I feel with the USB-C external capability, this really doesn't matter. Anyone who cares to record 4k pro-res likely will prefer recording directly to a clean external drive.

I wonder how long until we get "SSD" iPhone cases - a phone case that has storage built in and a right angle bottom plug. Could also be combo SSD + battery, though the heat transfer of recording 4k prores on the phone, to the SSD while using the battery might be bad...

So does that also mean you can't record 4K60 ProRes to the iPhone 15 Pro's INTERNAL storage? is it feature locked to EXTERNAL expansion drives only? this looks like it still hasn't been clarified by Apple
Exactly this is also my question as well!!! And if we can do ProRes 60 fps on internal storage then I’ll spring for the 512gb Pro Max instead!

well then you will have people complaining about starting price for 15 Pro would be $1099. Many don't care about these extra features and will happily rather have access to lower price.
They don't have to raise the price to increase base storage. The only time I believe they've done that in the past is iPhone 7 going from 16GB to 32GB. iPhone 12 Pro raised the base storage from 64GB to 128GB at the same starting price.

That's what the standard 15's are for, less features and lower starting price.
Although for the $200 difference, I don't know how people still decide to go for the standard 15's 🫨

Can you record in 4k non-Pro Res...? My 11PM will record in "regular" 4k, though I don't hardly use it since my home setup isn't 4k capable. At most I use it to record Christmas programs for my kids xD

You can, yes 👍🏽

If it's feature locked to EXTERNAL recording only, it makes the 1TB storage option even more unnecessary and pointless, unless youre a masochist who insists on keeping all your content on your phone

I was going to opt for the 1TB storage after the 4K60 announcement, but it looks like it's going to be feature locked for external recording only from what I can infer from Apple's vague tech specs, if so, i'll save myself the cash and opt for the 512GB. External recordings great and all, but why even offer 1TB if you can't take advantage of having the extra space?

iPhone 15 Pro 128GB should not exist in this world. It’s embarrassing.

I wish the base storage started from 256GB instead.
Honestly I bought many Pro models over the years, but more because of some specific features like Promotion, always-on display, and better cameras. I'm not a heavy photographer, so for me 128 GB is more than enough, especially since I rely a lot on iCloud. I wouldn't mind a 256GB base configuration, but not for a higher cost. And I feel like I'm not the only buyer of a Pro iPhone to be happy with 128 GB, I prefer a cheaper base model over one with a higher storage capacity

I don't need 128GB right now, but if they're going to be treating it as insufficient and limiting features they may as well step it up to 256GB (at no extra cost I would hope).

You can record to internal storage. If you could only record to external SSD, there would be no reason to say that the 128GB can’t do it.

Who actually regularly uses ProRes video recording anyways??
I have the 512GB 13PM, and went for the 512GB 15PM again, but even though it's a 'nice to have' and 'something I may use', I likely never will.......lol

Me… once or twice a week…

That being said, this issue is moot for me since I use a pro max. However, even if I had a pro, I’ll now be recording directly to external storage almost exclusively since my footage is usually 1-3 hour blocks of time that I need to record.

Makes sense. People that need ProRES aren't ordering 128 GB anyway. This is just to prevent parents and grandparents from messing with the settings and filling up the HD space in 10 minutes by mistake.

Nothing embarrassing about it. Many people don’t need 256GB. 128GB works well for a lot of people. If I am not mistaken, you get phone fully specced so why make the comment you did? It doesn’t make sense. Not everyone likes paying for things they don’t need because some on tech site think it is embarrassing.
It's irrelevant how she specs her phone!
She's spot on, it's embarrassing for Apple to do it, when it precludes a feature of the phone they're selling!
That aside it's only the poorly informed that think the only difference between the 256gb & 128 Gb is the actual storage or the Pro Res feature.
