One positive of the recent slowdown and doom&gloom analysis that followed is that lofty, unrealistic expectations of unicorn world-changing-devices-every-second-year have been nuked down to reality.

You're completely missing the point. They aren't even updating the specs. They're using 3-year-old CPUs, no proper video card, no ports, etc. It doesn't take much effort to refresh the specs. This is the richest company, and they can't afford to put a modern CPU in a MacMini. I'm an engineer and I understand how hard design is, but even noname Chinese brands are updated regularly.

Could they be waiting for the new AMD CPU Zen?
Supposedly able to match or exceed Intel's.
And cheaper compared to Intel.

Well what ever the case...Apple we need a faster / efficient macbook and no more hard disk...pls...
rMBP !!!!!!

Or you're only as good as the last product Steve had a hand in.

Being a very, very old MacRumors lurker (from the very start of the site), this line of thought always baffles me.

Steve Jobs used to be criticized TO DEATH for this or that; he greenlit things like the Motorola ROCKR; imagine what would happen today if Tim Cook made something so wrong, on so many levels.

The Cube G4 was killed after just one year; the puck mouse was embarassing. The iPod hi-fi, well, let's just forget. And the Antennagate, made worse by some stupid comments from Jobs that are still in use today as memes.

The narrative in in-between periods like 2006 was that Jobs had lost his magic touch and Apple as a consequence was doomed.

On the other side, we have Tim Cook, who tripled Apple's revenue, and Apple's market cap.

He is not perfect, because nobody and no organization is. Not even Steve Jobs.

I think they've built the pipeline like a ring similar to the new campus... It's going round and round and never sees the light of day. Maybe Angela Ahrends can introduce exclusive shoes at the Apple stores too. It will draw more traffic :p

Try to imagine a possible reason for this. I have my idea, let's just say, see you again in September.

Apple is investing all it's time into their car project; which will undoubtedly fail.

What's interesting is that every single product Apple has created or is working on was envisioned by Steve. Car, watch, iPad, iPhone, Desktops...all his vision.

Yeah, how dare Apple create a computer which can be connected to a desktop setup with a single cable (by combining charging and data in one protocol). How dare Apple create such standards (USB-C and TB3) that allow for this.

Your argument for a single USB-C port doesn't make sense. Apple could have added a USB 3.1 and you'd still have the 'single cable desktop' without needing a dongle away from your desk to use a USB device.

What good is a laptop that is ultra portable if you need to pollute your bag with dongles to make it effective away from your own desktop?

Pretty shameful for the nearly most expensive laptop in its' class to have 1 USB port that makes you pick between charging the laptop or using an external device.

If that is innovation and forward thinking, you can keep it.

Apple is out to separate fools from their money now (they aren't even trying to hide that now). They are just incapable of delivering an industry shifting product anymore.

You're so right about the whole issue. Apple still thinks it's got the upper hand as being known as the most innovative brand of the world. But reality has struck so many people. Apple here in Europe has lost its cool.

Agreed, but I'd go closer to 90/10 on the not knowing side. About the only thing we truly do know is that Apple has tightened up on secrecy a couple more notches, and left the rumor sites gasping for air.

See, I'd like to believe that Apple are pouring more R&D into this 'car' project than we yet know about, and that when it gets revealed we'll be stunned and amazed at just how far gone it is. Imagine if they unveil an entire car with fully thought out and implemented systems and technology, similar to what Tesla are doing. That would be worth this wait. Or maybe they think they've found the 'next big thing' and they're itching to show it off. But what do we all need in our lives at this point? Who knows?

On the other hand, they could just be developing CarPlay. There may be nothing big coming. They may literally be on a slow down.

It still annoys me the bare faced lying to the public.

He stands on stage and says to the worldwide public "We make the best computers we can"

Yet, he takes a desktop PC (iMac) fits a laptop low end GPU, and a 5400rpm physical hard drive.

Sorry Tim, But I don't like people who stand there and basically lie to my face.
In essence, Apple is a company that survives because of its lies. They are exceptional at bare face lying and deceiving the public to the point where lying could be seen to be the very essence of what the company is about.

It's important to understand that there are two different sides to Apple: the image they portray to the public, and the real company behind that. The image to the public is that of a company that loves tech, produces premium products, cares about design, and cares about the environment and people's privacy. But, the real Apple is much nastier. This is the company that tries to hide the real state of their products behind deceptive made up tech words such as "Retina" screens, that mean absolutely nothing, the company that uses manufacturing companies with suicide nets because the workers on the bottom floors didn't like the thuds of all the people leaping off the roof to kill themselves. They are the same company that makes products that effectively CAN'T be recycled, or repaired. They gimp their products with things like low memory, and then they have the audacity to charge a ridiculous price for an "upgrade" to what you should have received in the first place. They manipulate public opinion by only making their products available on release to reviewers who have a history of giving favourable reviews and target and backstab those who give bad reviews (I've experienced this). They have a highly manipulative marketing campaign designed to produce cult like behaviour. It's not an accident that there is an almost religious type of regard that a certain percentage of users have towards Apple and their products - this has been done deliberately. Apple are extremely arrogant and greedy, and don't care at all about the user experience beyond it being a way to fleece more money out of users, who they regard with utter contempt.

In essence, Apple are a vicious and ruthless company, hidden under a lie of respectability.

I've been an Apple Fan Boy forever but when you see this in writing, "It has been 447 days since the last MacBook Pro release, while the MacBook Air has not been updated beyond a RAM bump in 518 days. Mac mini: 662 days. Mac Pro: 963 days." you can't help but wonder WTF Apple?

Well, a lot of that has to do with microprocessor chip supplies. If you're wondering why there have been no Mac updates for some time, take a look at Intel's product pipeline issues for your answer.

But one thing is for sure... It's still in the pipeline

I'm puzzled why no one comes right out and asks Tim Cook if they ever plan to update the Mac line. With so many people dying to know, why are people so afraid to ask him if/when they have a chance?
If he says they have no intention of doing so, why are they updating the Mac OS? He owes it to all of us who have stuck with Apple from the beginning and pushed their products for decades.

Yes, this is much better than the Steve Jobs days at Apple, and it's above mentioned world changing devices every second year. o_O

For all the shilling you do across multiple sites, I really hope you're paid, Cerla.

Mac>iPod: it took 17 years
iPod>iPhone: 6 years
iPhone>iPad: 3 years

But of course the iPad was developed before the iPhone so it was readily finalized as standalone category.

I have been on this site forever, as it's my primary source of quality Mac news. Last year, I decided to partecipate to the conversation, because I thought and I think I have something insightful to say from time to time, as soneone who's on Macs since the 7100.

Your post is offensive, and it does not contribute anything to the conversation.

I have no idea where all the R&D money is going, though I am far from convinced that it's for the Apple-branded car MR seems so certain is coming (and apparently even knows what it will be called). One thing I can be sure about though is that Apple isn't shoveling all that cash into an incinerator in the basement at One Infinite Loop. It's going to develop any number of products that we have heard nothing about, and haven't been picked up by the rumor mill because Apple keeps secrets better than the CIA.

-They try their best to create the best products they can, and for all their faults, they have a fleet of products which are all basically at the cutting-edge.
Oh my, I admire your loyalty to the brand old boy but I don't think anyone would ever accuse the current line up.of being cutting edge. 720p screens in 2016, 16gb storage options, 5400rpm drives. One day if you are lucky battery life in the AW. Putting a fancy. Bow on something doesn't make it cutting edge. Have a nice day..
