Apple retail stores will be closed until further notice, according to a new banner posted on Apple's website (via 9to5Mac).

Apple on Friday shut down all of its retail stores outside of greater China for a two week period in an effort to cut down on the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the United States and other countries.

Following the store closures, Apple published a FAQ on its website answering key questions customers might have about repairs and returns. As of writing, the FAQ still says that Apple stores will be closed outside of Greater China through March 27, suggesting Apple has yet to update the page to reflect the change.

Notably, the banner currently only appears on Apple's U.S. website, so whether or not the indefinite closures apply to all retail stores outside of China is unclear.

As part of its measures to limit the spread of coronavirus, the U.S. administration on Monday advised the public to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people, so it's possible that Apple's decision to close stores "until further notice" is a response to that guidance.

Apple plans to continue to pay its hourly workers during the store closures and has expanded leave policies to accommodate personal or family health circumstances created by COVID-19, including recovering from an illness, caring for a sick loved one, mandatory quarantining, or childcare challenges.

My country is about to knock South Korea off the 4th place and no end in sight ... this truly is an event for the history books. I am mostly scared about the long term economics tbh

Ok we get it media. Everything’s now closed. Imagine the pent up demand explosion for “stuff” in a month or two when this fear nonsense is gone. People will be “relief buying” everything especially apple products. Apple products are what you need most during those wonderful social distancing times

We feel very sorry for you your AAPL stock is down but there are people in actual lockdown and need to look after their elderly as well. It's very understandable they're nervous.

So you think this shouldn’t have been mentioned, at all, because why? I’m pretty sure there are people who would like to know their schedule may be shifted again.

Of course, I remember when the thing you got after an event like this was a sudden spike in births. I guess we just knew how to have more fun. Now, seems kind of pathetic.

Lol! Darkest hour? Why because some stores are closed and some people have a cold? Darkest hour....tell that to a mother who lost her child to cancer...yes the millions who die from cancer not some minor flu virus. What media created complete and utter yes utter nonsense this all is.
Maybe because cancer is not contagious.

You really think governments and businesses would shut down for nothing? You don’t think this is a very calculated move based on data?

If so I have a bridge to sell you.

Yes they are nervous because this media fear will not let spouses, relatives see them in hospitals, rehabs and nursing homes!! Many more Elderly will die from the isolation rather than this ridiculous virus fear garbage. Don’t u question anything? Stop blindly following those in charge who like everyone else have their own interests and agendas...

Why because the media told u this?? What about the other dozens of other viruses that we have dealt with in just the past decade alone? This fear is causing more damage than any virus could

my grandfather is in rehab and my grsndmother who has been with him 71 years cannot see him in rehab. He picks up the phone sometimes when we call. We don’t know what’s going on. He needs his beloved wife with him! I see wives/husbands banging on the windows letting them know they are here. Many, I pray not my grandfather will not make it and just give up. This madness needs to stop!

Apple stock? You’re kidding right my Apple stock will be just fine when this thing blows over. It’s seeing what fear does. It’s just like a twilight zone episode and it’s disturbing but mostly just sad

Some extreme positions on this coronavirus business. Depending on who you listen to it's either a common cold or a zombie apocalypse. Inevitably, the truth will be somewhere in the middle. Personally I am not overly concerned at the moment, but I'm also not going out of my way to test the common cold theory.

Crazy times.

If somebody told you in January that in 2 months the Dow would be down to 20,000, every Apple store would be closed indefinitely, just about every western nation would have their borders closed, and people would be hoarding toilet paper, you likely wouldn’t have believed them.
Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t have believed it 2 weeks ago.

Exactly. It's not the death of all people and it's not the common cold. However I would much rather we take drastic measures since its impact on some is very harsh.

The irony about the other guy in here telling us to feel for people with cancer (which I do, obviously) is that the industry he/she/it/whatever is upset is closing down is often the cause for increased rates of cancer due to the extreme damage caused to the environment from production of those goods.

I completely agree this is NOT something to panic about, but I also say NOTHING is worth panic. Panic simply means a lot of bad choices will be made, however decisions based on sound reasoning (which many places ARE using) is important.

I don't think most would have. The world changed overnight, literally, for many.

Don't be so sure. After a few months of lockdowns or near lockdowns, how many people are going to have jobs to be able to afford electronics, let alone Apple products!

A lot of people need to conserve money at the moment, not buying nice-to-have purchases! There are more important priorities at the moment.

Yup, portents are every country is going into recession hard as we speak; quite possibly even more sharply than 2008. This isn't going to be your usual V shaped downturn, the damage from this is going to take a long time to put right again and people are going to have spending priorities other than buying the latest iPhone.

Maybe it's just me, but the Apple stores closing due to this virus seems to be the least of anyone's problem. I'm happy that the employees are continued to be paid, and they should open when it is appropriate. If you have a problem, there is still a way to contact Apple online, or buy online. If we have gotten to the point in this world that Apple stores being closed is catastrophic, we have some deep seated problems.
