apple selling apple branded LG displays is like google selling google branded HTC smartphones.

oh wait...

This could be non-problematic so long as Apple pushes other display manufacturers to make good products that support the Mac, and helps those companies understand that "good" for typical Mac purposes means good materials, good design, good connectivity, and a built-in camera for videoconferencing. If that happens, the absence of Apple involvement could even spur healthy competition and potentially more options.

Here's what I want: I don't care about 5k, but I do want a 27" display that looks great, connects easily, and has a built-in camera. Here's hoping we see that sort of thing.

LG Makes OLED displays, do you think this partnership might actually be mildly beneficial to Apple and the Laptop/iMac business?

15 inch MbP = 27" monitor (as the 21" is not capable of charging the 15" model)
no conventional USB? Forget using it to plug a keyboard and a mouse (of course you will buy the monitor to work but keep using the notebook's keys and trackpad), and then you'll buy a separate dock just because you need to plug older or conventional devices.

well done apple and lg. no compatibility for the sake of "innovation"

Apple hasn't released a new monitor in 5+ years and people are surprised or disappointed by this? Are you still using that crappy old 27" Apple display you paid +$1000 for years ago?

Come on, we all saw this coming and anyone with the need for a decent monitor upgraded to something else years ago.

You all would have complained non-stop about the prices anyways, gone on about how you can get this or that monitor for less, and ultimately you would have bought the cheaper monitor anyways. So why does this matter?

LG makes some great displays now. I know there was an initial ghosting issue or some kind of debacle with their displays on the early rMBP but it seems they've ironed it out. We have a 4K LG TV that is fantastic and the screen on my 2015 rMBP (LG) is awesome as well. All Apple would do anyway is use an LG panel, put some metal around it and up charge by 125% so I don't see how this is bad news?
I completely agree with this (I use LG TVs and monitors anyway) but I can't help but think the ones Apple are now pushing are some of the most gaudy displays I've ever seen. Both Apple and LG have much better designers than this.

Makes sense. Let display makers do what they do best... Make displays. And at a better price.

The 5K LG display (with collaboration from Apple) sounds pretty nice.
So, let computer makers do what they do best and smartphone makers do what they do best too?

Making a 5K display is NOT challenging if you make computers, smartphones and tablets.

It's writing on the wall.
There goes elegance for the Mac.

Enjoyed several Apple displays at home. Sad to see Apple killed that option when they obviously could have made money there.

This just in...
Apple is out of the Mac Pro business.

So what if they are? Get over it. I really don't understand. They made a Mac Pro and now they aren't continuing with it. It's not rocket science. Seriously, get a Windows PC if you're really bothered by it.

I think it's clear that Apple is no longer in the "pro computing" business at all.
Don't see how that is clear since they just released new pro laptops less than 24 hours ago. They never said they would release updated desktops for yesterday those are expected early next year when we will see new iMacs and potentially new Mac Pros

Not enough money in the standalone display business to be interesting for them.

Apple had two choices:
1. High margin + low volume = minor revenue
2. Low margin + high volume = minor revenue

Let the LGs of the world do battle in the race-to-the-bottom.

Please abstain from applying so much logic. The wonderful people of these forums do not appreciate that.

As they should be if they feel it's right. Evolution. Better them partner with someone else than make something subpar themselves because their hearts aren't in it anymore.
