It seems you're confusing what the term Privacy Policy is. The fact that you're using those words just because Apple wasn't candid enough about the the iOS battery issue just shows that you have no idea what you're talking about.

my post was an observation, not a complaint.

if you completely failed to understand the difference, i can't really help you there.
EVERYONE’S post is an observation. 🤪😆🤣
Your “observation“ is no different than anyone else’s. You were expressing dissatisfaction about something. 🙄
A literal complaint…about complaints. 🤪

To everyone griping "OMG they should have told us sooner!!!": Stop. Lets think about this for just a few seconds. What do we know about the new iPad Pros? We know that both models are identical except for their physical size and their display. What do we also know? We know that the 11" model is physically identical to the previous 11" model, and is fully compatible with existing Magic Keyboards. If you can't extrapolate from all of this that the new 12.9" model will still function with the old Magic Keyboard but just not fit properly, that's your own fault.

The new 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro is 0.5mm thicker than the previous-generation version, which has led to fears that it won't be compatible with the older Magic Keyboard. Apple is offering a new Magic Keyboard that offers a perfect fit, but Apple says you can still use your existing 2020 Magic Keyboard with a 2021 iPad Pro.

2021-Magic-Keyboard-Older-iPad.jpg

In a Magic Keyboard support document, Apple says the first-generation Magic Keyboard is "functionally compatible" with the fifth-generation iPad Pro, but due to the thickness of the tablet, it's "possible" the keyboard won't precisely fit when closed.Apple says that the fit issue will be exacerbated if a screen protector is put on the iPad Pro, but it sounds like iPad Pro owners who have a Magic Keyboard already and don't want to shell out another $349 for an updated version can continue to use their existing keyboards.

We'll find out more about how the older Magic Keyboard fits the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro when the iPad Pros are released or when reviews come out. Note that this issue only impacts the 12.9-inch model as the 11-inch iPad Pro is the same size and is fully compatible with the original Magic Keyboard.

For those who are concerned about the slight fit issue, Apple has a new version of the Magic Keyboard available for the 2021 iPad Pro, which comes in white for the first time in addition to black.

(Thanks, Chris!)

I’m glad I took the gamble and grabbed the current 12.9” magic keyboard new for £239 then… I had a feeling it’d work, for the sake of 0.5mm. Phew! 😂

again, you have no idea what a complaint is.

my observation: "there was no way for apple to predict this" is my pre-emptive response to anything that "the people with pitchforks..." were going to type in the comments.

no where did I express any dissatisfaction.

yep, sounds like you failed again at understanding what a complaint is. nice try, but I think we're done here. have a good one. 👋

I'm entitled to nothing, yet Apple obviously pays money to take a perfectly working old iPad and pay me money towards buying a new one. Do the same for the keyboard is no difference.

Sure, it’s no difference because it’s not your money. That’s the definition of entitled.

Here’s a bold and radical idea to consider if you’re already using the $349 keyboard with your iPad Pro 3rd or 4th gen:

How about sitting this iPad Pro upgrade cycle out? I mean, would it absolutely kill you to not have the latest camera (because you’re such a professional photographer on your iPad vs your iPhone)? Are you hooked enough to say that you’re willing to have your iPad Pro fit ‘imperfectly’ in your $350 keyboard case, or are you sick enough to even go so far as to buy a new $350 case too? I don’t care if you’re Warren Buffet, wasted money is wasted money.

In case you haven’t guessed it, no, I ain’t giving in this year. I’m in protest of the ridiculous lack of innovation and I’m honestly disappointed that Apple is playing it so safely. Steve Jobs would’ve evolved so far beyond the iPad Pro by now that it’s an embarrassment to call this organization Apple.

I speculate that the thickness is not the most important concern of Apple but the balance of the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" on the old Magic Keyboard. It will be 40g heavier than the 2020 model and it may toggle on the old Keyboard. The old model plus keyboard combo was already too heavy for me as I did not plan to use it as a laptop replacement (it weighted like a MacBook Pro 13"). The weight issue is not to be overloooked and I will hold off before I can try on the real things. (It seems natural that the new keyboard will be even heavier for balance purpose).

So…you were looking forward to observations from ”the people with pitchforks”? I don’t think you understand your own words. They don’t literally have pitchforks. So, why would you say that? Are you saying they are farmers?
No. They are only people. Making their own observations. You were using it as a negative connotation.
Now, you are trying to fabricate a reality where words mean whatever you want.

If this were an isolated incident you might be right but it isn't. There are some quite disgusting planned obsolescence schemes Apple has pulled in the past.

The problem is the more egregious it gets, the more a brand and trust gets eroded. Brand trust is important, it's a large part of the relationship between Apple and its users.

Imagine if potentially each iPad model requires you to buy a new $300 keyboard each time? That's why you see vocal frustrations from users, because it's expected that Apple could pull this sort of thing.

It’s kinda the whole risk you run when you buy a product that’s designed to work really well with that one product. The best example is the iphone battery case, which is almost assured to not not work with the next generation of iphone. And yet people still buy it.

I don’t see it as forced obsolescence. I mean, how would this have been any different had the iPad Pro received a new form factor, or made a little longer or wider to not fit the Smart Keyboard at all.

Apple sells you an integrated experience with your ipad. Nothing more, and nothing less. You are paying for the design process that went into conceptualising the magic keyboard, and there will never be another product by another company quite like it.

I don’t think Apple deliberately goes out of their way to break backwards compatibility with newer products but at the same time, you can’t expect Apple to constrain themselves in such a manner either. Either the new iPad Pro is thicker to accommodate the new display, or it’s made thinner to factor in the thicker display, possibly at the expense of battery life. They made a decision which probably inconveniences a small number of users who are using the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro with the new magic keyboard and are ripe for an upgrade, but will nevertheless remain the best choice for people new to the 2018 iPad Pro form factor, or new to iPads altogether.

Why wasn’t last year’s magic keyboard made a little looser to fit the thicker form factor as well? Maybe this would mean it not fitting the current ipad as well? We will have to wait for the new keyboard to be released before we see how much disparity there is.

The next factor (I am guessing) is that Apple knows the upgrade cycle of their iPads and believes many people will be holding on to their iPad Pro’s for 4-5 years.

A product like the magic / Smart Keyboard was always living on borrowed time. The alternative is to stick with an external wireless keyboard and mouse / trackpad if you want to be able to port your accessories over when you upgrade.

At the end of the day, it is what it is.

Another thread on here someone measured .5mm of paper and stick it in his keyboard/iPad. Many were ahead of the company this time.
I saw that thread. If Apple hadn’t relinquished that the keyboard could be used, MacRumors still would’ve reported an article that other users were using previous keyboards that were compatible. I still think it’s a better notion that Apple came forward being open about this.

All I can say is why somebody who just bought an iPad Pro last year, when to replace it with the new one? I'm one of them, and really do see any urgency doing so. I expect my 2019 iPad Pro 12.9 to last at least another 2-3 years, with its case/keyboard.

This is talking about the keyboard not the iPad. The magic keyboard only came out a year ago. I bought it for my 2018 iPad Pro so I’m close enough to 2-3 years and looking to upgrade but the keyboard is much newer

Difference is, there was absolutely nothing official in the original report, but that didn't stop people to jump on the "Apple-sucks-bandwagon". 🤷‍♂️

No, that's not the difference at all, that's justification. I am not saying you didn't have a reason for doing it, I was suggesting that if you ignore them instead it isn't feeding the beast. Especially since you few were the first to bring the negativity to the thread.

You're just as bad, you are doing the same thing. Two sides of the same coin. Either be productive or you are just making noise. If you truly want those people to stop, just ignore it. It's one thing to respond to someone's comments directly its another thing to invite the drama. Please stop <big heart emoji here>

See how that works?

If you are just trolling me and my response feeds your excitement, you win. If you genuinely didn't understand, then I hope this clears things up for you.

I think you missed the point of my post :) These few people were bringing the negativity and being non-productive to the thread. I was sharing a perspective to see if maybe I could change the future outcome of discussions on the board. So I wasn't "just as bad" (using my/your words) as they had already brought the negativity, which was the entire point. Those "complainers" they were referencing hadn't posted, thereby making these people the complainers. Me pointing it out and offering a solution make me no where close to the "same coin"

So while I can see what you were trying to do there, and it was maybe a funny thing to do and made me chuckle, it doesn't work that way

I respectfully disagree. A product should last longer than 2 years, especially when it is an Apple hardware designed component, which they should be building design upgrades considering. If it were a third part? Maybe. But they have no excuses.

Also, ask Jony Ives why he quit a few years back.

What makes the old Magic Keyboard not last even if it wouldn’t work with the 2021 version? The keyboard was for previous generations of iPads and will most likely last a long time together with those. I’d rather they design the products to be as good as possible with the current generation things rather then make sure that even the worst case scenario tolerance wise fits with a future generation.

I am sure they have planned to change the size or shape of the camera bump at some point in the future, should they make the hole for the keyboard bigger right now to make sure it fits the future one? So it looks bad with the current generation instead?

Overall this is a clever move by apple, they would have known last year that this years 12.9” iPad wouldn’t have fit perfectly in last years keyboard case, should they have made the keyboard case to fit an upcoming device…. Maybe yes, maybe no.

Yes because they knew what was coming and it is a bit shady on apples part to do this, BUT…

No because last years magic keyboard was made for the 2020 iPad (an iPad that they don’t expect a huge amount of people to upgrade to this years model), and was also compatible with the 2018 iPad Pro… but officially it was made for the 2020 Pro with the camera cut out…

It is disappointing that last years magic keyboard isn’t forward compatible (perfectly), but to be fair most people won’t have an issue but those with a tighter Magic Keyboard within tolerance might have issues, which sucks but it is what it is.

Overall though it’s a great business decision by Apple, ethically though maybe not… especially with the constant environmental speeches we get every year.

Talking of environmental and off subject, anyone else notice they include a standard USB to lightning cable with their new Apple TV…. Surely this should have been USB-C to lightning right?

Easy then, sell your old keyboard with your old iPad Pro, get all new stuff. Or if you feel that the keyboard/ipad fit is good enough, keep the keyboard anyway even though it's not the latest generation.

I don't get the environmental angle in this case. Not sure about you guys, but I _never_ throw away my old Apple stuff. You can always get at least some money for it. And in this case, the keyboard would actually work with the next gen iPad, so even less of an issue there.

But obviously many people do, why else would charge bricks be removed from boxes etc…

The point I am making is that making products only compatible with the current generation models when a marginal 0.5mm increase in thickness will stop it working will prematurely make that product defunct and ending up in landfill.

Much the same as it was touted the charge brick was removed as many go unused and in landfill, where they would rather people re-use old charge bricks…

Then release an iPhone with a USB-C cable knowing many upgrades will have a standard USB charge brick (other than the previous years iPhone users), forcing those customers to purchase a new USB-C charge brick (as they would likely sell their old charge brick with their old phone)… then later release a brand new product (Apple TV) with a charge cable which won’t be compatible with their newly purchased charge brick forcing them to go and get ANOTHER charge brick which they previously sold with their old iPhone seems a bit counter intuitive to me.
