CONFIRMED - Craig Federighi reads MacRumors ;)

We certainly see, as I know you do, a wide spectrum of views expressed in Internet forums about all things, including our products. I think it’s not entirely unreasonable and it’s understandable that some people who love their Macs so much and see something new that Apple is talking about in the form of iPad, creating in some of them a sense of insecurity: “What does this mean? There’s thing I really care about, I don’t want to see it go away, I see this other new thing on the scene, what does this mean to me, what does this mean to the product I love?” So I understand how that would come out in the form of concern that this is happening, but this is not happening. The Mac is — we say it over and over, we’re saying it again here — a huge part of our future, we’re deeply invested in it.”

Wow this is a huge middle finger to those who bought the current Mac Pro. To see it only get 1 iteration before its scrapped for another design.

Actually I think those users will like that they got a very nice looking machine. They won't get a chance to buy a beauty like that again.

AND!!!

What kind of announcement was that.

Here's a 'bone'. Oh, but if you can wait, there is an even bigger and juicier bone that you can have sometime like maybe possibly assuredly maybe next year or maybe the year after or something but when it gets here if it does it's going to be GLORIOUS!!!

Huh? What? Really?

ITS HAPPENING!!!! "completely redesigned".

Please please please make it a standard form factor and not yet another soldered in tube

Have to admit would be very tempted to buy a Mac Pro again if it was upgradable. Still have my G5 with the Apple display and loved it. Bring it on Apple make us fall in love with the Mac again.

No mention of this on Apple's site, and why would they get out of the display business and then announce in a year from now they will be getting back into it? They also never comment on future updates, why would anyone buy an iMac now with their comment today?

They never said they were getting out of display business. Some of us pointed out at the time that was just bloggers take. The same goes for the rumor monger who say they are out of router business, standby!

Okay, there was no spec bump. They moved down the same old CPUs and GPUs into the next lower tier model, so it's basically just a price cut. The real deal is going to come next year.

Even among pro users, notebooks are by far the most popular Macs. In second place are iMacs. The Mac Pro is third. Apple declined to describe the Mac Pro’s share of all Macs sales any more specifically than “a single-digit percent”, but my gut feeling is that the single digit is a lot closer to 1 than it is to 9.

Think they really forgot that Mac mini still exists.
Price cut..its true but ..OMG crazy pricing still..
Too bad they just ceded the mini market to Hp and others..they could just spec bump those and clean up
but no ;(

Quad-Core and Dual GPU
  • 3.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor
  • 12GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory
  • Dual AMD FirePro D300
    with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM each
  • 256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
What am I missing? Where's that update?

If the modular design is true, I would be very pleased. Now do the same with the MBP and let me update Ram and SSD and I'll be back on board.

Amazing. They apologized multiple times, were completely up front and transparent about the whole situation, admitted they screwed up with the cylindrical Mac Pro design, explained about future products in the coming 6-12 months (which they never do) and people still complain. LOL only on MacRumors.....

Yeah, well, Apple maneuvered themselves into a corner with Mac Mini.
They could've bought themselves time by doing a Skylake version, because Skylake is the last quad core with Iris Pro on Intel's roadmap. Would've been totally fine with thermals and would've allowed for Thunderbolt 3.

Now they have to stick with the dual core version with Iris forever or they have to figure out a way to put a small dGPU + quad core inside if they want to have decent graphics performance. Second option is going to be difficult due to space and thermal restrains.

Some custom AMD Ryzen APU could be a solution, but they would need to get Thunderbolt 3 support for Ryzen. Currently it's Intel-only.

Which I don't get. Why limit themselves to Iris? None of the Intel GPU's are decent for anything anyways, so what do they get out of the Iris they don't get out of teh non-iris variants? These integrated GPU's aren't good for GPU Compute. They're useless for gaming (even Iris), so at this point it's for desktop display purposes, and ANY of the non-iris GPU's will do it the same.

saying "we can't provide quadcore on the mac mini because the Iris GPU is onlyon the dual cores" is absolutely a excuse to not provide an ideal combination.

it's like the moron Computer buyers at my work who keep buying i7's, but with 4gb of ram. because "savings", not realizing that if they bought the i5 with 8gb of ram instead, performance will overall be better (we don't need i7's)

it's focus on the wrong area and then using that wrong area as an excuse not to deliver where it matters

They didn't announce they were out of the display business. That was a pundit inference.

Already found a leaked photo.

T: J. what are you complaining about ?
J: O man, my trash is so full - I can't add anything anymore. We have about 200 designs that I reject on a daily basis, so I need some serious capacity now.
T: But I see you're trying to deposit papers in a MacPro, which is full of electronic components...!?
J: Jee, man. As you say it: Indeed I've got a smoky smell around over the last weeks, it seems to be digesting paper in a very slow manner...
T: Maybe you forgot you had designed it that way.
J: Indeed. We never design anything to be a trash, except almost everything ?
T: Right.
J: OK, then let's make a final version that the market will recognise as such because it is what it looks like. Form follows function !!
T: Sure, man. As long as it's expensive.
There must be a Chinese warehouse with truckloads of these frames. Put last year's chip on the motherboard to advance it 5 years in history.
P. will refurb anything that has enough margin on it - including his ass...
T: So, proven design as only Apple can do. Ohh - I am getting soo excited !

They already had LG making displays for the new MacBook Pros and look at how that turned out.

EDIT: By "Displays", I mean the UltraFine displays, not the displays on the actual laptop.

Improve QC. Apple does not need to invest in and take on manufacturing Apple branded displays, which they will not be able to update as often as the rest of the industry, just look at the state of the Mac.
