It’s just a reference for what the case will look like after repeated use with a MagSafe charger. They explain it in the product info. Very interesting that they’re showing the wear on a product though. I don’t recall them every forewarning customers.

They warned that the Jet Black iPhone 7 would easily get swirl scratches.

Oh wow. That’s idiotic. You’d figure it had enough weight to stay down on a table. Why would anyone want a product like that!?

For travel.

The problem is these same people have no issue spending money on an Apple product or other things but for some reason they expect Apple to always keep the barrier to entry low while not holding other companies to the same rubric. If you can buy a Tesla or a cup of Coffee from Starbucks you have no reason to kvetch at the price of the charger.

It's all relative, I just pre-ordered an iPone 12 pro Max this morning and paid $1,199 without batting an eye... I also bought a tesla model X last month and spent close to 100K. but those items are worth the price of admission to me and relative to similar items on the market..... it's not that I am not willing to pay a premium for certain items..... it's that certain items are just blatantly overpriced... Apple is certainly not the only one guilty of this, a lot of companies do it. regardless of your socioeconomic standing sometimes its all about the principal... Thats why some people will spend a bunch of money on item A but will balk at buying item B no matter how minuscule the cost is in comparison.

Not sure why people are so upset about the price, most wireless charging hubs from 3rd party manufacturers are priced about the same or even higher. Also without the actual charger. Here's just one of many examples.

Also, don't like it? Don't buy it. I'll probably get me one.

I would really like the MagSafe Duo, if not for anything else but to have a clean charging setup (as trivial as that might sound).

If it requires 20W USB-C charger and that has to be purchased separately, then damn. I might wait and watch for that Belkin MagSafe charging stand.
It does not require it, it just loads faster in combination.

I think of it this way, with the duo being connected by lightning my husband and I only have to bring the duo, one cable, and one brick with us when traveling. I have the iPhone 12 pro with MagSafe, so I can use the duo, but my husband has an 11 and can’t use the duo. So when his phone needs a charge he can just unhook from the duo and plug into his phone.

Now I know that’s typically not how everyone thinks. Fairly sure 99.9% of anyone traveling brings their own cable and brick. But it could be a reason why they went with lightning

As of right now.. Apple is in awkward position with their cables and chargers. Imagine your husband also bring along an iPad Pro? That's another USB-C to USB-C cable.. Along with Lightning for iPhone, and charging puck for the Watch.

One company, three products, three different ports.

This is crazy. That’s being nice here.
The wallet doesn’t even stay on in/out of a pocket. It’s an ill conceived product and probably won’t sell much. People want the charger but it’s ridiculously over priced.

Oh you’re right I didn’t even think about that!

MagSafe also makes matters even worse. iPhone 12 can use it at full 15watts speed, older iPhones charge much more slowly.. That's like another custom charger for specific iPhone. So it's like three and a half different chargers.

Never thought I'd say this, but at this point Apple products are terribly fragmented
😵

The leather sleeve at $129 is absolutely ridiculous. However, one thing that still has it been answered by anyone is, does that clocks they always on? They made it sound that way in the keynote, so does the iPhone 12 technically have an always on display, but you just need this leather sleeve to get it to work?
As for the MagSafe Duo, i’m not one bit surprised by that pricing. The Apple Watch stand cost $79, and all it is is a regular Apple Watch puck with some material around it to help it stand up. The regular Apple Watch puck is $29, I highly doubt that it costs an additional $49 just to add the stand.
Add $39 to $79, plus an extra $20 for Tim’s troubles, and you end up at $129.
I still plan to eventually get one, probably when it’s on sale on Amazon or Best Buy, because I like how small it is. I feel like I could fold it up, and slide it right in my pocket.
But here’s an interesting question. The 20 W adapter charges the regular MagSafe at 15 W. You absolutely need the 20 W adapter to get the full 15 W. So, with this, does the 20 W adapter also let the magsafe portion of the duo go all the way up to 15 W, at the same time that the watch is charging? Or does it slow the magsafe portion down while charging both phone and watch?
Also, I know why it’s lightning, but I so wish it was USB-C. That way I could just bring one 20 W adapter, one USB-C cable, and the duo. That would charge my iPhone, my watch, my AirPods, and my iPad Pro. but unfortunately, even though I can only bring one adapter now, I still have to bring two separate cables.
Sad reacts only.
Also, for anyone asking, airpower was rumored to be priced at $249, and would probably require something bigger than 20 W to work properly. And I highly doubt that the adapter would’ve been included in the box. So, either way it would’ve been way more expensive.
Airpower at $249, plus a 30 to 35 W adapter for another 30 bucks.

80 bucks isn’t “free,” but would have been a realistic and palatable price point.
But since you like numbers and money, let’s do a quick math problem together shall we?
What’s more: 129 x 50 or 79 x 100?

Pricing matters.
But when you consider Apple only Makes money off the profit margins, say it cost Apple 69 to make one of these (which is probably wrong, it’s much cheaper) then you would do the math as so: (129 - 69) x 50 or (79 - 69) x 100. And with that math Apple makes much more selling less at higher margins.

Beyond ridiculous price (for either!). So I can buy a Magsafe Charger for $39 and a watch charger for $29 or both in a plasticy package together as $129? Is this some joke? This isn't even an integrated product. It's literally both seperate chargers with a lighting (???) port. Just look at the thing! $61 to basically hold those two seperate chargers together and that's about it.
Why would I buy this?

The only advantage is it's one piece. It requires one power source and easy for travel. I wonder how long it takes for the two sides to start to rip apart.

All of those in your picture comes with the charger. I have the Nomad Wireless Charging Base Apple Watch Edition myself and it's really nice. Rather expensive, no denying that but the MagSafe Charger is even more expensive, don't have any of the higher quality materials and can only charge two devices while the Nomad one can charge three devices + my apple watch and it even features outputs so you can charge using cables as well if you like.

It's in the very last photo in the slide. In Germany too so I guess it's in every store. Weird that only one photo show's it that visible. I really hope it's not that way.
You think it’s weird that only one photo shows how visible the imprint of the MagSafe charger might be?

Why would they show multiple photos of the case with a MagSafe charger imprint on it? I doubt most people will even use MagSafe.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding. I just think people are getting a little too emotional about this. It might leave a mark, they’re letting us know, decide accordingly. This is not a scandal.

You're assuming even at 79 dollars the profit margin isn't already inflated. This thing is essentially a magsafe charger ($39) and an Apple Watch Charger ($29) with a couple extra circuits and some plastic which adds perhaps a dollar to the production cost. Given that those two products sell for a combined $68, pricing the Duo at $79 like most people expected would have provided a consistent Apple-esque profit margin. Tacking another 50 dollars on top of that, however, is ludacris even by Apple standards.
Not being able to get back to sleep after waking up at 5:45am on my day off, I spent the morning perusing other tech sites and the response has not been positive, especially from the non-Apple specific sites. This went from a must-have day one purchase to WTF Apple. The fact that a fully featured smart speaker is running for 30 dollars less than a charger is not being received well by anyone.
You have to wonder if that inflated profit margin is worth the negative backlash and what is quickly adding up to be a deathblow to any interest in the product at all at this point. You'd think Apple would have learned after the fiasco with the HomePod pricing, but clearly they haven't.

I was really excited for this. I thought of buying 20W charger + MagSafe Duo as it would have be ultimate solution to charge my 4 devices. I just have to carry 20W charger, MagSafe Duo & 2 Wires.

1. Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max, AirPods Pro & Apple Watch Series 4.
2. iPad Pro with 20W charger.

Usually I carry 3 Adaptors and 3 Wires.
One Adaptor for iPhone, One Adaptor for Apple Watch & One Adaptor for my iPad Pro. I can use the iPhone Adaptor for my Apple Watch but during holidays, my wife also uses my charger so extra adaptor is always handy.

MagSafe Duo could have made things much simple as it charges iPhone + Apple Watch at the same time. AirPods Pro have brilliant battery life so it's not necessary to charge all the time. I can even use AirPods Pro while the case is charging after I'm done charging iPhones. The best part? it folds and you can carry it easily, even in your pocket.

I was cursing Belkin for it's USD149.00 MagSafe 3in1 Wireless Charger
Screenshot 2020-11-06 at 11.43.14 PM.png

This USD149.00 charging stand is not handy at all, I cannot even carry while I'm travelling. It's just good for the desk charging station. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful but the price just doesn't justify as much as MagSafe Duo does. Both are bloody expensive. Mind you, even Belkin at USD149.00 does not come with adaptor.

I'm sick and tired of carrying wires and adaptors and if I carry my MacBook Pro along, it's the 5th device along, not to forget my wife's iPhone too as 6th device. Charging so many devices with wires tangling around is just not fun. This was one reason I was very excited about MagSafe thinking there will be better alternatives now to charge devices wirelessly and quick.

I usually don't mind spending extra few bucks on Apple Accessories but this trend of expensive Wireless Chargers is either normal due to quality and performance or I am misinformed about good wireless chargers. Because I do know that cheap Qi wireless chargers are slow (7.5W) and they heat the smartphones. This overall experience and comfort is an expensive affair. My mind & heart just tells my to stick with the brick 20W adaptor, quickly charge and move on.

I don't only blame Apple but even other manufacturers.

Take a look at Morphie 3in1 Wireless Charging Pad
Screenshot 2020-11-06 at 11.54.59 PM.png

Morphoe 3in1 Wireless charging pad is just 7.5W charging speed and it cost USD 97.95. That's just ridiculous.

Coming to conclusion, I think Apple has managed to still price less than Belkin's 3-1 MagSafe wireless charger which is not even portable and handy while also Morphie charging almost USD 100 for 7.5W speed, it just sits in the middle and compared to both of them, it's value for money.

Now, there are many wireless chargers which cost less but I don't know how they perform, their reliability, does it heat the smartphone or not, I have no idea but I've understood one thing, good branded wireless chargers are freaking costly and I would love to know WHY?

I think I'll go for MagSafe Duo but with a heavy heart thinking I've just overspent for the luxury in life.

130 bucks WITHOUT the charging plug?
Oh bugger right off, Apple. Sorry but no. That’s just ridiculous.
I have to agree with this. I was looking forward to using this as a bedside charger that I could just fold up to take on the road. But this is a ridiculous price. I might have been willing to pay $80 and that's a stretch.
