I love how this has turned into a MagSafe bitch fest when this article is about a limitation on the iPhone 12 Mini alone. If you actually read the support article it states that the Mini maxes out at 12W for ANY wireless charger. This is almost certainly due to the smaller form factor and heat concerns. This isn't some MagSafe deficiency.

as a lover of Apple an investor ill finally say it. Apple is full of hypocrites. The whole charging adapter thing is a lie. no one has 20w blocks in all over the place. Will the new Macs not come with power blocks because we all have 87w blocks stuffed in boxes in our basements? Apple doesn't give a crap about the environment. The new iPhones are designed to be throw away items. Yes throw away copper and aluminum and buy new one. all you geek fans should call apple out every chance you get. question them in person. apple is messing with us just like politicians. how far can we push it before the lemmings will push back. People we are talking about $1000 phones. you can buy a MacBook for that and keep it for years. we are getting jerked around. would you throw away your MacBook every 2 years?
I sort of agree with you, but why are you throwing away your phone after 2 years? I just finally upgraded my iPhone 6 (but only because I dropped it in the sink) after all these years. Yep, it's had a new battery put in it at some point, but that's it. And even if I did want to upgrade to each new version, I wouldn't be throwing the old one away, I'd hand it down to someone in the family, or sell it. iPhones last as long as MacBooks if you look after them.

I think the MagSafe charger uses USB C. I would be surprised if it was lightning especially since it requires a USB C power delivery charger. Even so Ive never heard of anyone personally bending the lightning connector, usually when people have lightning issues its the cable pulling out of the connector due to improper handling.

We can't go around saying the magsafe requires proper handing and therefore lower in value while also saying that the lighting cable has issues because they are being improperly handled.

MagSafe charger came today. Going to get the Mini. Tonight, I'll put my 11 on the MagSafe charger. I know it's going to charge super slow. I'm not in a hurry, since I only charge my phone while I sleep.
12w with a smaller battery (like the Mini) is probably equal to 15w with a larger battery, as far as charge time goes. But, MagSafe sure does have a lot of "fine print" involved. Time will tell whether it really matters, or not.

Which is why I'll be sticking with Lightning. What does it take, like a second more to plug in a Lighting cable versus attaching MagSafe? Plus it's cheaper and more widespread. Not worth the hassle.
Not even that if you have a lightning dock

But those seconds add up. And having a cable you have to wiggle every 2 minutes gets very annoying.

I’ll just keep using my anker 7.5w wireless pad at night. It’s not like I need it to be quick when I’m asleep, and just use a wired 18w to top up the battery from 30-75% real quick when I’m having a dinner.

Thank you for a great summary of my thoughts. Apple are one of the most hypocritical companies around. Whether its the environment, labor practices or caring for the USA. They suck. And they seem to be getting worse with every new product release.

The good thing about wireless charger is I can just put it on my bedside table to charge it when I get sleepy at night. But on daylight, I’d rather use a lightning port.

So you're saying millions of phones that require upwards of 50% more energy to charge is not materially bad for the environment?
Can you quantify this? Maybe it's not materially bad for the environment compared to all of the instant power on devices like computers, monitors, printers, always plugged in chargers, inefficient incandescent and florescent bubs, timers, throwaway and one-use plastics, wirelessly charging toothbrushes, mini-vacuum cleaners and the like, etc...and the list goes on and on and on. Have to pick and choose your battles in modern society and not focus on phones as the breaking point.

The above is a tempest in a teapot. Most consumer electronic devices have a limited shelf life that is dependent on the device. The reason, imo, that Apple designs their phones the way they do is for longevity. A mobile phone can take a lot of abuse and people would complain loudly if these phones couldn't take it. You want Apple should design plastic phones? At least aluminum and copper can be recycled and Apple does have a recycling program. A phone costs what a phone costs. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy an iphone. Samsung makes perfectly usable phones for cheap, that can make phone calls, texts and check facebook.

If you believe as such toward Apple, why do you invest? The money? Reminds me of the old joke..."the food here is bad, and such small portions."

Why are people so constipated and tribal about Magsafe? Are we forced to buy it? Can't people just use lightning or Qi instead if they prefer? As I see it, Magsafe just adds more choice to the selection of accessories available to us, which is good. There's something for everybody. Live and let live.

As for the iPhone Mini, it's probably good that it charges a tiny bit slower, it's a smaller battery, no need to kill it in a year.

oh well, it is a mini after all lol.

I guess the iphone mini can't handle that much wattage.

I wonder if because of the smaller battery in the mini if it’ll charge just as fast percentage wise as the larger phones?

20w brick and 2m usb C to lightning cable. Run it down to the red then plug it in for 30-45 mins and back to 65-70%. I don’t have to worry about charging this way.

The only wireless charging I ever use is in my Car - just to hold the current charge.
