How long do you think it takes to design a brand new computer from scratch? But yes, they probably just and up with the idea yesterday.

You can't be serious. It took them four years to realize their can was a mistake and they've been working hard on a replacement all this time because of their love and dedication to their computer customers?

Horsecrap.

They screwed the pooch with their can design. They have had immense blowback about it since the beginning from the very people who didn't request or need such innovation, but of course "we just weren't ready for their brave new world."

The truth is they haven't been working on anything, and for whatever reason, they've had a religious moment where they have realized they were wrong. Now, in an attempt to put their finger in the dam, they've let this update "leak" with Phil "can't admit we were wrong my ass" Schiller having to eat crow. Tell me, if they're so proud of this why no big announcement on Apple.com? Where's the fanfare and trumpets announcing the arrival of the new Mac Pro King?

And now...on top of the four years you believe they've been so diligently at work on the new Quantum Mr. Fusion powered Mac Pro...we have to wait yet another year?

They haven't even started working on it until NOW. From Phil Schiller in this article, "and that’ll take longer than this year to do."

Again...Horsecrap.

Okay, there was no spec bump. They moved down the same old CPUs and GPUs into the next lower tier model, so it's basically just a price cut. The real deal is going to come next year.

Even among pro users, notebooks are by far the most popular Macs. In second place are iMacs. The Mac Pro is third. Apple declined to describe the Mac Pro’s share of all Macs sales any more specifically than “a single-digit percent”, but my gut feeling is that the single digit is a lot closer to 1 than it is to 9.

Think they really forgot that Mac mini still exists.
They mention the Mac mini in the DF piece.

"Immense blowback..." from a single digit user base..., right...

Well, I guess i have to eat some crow. Guess all the backlash made Apple sit up and take notice, and they realised that the pro market, small as it may be, was not a market they could afford to neglect or alienate.

This is a really weird way for Apple to publicly release such information. So they just officially leaked such info to daring fireball exclusively? Aren't there rules in place that force publicly owned corporations to share any information relevant for the stock price with each stakeholder at the same time, like through a press release, the website etc. Announcing strategic directions for the Mac desktop line seems quite relevant to me, esp. after such long silence here and many people fearing the worst.
If you read the DF piece you'll see there were 5 outlets who got the news.

"Until then, Apple is refreshing its current Mac Pro with a minor power boost. For $2,999 you can now purchase a Mac Pro with a 6-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500s, and 16GB of RAM. While the $3,999 model will include an 8-core Xeon processor and dual AMD FirePro D700s."

So the main driving force of the Mac Pro as it is, the two OpenCL capable pro GPUs, weren't actually updated?

Good news on the upgradable redesign though. Reading between the lines, it seems they regretted the circular shape with triangle internal arrangement as it forces them into paired GPUs, while the market went to larger single cards.

Apple Branded Glossy Display? Annoyingly reflective+Apple Tax=No thanks.

Just focus on a decent desktop and I would be full on excited to pay the Apple Tax.

I sort of like the trash can option. Runs quiet, good on gas, decent power. But I would like to see a PROPER tower. The 5,1 format was just so solid. So much you can do with it, all within 1 case, tucked under the desk.

A good tower that will let users take advantage of the ever advancing video card options if they so choose.

It would be interesting if they switched to AMD Ryzen for Pro. Not going to happen probably.
That's what I was wondering about. I'm curious how much work it would take. It seems like it's better suited to workstation uses than intel. And considerably cheaper

Why would you ever buy into Apple's Mac Pro ecosystem? Remember 4 years ago when Phil Schiller stood on stage and said, "Can't innovate my ass..." and then Apple proceeds to forget about the Mac Pro for 4 years. People's memory is so short around here.

What people should be looking for are signs from apple that it is a sustained campaign with regular updates in the hopper year in and year out. Otherwise why would you ever buy into the "Pro" ecosystem? Apple has proven that they really don't care about you as a Pro user. Why would you give your money?

So, someday, at least a year from now, Apple will update an old version of an expensive and less-than-mainstream computer purposefully not designed or marketed for the vast majority of users.

Yay?

Seriously, the Pro-Watchband that goes with this will be epic.
