I’m not sure what you’re talking about. The rumors of the keyboard incompatibility came out after the product was announced. Anyway it seems Apple is on the record now either because of the complaints or to protect themselves from liability if someone uses the old keyboard and it damages the new iPad.

Had this been any other company such as Microsoft nobody would be making a deal about it.

so let me understand this, Apple declined to comment on his question, so the writer makes an assumption and reports it as news…. Pretty sure that’s not how news works.

I don't get it. First this guy says, Apple claimed that the old keyboard isn't compatible with the new iPad and now he says Apple refused to go on the record about this topic?

I think it says a lot more about the critics here when they automatically assume the worst of Apple, and for hopping on the bandwagon.

So many forum members losing their collective minds just because the old keyboard *might* not fit the new iPad. All sorts of names being hurled around. That sounds like the worst case of concern trolling if I ever saw one.

Apple shouldn’t need to clarify anything.
On the day the new iPad Pros were announced the original MK was removed from Apple’s website. The new keyboard listed compatibility with previous generations of iPad. Then a rumor comes out stating the new 12.9” iPad wouldn’t be compatible with the old MK. Both The Verge and Apple Insider ran stories claiming they had sources who confirmed the rumor. To suggest Apple had nothing to clarify is ridiculous.

These two stories were written by different Verge writers.

In all fairness Apple only released the Magic Keyboard one year ago. They would of known the dimensions for the new iPad then. So they should of accommodated for the upcoming change.
The issue isn’t the new iPad it’s the old keyboard. Apple advertises the new keyboard as working with old iPads so the question is why wasn’t this years keyboard released last year?

You want the company to give you a brand new case in return for your used case? Why would you buy a case expecting it to work perfectly with future products that you buy?

It's nice that it "works" but it is sad that a $350 keyboard is not fully forward compatible. The pricing for these is astronomical - you could buy an Apple wireless keyboard and trackpad and still come out cheaper than a passive iPad case. Must be an incredibly expensive hinge because the case material is trash and collects every smudge of whatever surface you put the thing on.

from Apple: "Due to the slightly thicker dimensions of this new iPad Pro, it's possible that the Magic Keyboard may not precisely fit when closed, especially when screen protectors are applied."

That is very odd wording: "it's possible that the Magic Keyboard may not precisely fit...". They have access to the old Magic Keyboard. Have they not tested to see how the new iPad Pro 12" fits with the old Magic Keyboard? Why the word "may"? It either does or doesn't fit well.

Are they trying to say something like this:
1. The old Magic Keyboard fits fine with the new iPad Pro 12" as long as you do not add stickers or screen protectors on its surface.
2. The old Magic keyboard does not fit well if the surface of the new iPad Pro 12" is adulterated.

*shrug*

Tolerances. Obviously the iPad has tight tolerances, but if you're on the "tight" end of the Magic Keyboard tolerance limits, it could be an issue.

Always felt this was a bit of a tempest in a teapot that was being fueled by all the tech pundits.

Difference is, there was absolutely nothing official in the original report, but that didn't stop people to jump on the "Apple-sucks-bandwagon". 🤷‍♂️
Are you new around here? Is that the first time you saw people get heated over a rumor?

I’m actually surprised Apple even said anything about this, not that another user would have figured it out eventually, but obviously they want to maximize their sales on the newest product, but then again, transparency I think it’s really important moving forward with a company like Apple.

But what about all those who were up in arms when it was assumed that it wouldn't be compatible? What about their outrage? And what about all those that don't even own one and still felt the need to fill the forum with complaints?

That was apple that made the statement that they weren't compatible. They are now saying they are compatible but you can't close it properly. No one was making it up.

Where did Apple say it wasn’t compatible? I’ve seen posts showing screen shots of chats with Apple support saying it would work, posted in another thread.

I’ve also seen posts CLAIMING Apple said it was not compatible, but none of them quoted what was said or said who at Apple actually said it.

The new 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro is 0.5mm thicker than the previous-generation version, which has led to fears that it won't be compatible with the older Magic Keyboard. Apple is offering a new Magic Keyboard that offers a perfect fit, but Apple says you can still use your existing 2020 Magic Keyboard with a 2021 iPad Pro.

In a Magic Keyboard support document, Apple says the first-generation Magic Keyboard is "functionally compatible" with the fifth-generation iPad Pro, but due to the thickness of the tablet, it's "possible" the keyboard won't precisely fit when closed.Apple says that the fit issue will be exacerbated if a screen protector is put on the iPad Pro, but it sounds like iPad Pro owners who have a Magic Keyboard already and don't want to shell out another $349 for an updated version can continue to use their existing keyboards.

We'll find out more about how the older Magic Keyboard fits the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro when the iPad Pros are released or when reviews come out. Note that this issue only impacts the 12.9-inch model as the 11-inch iPad Pro is the same size and is fully compatible with the original Magic Keyboard.

For those who are concerned about the slight fit issue, Apple has a new version of the Magic Keyboard available for the 2021 iPad Pro, which comes in white for the first time in addition to black.

(Thanks, Chris!)

All I can say is why somebody who just bought an iPad Pro last year, when to replace it with the new one? I'm one of them, and really do see any urgency doing so. I expect my 2019 iPad Pro 12.9 to last at least another 2-3 years, with its case/keyboard.

Apple should offer a 1 for 1 trade in. Disappointed with this news. Money grab Apple. Use some of your profits and personal bonus‘s to help. So bad.
What is this absolute nonsense? lol

A bot gone bad?

Someone who didn't read the article?

Sarcasm?
