I just recently purchased a LG 16:9 display (3440 x 1440 NON-curved 10 bit IPS) with thunderbolt 2 connectivity for my 2015 maxed out MacBook Pro 15".

It's probably the best display I have ever hooked up to a computer of any kind (pc or mac) and the thunderbolt connectivity (which acts as a hub for other devices) works flawless of course.

Sure the LG monitor stands aren't the best or whatever, but quality of the display image is more important than the look of the bezel or the stand and this display is gorgeous from an image quality perspective. I bet that 5k display is also. (i do video editing for a living).

TBH - I am actually glad that Apple is working with another manufacturer for monitors because maybe Apple can focus on making better computers and less on accessories now...

Is anybody else screaming internally 'WHAT THE HELL ARE APPLE DOING?!' They used to be a great company, and in just over 24 hours they have all but ruined everything they have stood for since the second Jobs era (2000-2011). Cook, you have failed.

They're going to where the big money is. Big money is not in personal computing.

and jack up the price on everything.

Real problem is Intel Processor roadmap. Mac needs to go on a yearly upgrade cycle tied to Apple's A series processors. Apple needs to cut the cord and get the Mac into the same marketing cycle as the iPhone.

Pretty soon Apple will be out of the Mac business altogether.

They'd have to open iOS development/app submission to other platforms. Considering iPads have Swift Playgrounds now, definitely heading towards that.

On a different note, does anyone know of any display makers that have a GPU built into the display? I've seen GPU enclosures, but no displays with built-in GPUs.

Not enough money in the standalone display business to be interesting for them.

Apple had two choices:
1. High margin + low volume = minor revenue
2. Low margin + high volume = minor revenue

Let the LGs of the world do battle in the race-to-the-bottom.
So you (Apple) should advertise the leader of the race to the bottom..? What kind of strategy is that?
Maybe Apple should license iOS to the worst making tablet maker from China. Take your pick: many tablet-manufactures over there standing in line....

Apple is starting to lose its high profile standard.

Sad to say, I've given up on Pro and Apple. When my Mac Pro dies which it eventually will, due to the next macOS update, no doubt, then I will move on.
They obviously have moved beyond their customers and their former core. Apple is a bank, it's a car manufacturer to be (WTF?), a music industry streaming service and an app store, all based on phones and tablets.
Well obviously they've got enough on their plate.
Other people, however, got to work too.

I never thought I'd say this, Microsoft has never looked better. At least I'm not putting any hopes of high quality and standards in them, so I can't be disappointed.

Very disappointing, I don't want some ugly plastic LG display (no matter how nice the panel) sitting on my desk amidst all of my much nicer Apple stuff. And hell, at $1300, it has the Apple tax to boot. The stand on that LG one has got to be the most uninspired design I've ever seen, it looks like some heavy iron thing that you'd find in your garage, like a bike work stand base or something.

Guess it's a good thing I've been hanging onto my 24" LED ACD all these years. I was happy to pay $900 for this. I wouldn't pay that much for LG anything.
Really, even LG OLED?

Anybody else remember years ago Apple telling a story about "oh, the other guys sell the monitors that we reject"

Now we can have reject monitors in the ugliest possible form factor. Ive signed off on this??? We can't have MagSafe or 32GB because it would make the MacWhatever 0.1mm thicker. But Sir Ive is good with the most hideous monitor ever produced? The real issue here is that Monitors are for desktop computers. And desktop computers are the enemy at Apple. Why make a monitor if you aren't going make computers?? And they aren't.

Steve Jobs wasn't motivated by profit margins.

I honestly don't see what he saw in Tim. Tim was a number cruncher with no creative foresight, and he's the exact same way as CEO.

Apple's Pro hardware and software weren't necessarily huge profit weilders for Apple, but they were important because it was the Creative Pros who motivated and pushed others into the Mac ecosystem.

Now that Apple has other people making pointless 99¢ apps, which make them billions, they think to hell with the Creatives who kept Apple in business through the '90s and '00s.

Steve also had a background in calligraphy along with his attention to detail and aesthetics.
I wasn't hoping for Tim to step down, but lately I'm beginning to think differently (pun intended).

Disappointing. I see the logic in partnering with a panel supplier, but what's the point in having the design team put so much effort into every tiny detail of a MacBook Pro and then partner it with what looks like the cheapest monitor you could find in the bargain corner of the local supermarket? It's lazy.

Don't see how that is clear since they just released new pro laptops less than 24 hours ago. They never said they would release updated desktops for yesterday those are expected early next year when we will see new iMacs and potentially new Mac Pros

Putting "Pro" in the name doesn't magically create a professional workstation. The word has no meaning in Apple's current product lineup.

I didn't see the original article mention this LG monitor. It also has USB-C, 4k and 27". Wouldn't this work for the new MBPs as well? http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27UD88-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor

I'm really starting to lose all faith in Apple... And I Wouldn’t be mad... If there were another brand like Apple… Same standards. Same quality... etc I could switch to... Sadly, there isn't. Me being p*ssed off is much more about there not being an alternative, then Apple ****ing things up. Because that was only a matter of time. It's called hubris + lack of vision and strong principles (Cook).

For all the naysayers, you realize these two LG monitors are probably using the same basic panel 4K & 5K that Apple already uses in the 21" and 27" retina iMacs (they come from LG). I would highly doubt you're getting a crap panel.

Tim Cook 1 year ago: We are dropping our desktop models!
Guy runs into Tim Cooks office a few days ago: Omg, did you see that ad for the Microsoft Surface Studio?
Tim Cook: **** me!

For me, the Surface Studio, and that ad for it, was very Apple-like. Why couldn't Apple have made that? Apple's really losing its edge.

So, let computer makers do what they do best and smartphone makers do what they do best too?

Making a 5K display is NOT challenging if you make computers, smartphones and tablets.

It's writing on the wall.
There goes elegance for the Mac.

Elegance? As a photographer I would just like an accurate an well-performing calibrateable display that integrates with the Mac. Seems the LG hits that.

If others would rather have a nice piece of "display art" in brushed aluminum, that's fine. I'm sure there's someone out their who will take your money and oblige.
