I'd nearly guarantee it's related to one or more of the suits. When battery scandal began with iOS 11, Apple refused to replace my original battery at the genius bar, saying it was over 80% capacity. Yet it lasted about 3-4 hours tops. This was intentional on Apple's part, to try to force upgrades with iOS 11. I'm sure many people in the same situation were forced to third party batteries, especially if they couldn't afford to buy a new phone. Hopefully they are being destroyed in some courtroom this very moment for their criminal actions.


Edit it add:. and yes, intentionally damaging people's personal property to try to extort money from them is CRIMINAL.
 
That is true.

About last week when I had my iPhone battery replaced. Apple staff told me that they won't replaced the battery if they see that there is already a third party parts installed on that.

And my other iPhone battery was replaced last December but before that..they told me there is a chance that my battery won't get replaced because they detected a third party battery installed on my iPhone even I never had it replaced prior to that day.

Hopefully, this memo will be consistent to all Apple Stores.

Apple should have been doing that all along. Apple has good service, there's no denying that. They also have some undeniable idiosyncratic regulations that defy common sense.
So yeah, we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. Apple's service can be good. This just ain't the reason to proclaim it so.
 
I have a feeling that they also couldn't sustain the support load when they introduced the program.
 
I think this is good news. I would be fairly unhappy if I was forced by my BMW to only service my car at their dealerships for maintenance.

As a former Genii, I can assure that they've flipflopped this a dozen times. Flatly, the DOS is due to the extreme possibility of unseen existing damage or faulty parts from the 3rd party. In my 10 years, I serviced thousands of phones and saw hundreds with 3rd party repairs/parts. 70% were missing screws, had wrong parts, missing adhesives...
 
This should have always been the case, smh... Imagine if a dealership denied working on a car because you got a better aftermarket battery installed...
The problem here is that “better” aftermarket batteries are less likely to be found in smartphones. Instead, there are loads of cheap knock-offs that won’t last a year, and maybe even damage the circuit board.

So let’s say you sell your old iPhone to someone on eBay, the buyer opens the phone and changes the battery, and then later decides they wanted to return the phone for a refund. Would you hesitate? What if you refused and they gave you negative feedback? Apple gets to deal with what someone else has done, and also deal with the complaints and possible bad press. Apple doesn’t claim that their products are user serviceable, unlike a car company.

Apple repairing its devices is good for everyone. Apple makes money on the repairs. The customer is happy. Dwight wears all the defective third party batteries as a jacket.

I’m not entirely sure if that’s the reason altogether, mainly when now that the $29 battery replacement program ended at the end of December in 2018, this seems like this was their next move planned all along from my point of view.

The problem is, when you have crappy OFFICIAL batteries like the ones used on the 6, 6s, etc... You might as well be using a cheap knock off, as that's probably where Apple outsourced their batts to begin with.

I don’t necessarily agree. Though I wouldn’t have a third party battery in the first place - I’d go to apple and they’d replace my battery, like they’ve done every time i’ve Asked them to.

It’s nice that they are now being even more generous.
 
By not servicing those devices, they were missing out on more revenue on out-of-warranty devices. Every dollar counts.

Correct. Declining revenue streams are the only guidance for the change in policy. It has nothing to do with customer service. We will continue to see similar policy changes as iPhone upgrade cycles extend out longer and longer. :apple:

Totally agree. This didn’t come out of goodwill from Apple. They were made aware of another potentially damaging lawsuit and they caved in.
I participate in every class-action lawsuit I’m invited to against any company out there for that very reason. We - the customer - win that way against companies greed!

First of all You should not need service.
Small companies are sometimes good or better, almost nobody knows.
Apple is good if You have apple care or warranty, else they are expensive and annoying control freaks, who want to decide if I get spare parts and make extensive tests on my property, which shouldn’t happen for a privacy propelling company.

Should sell parts to anyone who wants to buy, no questions asked

This policy makes sense. Even if that phone is resold, Apple is going to replace the battery anyway.

I once watched a family tantrum themselves into a warranty replacement of an iPhone with a third party HOME button. That never makes sense.
