iRapture?

LOL. Ironically, just heard someone talking about the rapture. I don't have any clear times for you though, as no-one knows. Not even Apple

Personally, I think it's just an Apple windup. Someone's bored in the boredroom, sorry boardroom and some wiseguy pipes up, "I know, let's announce some extended retail meeting on may 22. I wonder how many pages we'll get on Macrumors..." :D

I hope it's a 10th anniversary sale! I've been waiting for the back to school sale start, but maybe they will have something better.

iRapture?
EXACTLY!

On May 21st, Jesus will come and take all his believers to heaven. Then, the day after, May 22nd, Steve will take all his believers up to iHeaven with it's rainbows, unicorns and white iPhones (but only if you've downloaded the iRapture App, free from the App Store. We'll use Garageband to play harps, and use Angel Apps to give us all wings and halos.

As for those who never really believed and get left behind on Earth...we'll Facetime with them from iHeaven.

I'm predicting iCloud, and refreshes for MB, MBA, Mac Mini, and/or Mac Pro.

Those who are saying it's likely nothing: Why block out the windows, lock the cell phones in a back room, and force a confidentiality agreement?

UNUSUAL SHORT NOTICE -- This meeting had a one-week notice. That is not normal. Most 'all-hands' meetings have a one-month notice.
WHAT IT MEANS: Something has changed recently in the marketplace and Apple is responding.

LOTS OF OVERNIGHT EMPLOYEES -- Includes all visuals staff, a manager, a business team member, a few Genius team members, one back-of-house employee, and a few generic Apple specialists. This overnight includes more employees than normal. It also includes more hours. The iPad 2 launch overnight had very few employees, no black curtains during the night, and no cell phones taken away.
WHAT IT MEANS: Lots of bodies means lots of physical things manually being replaced. Note it says "all visuals staff" will be there. Add the black curtains and you can expect to see a store on Sunday that looks very different from the day before. Definitely new banners and new main displays.

NOT A LOT OF GENIUSES ON HAND -- Only a few Geniuses will be there overnight.
WHAT IT MEANS: Not a lot of technical information will be learned overnight so no new technology will be released.

ONLY ONE BACK-OF-HOUSE EMPLOYEE
WHAT IT MEANS: Only one person working on stocking means that there will be no new physical item that will go on sale...or at least not in stock.

NO MAJOR APPLE ANNOUNCEMENT PLANNED BEFOREHAND Apple doesn't have any media events planned this week.
WHAT IT MEANS: Nothing ground-breaking new will be released on Sunday.

US ONLY This is only happening in the US.
WHAT IT MEANS: It only applies to the US.

SUMMARY:
  • No new hardware
  • Nothing new physically to sell
  • Doesn't require the geniuses to absorb much info
  • Lots of changes to banners and displays
  • Response to something that has recently changed in the marketplace
  • US Only

ANSWER: A T-mobile iPhone is the only thing I can think of that would satisfy all these variables.

EDIT: T-Mobile Plan Updates Set for May 22 (http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/14/t-mobile-baking-fresh-prepaid-plans-may-22-adds-more-4g-data-fo)

could it be sprint and t-mobile both launching together on sunday?

I just remember the iPod Classic is way overdue for an update or being discontinued... I know it isn't likely happen but I leave it here as a reminder for the discussion.

....iCloud or Lion will surely have a media event, and Mobile me is not "hardware"

Yeah, but "hardware" doesn't necessarily mean it has to be "hardware" to sell. I was thinking more along the lines of new display "hardware."

Gee, they could just be having an anniversary sale. Hence the NDAs (prices) and the dark room curtains. New prices don't need much in the way of back-room help or Geniuses.

Or they could just be putting up balloons to go along with the birthday cake complete with iCandles.

Nahh - that's no fun.

The New hardware is the sacrificial altar of course. Did you think Apple got rich just by designing good product? The employees that are required to be there are either the high cultists or the perfect victim(s).

What happens behind the Black Curtain STAYS behind the Black Curtain!

Black curtains

They're to keep the Apple staffers at the 59th Street store in New York Cityfrom looking out.
Or, maybe, to cut the reflected glare coming from those light-reflecting screens that might frighten the carriage horses by Central Park.
:apple:

ya, seems most likely. no real chance they are doing some major announcement on Sunday.

arn

Why the need for the black cloaks then? Apple's back-to-school promo coming out a couple hours early wouldn't justify that effort, would it?

Flashes of all the hoopla surrounding the intro of "The Beatles" on iTunes keep coming to mind.

This time it's either Elvis or The Monkees.

...

I don't think it's the back to school event with black curtains and all, esp. if hardware is under lock and key.

It would be swell if this was for Lion and new hardware. I'm keeping my eye on the Mini and the MBAs.
