A strange issue causing the rear camera to vibrate on some iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models does not necessitate a repair, according to Apple.

When asked if customers who already experienced the issue on their new iPhone should visit an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple said users simply need to update their iPhone once a software update with a fix is released next week, suggesting that the issue does not cause permanent hardware damage to the device.

"We're aware of the issue and a fix will be released next week," an Apple spokesperson informed MacRumors earlier today. Apple did not provide any further details, but it's likely that the fix will be included in an iOS 16.0.2 software update.

Following the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, some users have noticed that the rear camera's main/bottom lens vibrates uncontrollably when the camera is opened in apps such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram, resulting in the lens making a rattling sound and shaky video appearing within the viewfinder on the device.

YouTuber Luke Miani claimed that the issue resulted in the main lens on an iPhone 14 Pro Max that he was testing being unable to focus properly in subsequent usage, even in the Camera app. Miani said that he took the iPhone to an Apple Store and was able to exchange the device for a new one, but it's unclear if there was any permanent damage.

Apple has not revealed the underlying cause of the issue. The main lens on both iPhone 14 Pro models features new "second-generation" sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and it is possible that the stabilizer is acting up for reasons unclear, but this is only speculation. In any case, the problem should be fixed in a matter of days.

It's unclear if next week's update will address a few other camera and AirDrop bugs that have been uncovered on iPhone 14 models since they launched on Friday.

If you vibrate at the same frequency you don't notice it.

What is the major hardware upgrade beside processor. Its the Camera.
Many people asking, how it can damage. During normal operation there is no sound of any kind during image stabilization. But with this violent vibrations, there is a noise which indicates sensor hitting lens, or walls or etc. This physical hitting of sensor damages it, damages suspension and magnetic coils being used for balance and stabilization. A software may prevent that violent shaking but the phone being through already should be considered damaged. How expensive it will be to repair phone once out of warranty. If Hardware issue, apple will take years to acknowledge.

:cough: Bulls**t

Some people HAVE reported inability to focus in the stock camera app after having this issue, and Apple HAS replaced some phones already over this.

Maybe Apple figured out a way in software to "reset" whatever goes out of alignment when the problem occurs, but there has been evidence of something that looks a lot like "damage". Hopefully it's not!

Either way, this is costing Apple sales. I was on the fence about upgrading this year, and was going to make my decision in a month or so. This has pushed me squarely into "I'll upgrade next year". I kinda want USB-C anyway, and my 11PM is still excellent with good battery life. This has been a bad iPhone launch year for Apple, the first bad one in some time.

Apple said there is a fix coming in an update soon, and Apple said the hardware is OK.

Class action incoming. Someone in washington will have this happen to their phone. And apple will be there to coddle their balls to keep quiet.

My iphone is 3 days old and no matter what I cant take clear images. About 35 min ago my camera looked like a 10” sub woofer playing drum and bass. And now the sound is gone and no matter what I do. No matter the resets or the re install of iOS16 I CANT FOCUS ANY PICTURE I try to take. Apple wants to replace my phone. Its three days old….. ffs. Im returning it for a refund as I paid for it in full. Putting a new battery into my 12PM and calling it a day.

Is this actually something that can be fixed with software? Or is this just a patch to try to fix an actual hardware problem? From the videos I've seen it looks bad, I'd want a new phone with an updated camera.
Well you could cripple OIS to tone down the hysterics in the short term. It would be interesting to see how iPhones which had considerable buzzing and shaking - handled the action mode compared to non-affected phones after the software updates.

Keep in mind some apparently can have the sensor scratched if the buzzing and shaking carry on too long. Then it becomes a hardware problem.

Odd that it doesn’t impact apples camera. I wish I knew enough code to understand the problem - very interesting.

Cuts both ways but is it better to be a critic or to worship corporations?
On how about neither one? You don’t need to worship them like they are some sort of present from the heavens, but you don’t need to act like they’re all a bunch of evil super villains out to get you. They’re just selling stuff and you have a choice to buy it or not.

I’m not saying some don’t have rotten aspects but there’s no need to go all anti-corporation.

Is there any actual evidence of this other than just people saying it can happen? I’m guessing not since Apple said there’s no hardware damage

You’d expect a software issue to happen regardless of hardware.

You people have been spoiled by digital systems...

Sounds to me like someone got too aggressive in tuning their control loop. There's a fine line between responsive and oscillatory.

I don't disagree with that part. But, these are a hard facts?

"Apple literally baiting people to damage their iphones...." (action mode has nothing to do with high frequency motorcycles, nor do they advertise it for that)

"I guess this is Apple's way to improve their profitability on repairs?"

Looks like wild speculation to me

Quality control is no longer as it used to be.

Yes, yes—of course, we'll let everyone know that their devices need to be repaired because we love having to perform thousands of free repairs/device swaps and inflate our refurbished inventory.

While a repair may not be necessary, this is like buying a "new" car that has 50,000 miles on the engine already. If this issue has happened to you, your camera's IBIS system has been stressed far beyond what it would have been, and you should go in and try to get a replacement as soon as possible.
I love how people who are essentially clueless about the mechanics of an item they know little to nothing about somehow become self proclaimed experts on a subject.

I’m just relaying information as I come across it. Has Apple ever made a misstatement before? Everything is still up in the air and nothing is certain - yet…

Too often to be considered seriously. I mean there is one Luke's video from 2021 when he is stating that Mac Pro Late 2013 (trashcan) is old and slow.....really, 9-10 year old technology is old and slow.....just one oh his genius moments.

I mean he is considering himself a serious reviewer because he knows how to unscrew few bolts and add memory.....give me a break. The best he can do is make faces for video thumbnails.
YouTube content creators are in it for a business. They are selling YouTube videos by way of ads. They are not doing it for entertainment. They actually make quite a bit of money and have people on staff working with them. It’s not Luke in his basement.

Unfortunately, creators like max tech have shown that this type of content sells. Luke is just doing what he supposed to do to make money. Also the stupid looking face thumbnail sells. It’s not just in tech videos. Look at other videos with different topics.

If you don’t like this content, then don’t watch it and the creators will stop making it. Right now people want it and are buying it.

But seriously, how did nobody inside of Apple catch this bug? Or did they know and ship anyway?
My guess is it only happens on some devices, due to manufacturing tolerances. It may simply not have occurred on any of the prototypes and test production units.
