Here's the thing: If they look after shareholders at the expense of actual customers, then eventually the shareholders get burned too. It's something that Steve Jobs understood instinctively. So all this talk about 'doing it for the shareholders' is a flawed concept. At the end of the day, everyone will lose with this approach.
This kind of long term thinking is becoming anathema to current corporations. Too many stockholders only care about this quarter's numbers. Focus too much on long term (at the expense of short term profits) and you'll have the big shareholders clamoring for your removal. Tim understands this, he know who keeps him in control.

We have reached the point at which "thin" equals "fragile." I went to an apple store and examined these in person. Without a doubt they flex when applying pressure from opposite corners. With all things considered I decided to buy the 2nd generation ipad instead of this... I'm very happy with my decision. Are we buying pieces of fine jewelry to be admired or are we buying consumer electronic devices that enable us to be productive and get things done?

Indeed. A product must be fit for purpose.

Why would Apple replace it if it’s normal?

They'll "tell" you its normal, even when it's not to escape replacing..

They know they changed the process and as the result this happened, but by saying its 'normal' they basically get their way out of any liability.

This is the *part* where Apple listen's to it's customers like they say they do :)

Lol, I posted this nine hours ago in a different thread.

AppleCare is getting increasingly useless with the number of shameful design defects Apple unapologetically ships.

Tim apologists have nowhere left to hide.

That's solid advice. I've never opened anything at an Apple store before. But that would take the stress out of getting an 11" for myself if I choose to at some point. I have a 10.5 right now, not truly needing an upgrade.

You said you opened it prior to payment though. I'm surprised that Apple let you do that.

Is it? I live in Singapore, so I am not sure if different countries have different practices. When I purchased my 5k imac last year, the sales assistant actually opened up the box and showed me the contents before I paid for it. I requested to do the same with my ipad, but I admit that was because I was admitedly a little spooked by all the bendgate news, and just wanted the peace of mind, and they acquiesced. I didn’t feel that there was anything amiss.

I acknowledge that this is not feasible for online purchases, which is why there are still some stuff I prefer to get physically from stores.

I have always physically inspected all my purchases whenever possible, either before paying for them (in the case of clothing), or before leaving the store (for stuff like fast food; I have had situations where the cashiers left out some of my orders and I have thankfully able to remedy this on the spot).

Just so it’s clear, I am in no way saying it’s acceptable to have a bent iPad, nor should anyone have to live with one. It is what it is, so should anyone here be unlucky enough to end up with one, immediate exchange or return it. My iPad Pro still looks fine, I am using it in tandem with the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil and enjoying it very much, and I am crossing my fingers that it stays that way.

And at the same time, I think the vitriol being aimed at Apple here is quite disproportionate, which kinda crowds out the possibility of having any sort of productive discussion whatsoever (like maybe the physics of how such a phenomenon might be possible).

Maybe this was touched on (and subsequently buried) under the weight of over 400+ responses here thus far, but any manufacturing experts care to touch on this?

Next iPad Pro will be Stainless Steel?

Or can we finally see a Liquid Metal product?

In any case, I'll stick with my Gen 2 and wait for next years mysteriously strengthened version.
Okay, you got my upvote for saying, "Liquid Metal". Thought this forum had forgotten it's prior obsession ;)

We are holding it wrong and now we are suppose to believe our ipads should be bent?
The new Apple sucks and they think we are all idiots that will believe anything they tell us.

I was going to buy an Apple laptop for Christmas, but I think I'll hold off for a while longer. I could get a decent gaming PC for the price of one of their laptops, and I don't really need portability as much as I used to.

I don't feel like rewarding a company that behaves like this, or their decisions and prices for the 2016+ MacBook Pros.

I’m pissed about Flexgate (happened to my 2016 nTB, search for it in MacBook Pro sub forum), and the eventually-will-fail butterfly keyboard.

I ‘love’ macOS and the Retina display but not happy with the hardware. So much so I’ve never more strongly considered getting some other laptop and just dealing vs another Mac portable when mine is crapped out and out of warranty. The design looks nice but its not built to last at all. MacBook Pro’s shouldn’t be disposable like that. its unsettling

The headline reads, “Apple says some...”
"Some" is anything less than 100%. So the defect rate could be 99.9% and the statement would still be technically truthful.

Not that I'm saying it is 99.9%. Just pointing out that the vagueness of the wording seems unlikely to be an accident. Moreso given the world-class PR, marketing and advertising resources available.

Forum trolls out in full force today. Meanwhile we still have the same two pictures circling the web and a bunch of macrumor newbies claiming theirs was bent.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I agree-

The Russian bots have received the bendgate transmission and we’ve been instructed by the Kremlin to express dissent against staunch liberal Tim Cook as a disinformation campaign from Putin himself. As well as a flagrant ‘siege against the press’ and all

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Edit- what’s sad is someone will take this comment seriously

And Apple saying bent iPads are normal, you forgot that one.

Where are the real members posting their pics on this forum? Or anywhere? People may have received a bent iPad by a manufacurinf defect as Apple claims. But where are people actually bending it?

You are so far removed from the situation you cannot be the judge of what’s true

Some suspect it is caused by the heat of the chip behind the screen. One thing can be confirmed is the location is on the same place. It is around the centre of 2 inches above the bottom of the screen.

See:

The demo unit in HK Apple Store is having the white spot at the same location.

I predict apple will release a software fix which will throttle to reduce heat to prevent white spots and chassis bending :)

What are you talking about? How am I not a "real member"? And how am I removed from the situation, I bought a 12.9'' that was curved right out of the box and already returned it. I'd say I am part of the situation.

It's not a defect because . . . it is an unwanted/unintended negative side effect of manufacturing? Isn't that a . . . "defect". I mean, it's literally defective. It is meant to be flat. It isn't. That's a defect.

Defect - A shortcoming, imperfection, or lack.
