The MagSafe duo was in an Engadget video. The reviewer picked up the phone...and it picks up the charger from the magnetic force.
"You're picking it up wrong." I'm only being a little sarcastic. It can't be that hard to pick up the phone and at the same time use your fingers to pry off the charger, right? But at $129 I'm not willing to try this myself, maybe at an Apple Store some day.

Oof. I’ve been a fan boy for nearly 2 decades and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a product that had such a universal scorn for pricing. I’ve admittedly overpaid for plenty of products in the past but even I was taken aback at $129

You're assuming even at 79 dollars the profit margin isn't already inflated. This thing is essentially a magsafe charger ($39) and an Apple Watch Charger ($29) with a couple extra circuits and some plastic which adds perhaps a dollar to the production cost. Given that those two products sell for a combined $68, pricing the Duo at $79 like most people expected would have provided a consistent Apple-esque profit margin. Tacking another 50 dollars on top of that, however, is ludacris even by Apple standards.
Not being able to get back to sleep after waking up at 5:45am on my day off, I spent the morning perusing other tech sites and the response has not been positive, especially from the non-Apple specific sites. This went from a must-have day one purchase to WTF Apple. The fact that a fully featured smart speaker is running for 30 dollars less than a charger is not being received well by anyone.
You have to wonder if that inflated profit margin is worth the negative backlash and what is quickly adding up to be a deathblow to any interest in the product at all at this point. You'd think Apple would have learned after the fiasco with the HomePod pricing, but clearly they haven't.
I agree with everything you said, but it will still sale, and sale well. Apple will probably drop the price at some point but it won't be for a year or so. I would love a third party alternative, I love the idea of this thing folding up. I travel with my family a lot, and 4 of these would be way more convenient that 8 watch charges and lightening chargers and 8 usb bricks, that's a lot of wires to keep from tangling up.

This guy has an interesting perspective on the new MagSafe Duo. One interesting fact at 1:50 is that he says that if you buy the single MagSafe charger and Apple's Charging dock for the watch, both of which like the Duo don't come with power bricks, the cost is exactly £129/$129 so he correctly says that you get one single unit for the same price as the two separate units.

I thought we would cut back on raw materials and plastic. But Apple doesn't think green either. They are the co-causers.

The MagSafe charger is $39 and the Apple Watch dock is $79. That's $118 so it's close but not exact. That said, the Apple Watch dock is also overpriced when compared to the charging puck that is $29. While it may be a somewhat fair comparison, I believe it still to be overpriced given the current inflated price of the watch dock.

Not a word in the product page about how many watts it delivers. Bad sign. Since the puck requires a 20W charger to output 15W, it’s natural to think that the Duo maybe can output 15W charging only the iPhone, but this value would drop significantly if charging a Watch also. Even more un-exciting.

Maybe it could output more with a 30W charger, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. For my use case, if this thing was cheap enough, I can forgo 15W wireless charging. I would relegate it to a bedside charger at home or on the road so high wattage charging is not a requirement.

The MagSafe duo was in an Engadget video. The reviewer picked up the phone...and it picks up the charger from the magnetic force. For $148 all in (Buying a dedicated $20 20w plug, as it is not included.) This thing is highway robbery by apple, with a crappy design to boot.

I was actually excited for this because I want a simple charger to magnetically snap in (with a light force) but still allow you to pick the thing up without slinging the charger all over the place.
Well some people are complaining about the magnets being too weak. Now others are saying it’s too strong. Geez.

I guess a solution can be making the MagSafe duo heavier. And throw a brick in while they’re at it lol

Apple is shooting themselves in the foot with these insane prices for Magsafe accessories and they aren't even that great to begin with, but not even including wall charger is even more ridiculous.

Beyond ridiculous price (for either!). So I can buy a Magsafe Charger for $39 and a watch charger for $29 or both in a plasticy package together as $129? Is this some joke? This isn't even an integrated product. It's literally both seperate chargers with a lighting (???) port. Just look at the thing! $61 to basically hold those two seperate chargers together and that's about it.
Why would I buy this?
I get what you are saying but the apple watch magnetic charging dock is not $29. that's more comparable I think.

same difference as that ridiculous watch dock is just the watch charging puck on a cheap pad and is just as much a rip off as this new one. Seriously, a HomePod mini is cheaper than this charger pad and it comes with a power cord.

Saw the duo charger, wanted it straight away, perfect for me, thought nothing Apple can do to make me not get it

Well at that price with no plug, well done apple you somehow managed to do it

£130 a piece in the UK. $170 USD

One small step for Apple. One giant leap for their customers. $170 for a leather sleeve. LMAO.
