looked better.

I had hoped the iPhone 7 would have been in 3 sizes. Each size seems to cater to very different people so it makes since. I've had every iPhone nearly and if it wasn't for the Apple Watch I already have I might consider going to Android (shudder!) to get what I want. Although if they drop the price of the SE much lower I might just move to it anyway. I'm holding onto the iPhone 6 until I find the right phone to move to.

I'm happy with the existing resolution. I can't see any dots no matter how hard I look, and more resolution will just suck up more battery and sap performance.

That said, Apple, take my money.
You know what doesn't suck up more battery? MORE BATTERY!! ;)

Hopefully these will be easier to grip. I like my 6s and would love to not use a case, but it's too slippery without one.

Do you like the pressure point of a wobbling iPhone being the camera lens? That is a very poor design for the sake of "thinner!"™️.

Do remember that many of these high density displays are to compensate for OLED color shifting as blues die faster AND also anything over 400 ppi is of no actual benefit and likely a detriment to performance (both energy efficiency AND system speed). But sure, if Apple wants to win the spec trophy, why not?

I fricking know. With "the best you'd get" I didn't mean the best technically possible design but the best approximation that is commercially viable. My point is that demand for that kind of design is so low that almost nobody is actually offering a phone with such a design.

And what does 1920 x 1080 get you over, eg, 1728 x 972? What matters is DPI, not hitting a given total resolution. And in the context of iOS, is how many points per pixel the design has. Standard 'retina' on Apple devices is 2x, ie, twice each standard UI element has twice the linear resolution as in pre-retina displays, this most importantly means all bitmap assets are shipped in doubled resolution. The three '+' iPhones in contrast require 3x the linear resolution for their bitmap assets. The smaller of the two main iPhones moving up to 3x is the next logical step. If the phone stayed at 4.7" that would mean 2001 x 1125. Though, Apple might repeat the trick of the '+' phones and make that a virtual 2001 x 1125 canvas and sample things down to 1920 x 1080. Though if the physical size goes up to 5", that would result in 2129 x 1197 approximately.

The iPhone SE however does more than to cater to a smaller-phone crowd. It also caters to a more-affordable-phone crowd (by using an older and lower-end front-end assembly and an older industrial design). A 4" iPhone 7 wouldn't cater that well to that market (if, eg, we assumed that an iPhone 7 mini would have the iPhone 7 display quality, Facetime camera, TouchID, 3D-Touch and iPhone 7 industrial design and cost $100 less than the 4.7" iPhone 7).

But you aren't surprised that 6+ months of iPhone rumours have not contained a single reference to a third size given your assumption of three sizes?

That is your personal opinion. A lot of people have zero problems with the camera bump. Or is any design that offends even a small proportion of its potential buyers by definition a 'very poor design'?

I've been calling 5" and 6" sizes for years since we first started talking about bezel-free or a reduced bezel iPhone. I liked the bigger display size of the iPhone Plus when I had the 6 Plus for a year but it was just way too physically big. 5" in a smaller form factor is great news for those who want a larger phone experience without the larger phone. I'm also hoping they can lob off some of the forehead and chin so that it's a little shorter as well, but that may be difficult if they make it thinner due to battery issues. However, if they can somehow utilize that new lithium battery tech that is roughly twice the capacity in the same size, then it would be easy. The height of the iPhone is especially a problem on the Plus model, and is readily apparent when comparing to popular Android phablets.

Has anyone heard how that new lithium tech is coming along? I have my doubts many phones will adopt it next year after Samsung's battery problems this year. Best to do extensive testing of anything new! If we get the iPhone 8 or some new name next year with a big redesign, Apple may wait a couple years for the next design update for the battery because then they could make the iPhone absolutely razor thin with no change in battery life, lol.

I really doubt the new iPhone would be sold in 4.7" sizes along with the others. It just doesn't make sense. They would keep selling the iPhone 7 in 4.7" sizes. Maybe 4.5" with reduced bezels would be close in size to the current iPhone SE? Although I imagine some people would salivate over a 4" iPhone with reduced bezels and forehead/chin. That thing would be tiny!

Lastly, it's odd that only the 5.8" model would get OLED. Wouldn't the battery life improvements benefit all sizes of the device? If they do that, then that must be the differentiating factor for the Plus model that year. Hopefully that means we get dual cameras on the smaller model! I'd rather have dual cameras on the smaller iPhone and just wait for something better like mLED for the display. That being said, I still hate Apple stratifying the iPhone based on size. I'd love a slightly thicker 5" iPhone Pro that has dual cameras, the best display, more RAM, etc. I want the best iPhone without having to compromise on size.

india and other newer markets will want the lower priced model as well.

why not in the top area where the current menu bar is?
I have thought about that too. They'd need to deal with the lack of symmetry in regard to the time display placement. But the bigger question is whether this black 'hole' would offend people when they view things in fullscreen mode.

Can't wait to get my Jet Black iPhone 8 128GB OLED display of goodness. iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black is so 10 weeks ago
