So it's just a $50 difference between the s5 and the iPhone 6.

......and 150 for the moto x? I think there point was is that you can find an s5 32gb at 650 which is the 16gb iPhone standard price.

So what does that have to do with 16gb being useable, which this thread claims is not?

A lot I would say. When you fill up the 16gb and it becomes unusable, you can cheaply add more making it usable again without deleting stuff.

You just mentioned the S5 was 50 dollars less expensive. 64 gb microsd is 35 bucks or so. So for 15 dollars less then the 16gb iPhone 6 you have 80gb on an s5. 128gb microsd is 100 bucks, thats 150 dollars cheaper then the iPhone 6 128gb model.

Apple Screwing its Customers Re: 16 GB

Samsung didn't screw its customers like Apple did to its loyal fan base/repeat customers.

Even though Samsung S5 starts its lineup at 16 GB, it is expandable and costs less to begin with. Samsung Note 4 phablet starts its lineup at 32 GB and is also $150 less and the storage is expandable.

With the size of apps and enormous IOS, it would be very hard to get by with 16 GB today compared to yesteryear.

Apple use to care about it consumers, however, that is no longer true.

iSheep will eventually realize this as I certainly have as well Apple Fanboy John Gruber.

People need to learn to be objective to see how things really are instead of follow blindly.

I'll ask again, how did anyone get screwed? If you bought it I'm assuming you bought it knowing it was 16gb? I wanted the 16gb but went with the 64gb because for $100 more I got 4x more storage. I'm sure a lot of people did this. I'm actually happy that Apple made the 64gb cheaper. You know they can't please every user, but I'm sure that move pleased most.

On the flip side of your post, you could have gotten 2 times the storage and not be out an additional $100.

Try to re-read the article objectively and you will understand what the beef is with Apple and 16 GB.

BTW, I purchased a 64 GB and I am sure John Gruber didn't buy 16 gb, yet he has a valid argument.

Don't you like it when someone buys something and the blames the retailer for their purchase? No one was holding a gun to your head when you made the purchase. You screwed yourself. You could have bought a 64 GB for the price of last years 32GB. Image

Bingo?

1) people like my mum, she has used about 1gb max in two years of using the iPad. She browses, face times and like looking at pictures of grandkids. She will never need more than 16gb and liked a cheap entry point.

2) people with low disposable income who want to own an iPad and accept the limititation.

This. My grandpa doesn't need more than 16... heck even 8 if the OS didn't take up so much! Giving everyone 32 when they don't need it is a waste. Giving b people 64 for the price of the 32 seems like a fair trade.

My take on this is that just factor in that you'll have to get the 64GB version and pay $100 more. The 16GB is honestly useless so just see if the price you pay for the 64GB is worth it to you or not. If it's not, then buy another brand. I personally decided it's worth it and bought a 64GB iphone 6.

Struggling to see the issue. You get 64gb for the previous price of 32gb.

What you are missing is Apple can keep the cost of the 16gb one at the same price as previous years (avoiding an inflationary rise) because that base price is subsidised by people paying extra for 64gb.

There are two main groups who will go with 16gb:-

1) people like my mum, she has used about 1gb max in two years of using the iPad. She browses, face times and like looking at pictures of grandkids. She will never need more than 16gb and liked a cheap entry point.

2) people with low disposable income who want to own an iPad and accept the limititation.

If they made 32gb the base then group 1 wouldn't care as they don't know what a gb is. Group 2 would be delighted. Except for the fact that they may not own the 32gb iPad because they couldn't afford it. Without the extra revenue from all the people who didn't go to 64 because 32gb was enough the base price increased.

you missed 2 groups and they are huge... the businesses & Education. When most companies buy a phone for their employees they buy the entry level. Because they are purchasing it for them to make calls and get email, not to play flappy bird. So, the 16GB model had to stay at the lowest price point to continue to capture that market. Same with education, more and more schools are issuing iPads to students and they are typically the 16gb a.k.a the cheapest.

I fixed this problem for myself by changing the kbps in iTunes, it sucks but it'll have to do until i ca upgrade my phone again.

If I could have gotten my hand on a 64 probably would have bought it.

Now, I am looking at how I use my phone. Every now and then phone call. No music, no video. Maybe 100 photos that I transfer in there.
Lots of internet. Not too many texts or apps. View e-mails.
I have an iPad for when I travel with movies on it.

Hope to get a 6, 16gb in a few days.
If it had been offered, I'd have gotten a 32 though.

(upgrading from a 5)

In the past I always purchased the 16GB model. It was mainly due to not needing to store my music or videos on my phone. Now that the iPhone is more advanced, I found myself taking a lot of photos and videos and needed more room. I went with the 128GB model with the iPhone 6. It's basically twice the on contract price of the 16GB model but to me it was well worth it. It is nice being able to load whatever I want and not have to manage storage.

Except it would seem like 16GB is not enough since people can't upgrade iOS without having enough space. Apple makes camera better and adds a cool shooting modes for it which increase file size. Sorry but 16GB version should have been dropped and replaced with 32GB. This is supposedly premium cellphone. It costs more to buy retail or with plan. Greed will kill this awesome brand

16GB is enough for a lot of people, I need 3G for songs, and 5G for photos, that's it, I don't like keep tons of APP and games that barely use. But if I want, I can fill up 128GB phone easily too

I have purchased every iphone (except the 4.7" 6) and ipad (except the 4th gen and the new air 2) and have always gotten the 16gb versions. (Total 10 iphones, 5 ipads) Never have had any issues where I cant do something due to low memory. Turning on icloud photo library helps with this as well as it saved me quite a few gbs of space. Not sure why so many people think that this is a huge issue.

I have always had 16gb iphones but decided to upgrade to 64gb gor my 6+. I still have about 45gb free space on that. I'm thinking 16gb would have been enough since i dont use it in the same way as my ipad which is 32gb but stuffed.

That's the price people pay for being cheap.

If you'll remember, when they moved the iPhone 3GS, 4 and later 4S down to the free tier after their successors came out they were only available in 8gb storage.

Well take some comfort that the future holds only bigger and bigger file sizes :D

maybe in the future it will be 32GB base, with 128GB the next option then 256GB and we'll all be like, 64GB should be base:rolleyes:

I have to laugh at everyone saying to just use iCloud. Do you guys think everyone has unlimited data plans?

Obviously Apple are abusing their loyal customers here. The normal way of tech is that specs increase every few years because for the same BOM better specs are possible.

My first Power Mac had 128MB RAM. Does that mean Apple are insanely generous when they slap 4GB RAM into a base 2014 Mini? Of course not, because 128MB RAM back then was far more expensive than 4GB of RAM is today.

It's funny people use the word greed and rip off. Apple is a for profit business. They will charge the price that will maximize profits. No one says greed will one day kill Chanel or Armani or any other luxury brand. I also think it's funny how people focus on the 16 go issue and call apple greedy but neglect to mention the industry high profit margins on the products as a whole. Why not complain about the total price? Why not beg Apple to lower the price of all Apple products 100 bucks because they are rich and margins are high?

You can vote with your feet and buy a Samsung with removable storage if you think they are a better value, enough people do it and Apple will adjust. Fact is most people are fine with 16 right now. Most of my iPads are 16 gb and they are fine for my use.

Of course it is premium. These phone LITERALLY COME IN GOLD. If thats not premium no phone is.

Think about just relative to its own market competitors.

A "non-premium" phone is something like this:

Image

On a larger scale, how else would you consider anything premium? If its not Gucci or Prada or Rolls Royce? Then no electronics are premium by that measure. Nor MacBooks, iPads, Samsung, anything. Maybe some HiDef Home sound equipment or a $20K Sony 4K projector?

You can even get premium burgers at Burger King, relative to a regular burger.

Think about that. Premium can be in anything.

Maybe you guys are confusing "premium" with "luxurious."

But even for that it would have to be something custom made beyond the scope of regular consumers if its gonna be better than an iPhone 6 Plus. There is nothing on the market more premium than that.

You want a "premium luxury phone" then buy a Vertu. Guaranteed to impress other idiots.

You want an insanely great product, buy a Mac or iDevice. Well, most of them for a little while longer at least...

People are starting to use the "greed" word in association with "Apple" because some of their recent products reek of short-term profit motives. Jobs also demanded high prices, but one never sensed he was trying to cash in on previous successes. That's how I see the Mac Mini and iPad Mini for now, at least. Crass abuse of Apple's loyal fan base. This sense that they can just wrap anything in Ive's designs and sell it at an inflated price.

16GB iPhones rub me the same way to a lesser degree.

No iPhones are cheap, dude.

This argument is borderline obnoxious. No one ripped you off. You bought an iPhone in 16gb knowing that it was a 16gb. If you don't like the 16gb, don't buy it/return it.

Sincerely,
a very happy iPhone 6 plus 16gb owner. :apple:

You've summed it up perfectly. We all have the choice which model we buy. The 16gb is the base model and has remained the same price, it's just 32gb owners got a good deal with the 6. If 16gb is not enough, buy the next one up. If 16gb is enough, enjoy your phone I say. There is always cloud storage as an option. :)
