May 22nd is a Sunday. No self-respecting retailer is going to release anything on a Sunday. The entire point of releasing on a weekday is to get into the news cycle.

Lots of video games are released on Sundays. I don't think this fact has anything to do with Apple's plans for this Sunday. Just wanted to point out that some self-respecting retailers do it.

One day only...all prices rolled back to 2001 prices to celebrate the anniversary!

Wait, I think the prices were actually higher back then. Nevermind.

Since the world is ending on 5/21/11 I guess they want all their employees to be together?

Or 10th Anniversary iPod?

Whatever it is, I think I can wait until 5/22 to find out.

iCloud and

MobileMe re-launch. A 1GB training manual and black curtains around the store? Not a normal "team meeting" I think. The best way to turn people on to the iCloud shift is to play with it and be "in" it in the store.

A Flip on a stick

I'm going to try and attach my daughter's Flip camera to a pole and hold it up above the height of the curtains to see what's going on inside. I doubt they will go all the way to the ceiling.

Other Countries?

If it's something so major and secretive, how come it's not being done in other countries too? Usually, we see an announcement of a product, with the message it will be available in x number of countries at a later date or something....

It may just be something US based for now, which I think rules out anything major like new hardware, world's end or Steve's retirement etc...

... and Apple said, "Let there be iCloud"!

Putting all the pieces together...

UNUSUAL SHORT NOTICE -- This meeting had a one-week notice. That is not normal. Most 'all-hands' meetings have a one-month notice.
WHAT IT MEANS: Something has changed recently in the marketplace and Apple is responding.

LOTS OF OVERNIGHT EMPLOYEES -- Includes all visuals staff, a manager, a business team member, a few Genius team members, one back-of-house employee, and a few generic Apple specialists. This overnight includes more employees than normal. It also includes more hours. The iPad 2 launch overnight had very few employees, no black curtains during the night, and no cell phones taken away.
WHAT IT MEANS: Lots of bodies means lots of physical things manually being replaced. Note it says "all visuals staff" will be there. Add the black curtains and you can expect to see a store on Sunday that looks very different from the day before. Definitely new banners and new main displays.

NOT A LOT OF GENIUSES ON HAND -- Only a few Geniuses will be there overnight.
WHAT IT MEANS: Not a lot of technical information will be learned overnight so no new technology will be released.

ONLY ONE BACK-OF-HOUSE EMPLOYEE
WHAT IT MEANS: Only one person working on stocking means that there will be no new physical item that will go on sale...or at least not in stock.

NO MAJOR APPLE ANNOUNCEMENT PLANNED BEFOREHAND Apple doesn't have any media events planned this week.
WHAT IT MEANS: Nothing ground-breaking new will be released on Sunday.

US ONLY This is only happening in the US.
WHAT IT MEANS: It only applies to the US.

SUMMARY:
  • No new hardware
  • Nothing new physically to sell
  • Doesn't require the geniuses to absorb much info
  • Lots of changes to banners and displays
  • Response to something that has recently changed in the marketplace
  • US Only

ANSWER: A T-mobile iPhone is the only thing I can think of that would satisfy all these variables.

It's not as if Apple HAS to follow this night up with a release. For example, it could be preperations for Lion release, where all the 'behind-the-scenes' hardware (did you know hardware includes more than just computers and computer parts?) gets updated. Where in one night, they install alot of stuff to make the transition go smooth whenever it is, as well as train their employees about alot (not necessarily all, though) of the new stuff coming.
Same applies to iCloud instead of Lion.

So yeah, I do think it's for Cloud or Lion, but not an actual release.

How do you arrive at T-mobile iPhone without new hardware? If it were simply an announcement, Retail wouldn't need to do anything.

Hm, i can't think of any hardware that could be coming out. MBP and iMacs just refreshed, the Airs are supposed to pick up production late this month.
iPods are usually in the beginning of fall.
It could be Mac Pros or Mac Minis but neither of those are the big sellers, so i don't see them pushing them through an event.

Well.. there have been reports of Apple demanding their employees to be available that weekend. So the one-week notice isn't as strict as you say it is.

You don't need lots of staff to roll out an updated product, especially if it's a new Mac Pro or Mac Mini, etc...especially if it's a form factor change...

...but most likely it's their 10th Anniversary Event...the first two Apple stores opened May 19, 2001 in McLean, Virginia, at the Tyson's Corner Mall, and at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, Calif.

So probably lots of possibilities, including the Cloud/Mobile Me/new record deals, etc. along with 10% discounts and all sorts of deals, etc.

Plus, it could also be part of a store refresh in look, screens, and other decor for the 10th Anniversary.

More things are pointing to the 10 year deal.
