CarPlay is now available in more than 800 vehicle models sold in the U.S., according to a recently updated page on Apple's website. Until last week, the page said the in-car software platform was available in more than 600 vehicle models. Apple added many 2023 and 2024 vehicle models to the list as part of the update.

The updated figure comes after GM announced that it plans to phase out CarPlay in future electric vehicles in favor of its own in-car software platform, developed in partnership with Google. The decision led to backlash from some customers given the immense popularity of CarPlay, but GM doubled down on the plans in an interview with The Verge last week, saying it is building a "holistically integrated" operating system with a "much-improved navigation and charging experience for future EV owners."

At WWDC last year, Apple stated that 79% of U.S. buyers would only consider a vehicle that works with CarPlay, and said the platform is available in 98% of vehicles sold in the country. "It's a must-have feature when shopping for a new vehicle," touted Apple.

Apple plans to introduce the next generation of CarPlay later this year, promising support for multiple displays across the dashboard, instrument cluster integration, built-in climate controls, an FM radio app, widgets, increased personalization, and more. Apple said the first vehicles with support for the new CarPlay experience will be announced later this year, with over a dozen automakers committed to offering it.

In related news, code on Apple's servers suggests that British automaker Lotus is planning to support Apple's digital car key feature in the Wallet app, which would allow future vehicles to be unlocked, locked, and started with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

I don’t understand why GM don’t ge it, I don’t want to learn yet another proprietary GPS system with all their unique foibles.

This is exact reason why Apple is building their own car right now, that is much better and will absolutely change the auto industry. And will likely destroy Tesla.

Which will require Android phone for seamless integration since the built in system uses Android. Phone’s going to be needed likely for initial setup and that’s where Android phone comes in.
It won't require a phone at all!! That's like saying buying an Android tablet requires you to have an Android phone... The most you may need is a Google account (and you can probably create a new one just for the car if you don't want to use your personal one or don't have one).
 
You say you understand but continue to give examples that show you don't. You don't want heated seats, don't buy a vehicle that has them. Vehicle manufactures aren't going to give away free hardware (wiring harness and controls) in the hopes that people are going to subscribe to the heated seat feature. (And may God help us if we ever become dumb enough to want that.) If this did happen you would still be paying for the heated seat hardware at the time of purchase, plus an additional cost when you go to use them. Most vehicles now have them standard because it's cheaper for them to do it that way.

I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from the Canadian border. I'm aware of the weather they have. My home office is in Texas. I'm also aware of the weather they have there. I've used heated seats in 80+ degree weather when my back is acting up. Weather isn't the only factor of when I'm using AC or heated seats.

Hardware and software are two completely different things. You can add/take away software with a flick of a switch. You can't do that with hardware.

If you feel better paying every time you use your heated seats or AC PM me and I'll send you my Venmo account. $5 /day sounds about right to me. 😉

There are a lot of examples of hardware with components that are not accessible unless you pay to unlock them. A number of fitness wearables operate on this model. My SPOT emergency beacon includes hardware that allows for more enhanced communication - if I want to pay for it.

It's not unreasonable to think that car manufacturers might build hardware into their vehicles and then later charge for unlocking those features. What taking that approach does to the base price of the vehicle versus the current model of charging for additional features at time of purchase remains to be seen.

But seriously, get over your nasty ego. You're not anymore right than I am. Everyone is just speculating here. And frankly, there's no evidence that GM plans to charge for seat heaters or intermittent wipers or anything else. Also, nothing prevents them from doing all of that AND supporting CarPlay, so the argument that they're dropping CarPlay in order to push subscription features doesn't even add up.
 
Two different markets. Adobe and Microsoft definitely drove the SaaS model for "professional" software. Apple has pushed it hard on the "consumer" software side. Apple's one consistent revenue growth bright spot has been Services for several years now. Let's not pretend that Apple isn't a major driver (if not THE major driver) of the transition to SaaS. They certainly are in the consumer software market.

As for what constitutes an "optional extra", that's personal. Adobe Creative Cloud is an optional extra for me. Same goes for Office365. I don't subscribe to either of those services. My subscription to Apple Music is not optional. So let's stop with the value judgments in an effort to give Apple a pass, ok?
Sorry, but you are wrong on both fronts.
MS heavily marketed Office 365 to consumers (e.g. the Family package clearly isn't aimed at business) and even cut off the ability to get the perpetual licence for the Home Use Program.

Name me one piece of software that Apple offers as a subscription that they used to offer as a perpetual licence. The iWork apps, Garage Band, iMovie - all consumer apps from Apple that are not only not subscription but are free. Even MacOS updates are free when they used to be chargable. Services like Apple Music, TV+, News+, Fitness+ etc are not a software subscripton, but a media subscription - you are paying a subscription fee because new media is constantly being added.

I never give Apple a pass - their constant price increases to compoensate for falling device sales and pretty poor level of technology on the non-Pro iPhone are examples of things that are a poor showing, but I just don't see how you can belive that Apple drove SaaS.

Totally agree with others, reason not to get a GM car!
 
Guess I’m scratching GM off my next car buying list. Smart move GM, failing to see the Venn diagram between EV enthusiasts and Carplay enthusiasts. Hint: It’s probably more than 75%.
 
Still, my point is valid. What is going to be the resale value of a car that’s 5 years old with 80-90,000 miles on it? Not good, if at all. Hybrids still solve a problem in that they never need to be hooked up to the grid. We don’t need them to rely on a grid that is aging and will go over capacity, and drivers don’t need to rely on expensive charging stations, especially if they live in apartments. EVs have a lot of real-world problems that many seem content to ignore.
Well here in the UK, a Tesla Model S with 80k+ miles on the clock is around £25k used (verses a new price of around £60-80k) so it has lost around two thirds of it's price. A BMW 5 series of the same vintage with 80k+ miles on the clock is around £15-20k used (verses a new price of £40-45k) so that has also lost around two thirds of it's price. Source: Autotrader UK. I don't know about the US but it wouldn't surprise me if it was similar.

Yes, EVs aren't for everyone yet, but I can pretty much guaratee that hybrids will disapear in the next 15-20 years as the cost of a BEV will fall below that of an ICE car (never mind a hybrid that has to have two drivetrains). You are correct in saying that much more charging infrastructure is needed, but the market will dictate it will come. Apartments with no charing facilities will start to struggle to be let out if there are no charging facilities. People will start to switch to supermarkets that offer charging in the car parks.

Tesla had a great UI. Then Christmas 2021 happened and that UI was a huge pile of crap. They hid things in sub menus and replaced the clean icons with kiddie android crap.

I sold my Model 3 in May 2022 because the update was a complete pile of trash. I spent 5 months trying to get them to restore the software with no luck.
 
It’s clearly a bad idea. But it pales in comparison to how much of a bad idea EVs are 🤣 if it was all vehicles, sure, goodbye GM. But since ICE vehicles aren’t going anywhere until we find a solution that’s better for the planet, I doubt many real Americans are going to miss out.

As if EVs needed another reason to suck. 🤣
 
GM will ultimately learn this is the wrong move.

My wife and I leased new cars last year and both wanted CarPlay in our respective vehicles. We would not consider a vehicle that does not have the feature (granted this has been the case in the previous cars we have leased).
It’s only on EVs. So they’ll be fine. It’s not like EVs are going to dominate the market in the long run.

As soon as everyday non car people start getting to 7 years and having dead batteries… you watch. The phrase lawn ornament will be redefined.

You know when your 5 year old £1249 MacBook ends up needing a new battery that costs £749 from Apple - and only apple can provide it - and it basically makes an otherwise perfect laptop unusable and uneconomical? Yeah… like that. But 30-40x worse.

Let people connect iPhone's or Androids. or nothing at all.

But don't put google on the car automatically removing privacy from google. they stink for that.
 
Some of the top brasses of some car manufacture brand are old school executives and don't embrace changes very well. That seems to be the case with GM. Just saying. I could be wrong in that assessment.

I waited for the Buick TourX for quite some time. I was hot and excited. I couldn't want to buy it. Top of the line or bust! $43k or so (like 4-5 years ago).

When they finally started appearing on dealer lots, I drove some 200 miles to a dealer that had one, ready to buy. Took one for a test drive. Awesome!!!

After the test drive I was giving it a walk around....popped open the back and got confused. I asked the sales guy where the spare tire was. He said it doesn't have one. Can't even get one as an option! Nowhere to put it, since they put a subwoofer where a spare tire would normally go.

I left...disgusted. I didn't buy a GM vehicle because it had no spare tire. They're nuts if they think I won't not buy one because it doesn't have CarPlay.

I currently own a 2015 Fiat 500 electric. No CarPlay, of course, but it's painful. I like smaller cars, and don't need an SUV. I will be moving across the country in about a year, and I had been planning on buying a Bolt after making the move. The absence of CarPlay has sent me back to proverbial drawing board. I simply won't buy a car without CarPlay. So, that's at least *one* sale they've lost, fwiw.

Yeah, well the good thing about Google compared to Apple is they don’t bend to China so much. Same with Facebook too. And we all know how much it respects privacy….

So kudos to the two ‘hated’ domestics that don’t value privacy. Apple is as bad for allowing what it does just to sell in China.
 
It's certainly not a must-have and if you're daft enough to base the purchase of a vehicle on whether or not it has CarPlay, well I guess you can just be daft. It's about the least important factor when making a vehicle decision.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but you also certainly dont speak for everyone. The infotainment system is a huge part of the driving experience for many people.

I almost bought a Toyota Highlander in 2017, but it didn't come with an Android Auto/Apple CarPlay head unit at the time. Instead I bought a Subaru Ascent, and I couldn't be happier. I'll probably buy another Subaru next time around. Toyota lost one potential sale, and potentially future sales, because of that.

Stupid decision by GM, not that they were on my “next new car” radar.
