I don't see what the big deal is. I can see/understand asking Apple about it but if they tell you it's not a defect, either keep it or return it.

Those who want one will buy one, and those who don't, won't.

Tim Cook needs to go back to his old job, and Scot Forstall needs to be CEO and also bring back all the engineers who have left after Tim Cook became CEO. Tim Cook has had his run, and has proven where his priorities are.
when Bertrand Serlet left the company I knew Apple's great engineering was going to go to ****, and that it was a symbolic sign of things to come.

Those who are old enough should remember 'pixelgate' (my own wording). Customers would return computer monitors due to having 'defective pixels'. The issue got so bad that manufacturers of the screens, instead of making the screens perfect, they realised they could not without incurring increases in manufacturing costs, so they decreed that there should be a 'pixel standard' on what is and isn't acceptable and it was suggested that 5-6 dead pixels in a brand new screen is acceptable. Anything higher and the screen would be considered defective.

Consumers were disgusted but the screen manufacturers got their way. A manufacturing defect which they were not prepared to solve suddenly became an accepted standard. Now in many user manuals, you will see clauses that say 5-6 dead pixels in your lcd display is perfectly acceptable.

Therefore, if Apple is allowed to say that the bend in the ipad is acceptable, which it obviously isn't, how long will it be before other manufacturers follow suit and start saying minor manufacturing defects are the norm and perfectly acceptable.

Were you guys able to come up with an idea as to why it’s happening, and whether or not it’s inevitably going to happen to all of them? Trying to decide if it’s worth keeping the one I bought a month ago from Best Buy, I have until January to return it.
I don't think all iPads will bend over time, I am assuming if it is not bent now it shouldn't bend later unless you apply force.

Sure, maybe some...maybe a lot...maybe few-to-none. Who knows.

FUD aside, the reality will be in the numbers, something nobody knows right now but Apple.

If it still bothers anyone, go buy a Surface. Just don't update it...

Funny you bring that up. I used to have a surfacebook and when I replaced it one time it was bent. They immediately said that shouldn’t happen. So we opened two more boxes and they were slightly bent. They gave me my money back because of it. Even Microsoft understands that a bent computer straight out of the box is defective.

So, Microsoft did the right thing...and Apple won't. :scratches head:

In addition to upping their design and manufacturing game, apparently Apple needs to up their PR game, as well. Regardless of how wide-spread this issue is (or is not), talk about a tone-deaf response. SMH

Sorry to hear some people are having issues, but you’re drawing conclusions from a very limited sample.

But is that really the point? I don’t think it’s necessarily the ‘unspecified sample’ that we don’t know how many affected units there are, but the fact that Apple’s response is agitating enough for those that may not support their products in the future for something like this. The reason being, is not necessaurly the bend, but the fact that they may not replace the device saying it’s normal for those who are contemplating purchasing the iPad, they likely won’t do that now or will hold off. This issue will affect iPad sales in some form or another, but to what magnitude, we don’t know.

If Apple would have said, “The bend is normal, but we will replace the iPad for the customer if they have concerns or experienced bending”, then that probably alleviate some of the negative rhetoric as you’re reading in here.

I'm glad to be free of caring that much about these new iPPs. Let's just say I'm not surprised by Apple's stance on any of this...the iPad was always second-fiddle to the iPhone and it will always be that way.

Posted this earlier on a thread in the iPad forum:

Purchased a Surface Pro 6 on Black Friday from BB - $999 i5 8gb RAM, 256gb SSD w/Type Cover. With over $530 AMEX points saved over the years, the final cost was about $560. (Bought a 400gb SD for $80 from Newegg as well.)

Had considered the iPP 10.5 1tb ($200 off) as well as the iPP 11 during that time before deciding.

I have no need for the pencil and I've been using the SP as a pure consumption device for now though of course it can do so much more. I've been using it in tablet-mode to read my comics and watch movies up to now. Very happy with it...no regrets buying it whatsoever.

Pros:
- SP6 i5 is fanless
- Upgraded display
- Much better battery life over previous models
- Kickstand and TypeCover (with Trackpad) are wonderful
- SD card support

Cons:
- a very small one...the battery loses 1-2% every 24 hrs even when asleep

Reasons why I didn't choose the iPP:

- with Bendgate being very real on the new iPPs and with Apple acknowledging it and even downplaying/excusing it, there's no predicting if/when the next refresh will be and whether this problem will be addressed then.
We're possibly looking at a 2 year refresh cycle meaning 2020 to see something new or improved. I'm not waiting that long, sorry Apple.

- Too many iOS shortcomings and little hope for meaningful improvements.

Seven years have passed since I purchased my ipad 2 and we're still waiting for core functionality extensions beyond the pencil.

No mouse or pointing device, unable to plug in USB drives and do anything beyond importing photos (beyond silly if you ask me), greater access to the file system to customize/organize locations & workflows, allow more than one application per file type, etc.

If you want to believe ios 13 will offer significant improvement to address some of these issues, you can hold out hope. I'm moving on.

Very much looking forward to using the SP6 on the plane and on my travels, etc...it will be eye-opening compared to a very limiting iPP.

lol.. the guy in the video mentioned "the casing of the Apple pencil is not meant to come off" but then you see him strip it off

"You broke it" (That'll never work again)

Maybe you REALLY should reconsider how you use and handle your things. My MBP is 2+ years old, goes with me everywhere, and doesn't have a single scratch.

People complain about the weirdest things and want "perfect" products, yet I see what feels like every second iPhone with a cracked screen. Hypocritical.

That being said, it's also not like Apple products never had any "issues" before. People must keep in mind that these are mass produced items. And yes, I'm very very certain that other companies have similar or other issues and tolerances in their products, but just no one's paying attention. Observation bias and internet amplification. How many of those complaining on this thread have actually personally seen a bend iPad? I've read about maybe 2 or 3...

Dead pixels.....seriously.... (yes, there has been and always will some tolerance for dead pixels with all manufacturers....just one example)

Well, it's always easier to blame the CUSTOMER (why did you need to put really in caps?). I have not been using it different than my MBP 15 2015, and this new material just seems to be more sensitive, + the color, it's just terrible for me personally, cause i need to go from office to office, see what problems people have with their computers, run virtual machines on mine at the same time, type some notes, go under the table, go to the serveroom, patch things and on and on, i'm using it on the go, and now i'm scared to move it at all. If u are using it different, then good for you, i guess? Why should i reconsider how to use my 5k machine? Should i adapt my workflow to how apple wants me to use the machine, or use the machine how i need it, i don't get it?

I'm just saying it wouldn't have been bad to know, hey, your new machine is awesome, looks good, but be careful, the material is more sensitive. Is that so bad to ask?

Some of you are making it sound like Apple is releasing iPads out of the factory looking like a crumpled piece of paper when in reality a 1mm deformation from one side to the other is not that big a deal. Honestly if not for articles like this how many average consumers would have even noticed the issue?

TBH I think the bright spot on the screen in the 2017 iPad Pro is a bigger issue than this, because you can’t avoid noticing that!
