According to The New York Times, Apple's statement suggests that only a few thousand users may be experiencing battery life issues out of several million.

To the MR forum, this translates to "everybody".

Serial Numbers

Would have been nice to publish the serial number ranges....

Ranges are not needed since the serial number is tied to apple id and apple is reaching out. I think the effected people probably have already been contacted. :apple:

I have seen the overly long charging times and the battery doesn't last the 10 hrs either.

Hopefully apple get it sorted soon

Whilst I have issues with Apple sales (some of which are not Apple's fault), I cannot fault their after sales.

Hopefully Apple will be able to contact those affected as I'm sure they'll be some people who won't be aware they have a faulty product.

It is not fixable with a software update. If you want it sorted take it to an Apple Store for a replacement.

It may take 6 months to get your replacement, but hey, gotta do what ya gotta do.

Even if a million devices are effected by the manufacturing issue, it would still be a "small number" compared to how many they've sold so far.

My 5s charges super fast, but just doesn't last.

Jobs was a bit bullheaded... this new "bring it in and we'll give you a new one" deal is pretty sweet, though. Not really any other phone manufacturer that can offer that.

If you hate MR so much, why do you drop by?

Apple is not required to replace a defective product unless it is under warranty. Which these are and that is by their choice, not some government nanny state.

The Sale of Goods Act only applies in Australia, mate.

Oh, it's "only" a few thousand users...

Correct. Out of the 9 MILLION that sold that first weekend, and then likely another several million since, so let's be conservative and say.... 12 million phones sold, and let's be mean and say a few thousand is.... 10 thousand. That's a failure rate of 0.0833%. Is YOUR work as accurate?

No, they have to replace them under law. Even if it wasn't under law, they would still run the cost/benefit scenarios. Only on MR do people think that every little thing that Apple does is from the kindness of their hearts.

How big is that stick up there? They could make it much harder than this, and many companies do.

And what's your excuse for the poor battery life in the iPhone 5? 4-5 hours of average use before a recharge is NOT normal. It was NOT like this with 6.1.4.

Concur with this. What's funny is there is NO fix and not many are complaining about it even though it's affecting a lot of people I know with the 5. Another example of Apple trying to kill older hardware so people upgrade. Not happy.

Have you tried setting the phone up as new instead of restoring from a backup? If your current iOS 7 came from an image of iOS 6, it's likely software gunk. If you have a clean new OS image then I'm with you

do people really get around 10 hours of usage? I average around 5hrs 30 mins. Am I one of the unlucky ones?

The battery life on the iPhones I've owned (5 and 5s) has been far better then the competitors phones I've used. I have 3 hours and 20 min of use, 14 hours of standby and 55% on my 5s. I installed a couple big games tonight I would generally have 70%+ on any given night.

We had a mistake, here is a complete and free replacement.

Just how it should be.

Good on Apple.

IF Microsoft/Google makes the same mistake: "THIS is why Apple products cost more. Quality, you know? MS/GG only makes crappy products!"

:p:D

I agree that Apple response is what it should be (no need to praise when someone does the thing it is supossed to do).

Don't worry, after the battery runs out in a blink, they can always enjoy themselves by staring at the iPhone 5s and be delighted by its infinite beauty. After 1 hour they will start hearing Jony's voice in their heads: "aluminium.... simplicity... innovative..." :p

Serously, I hope everybody gets the fully functional iPhone they paid for. Even if a company gives you a new product it is always an annoyance to go to the store or send/receive mail packages. Sadly, there is not such a thing as a 100% perfect manufacturing process.
