Advanced Access is quite a sleek name for a name grabbing business.

Wonder if they applied for the trademark before the 2017 presentation or whether Apple just felt a bit too safe.
Doesn't matter. What AAT did was legitimate business.

The real question is; What are all Apple's lawyers and marketing people being paid for, if they couldn't have seen this coming years ago.

So Apple announces in September 2017 but doesn't apply for the trademark until Summer 2018? Forgive my ignorance but is this standard practice?

They talked about the product on stage, even mentioning the name so one would assume they'd have registered the trademark the day after the keynote...

The only thing that is the least bit surprising about this new apple product is that its name does not begin with i.

Why should it begin with “i”? The Apple Watch is it’s own product, just like the HomePod, AirPods, etc, those are all recent products that do not include the “i”.

If you look at some of the starting products, like the [iPhone, iPad, iMac and iPod] were namely under Jobs reign when the “i” was more pronounced.

I hope this debuts today or at the event on Monday, I'll be annoyed (to no avail) if it doesn't. It's the Age of Entitlement.

All of the impatient fanboys are the source of the drama

Paying someone for the name is disgusting? You guys are running out of Apple criticism material
You must not have read the summary that says they filed an opposition to the other company being able to use the name.

They could have approached that company about buying it instead of using their lawyers.

Apple trying to steal the name airpower. I'm not surprised. Apple stole the apple name from the Beatles. It's in Apple's dna to steal.
FYI, The company name "Apple" has absolutely NOTHING to do with The Beatles. And you have the username... "macfacts". Oh the irony

Considering it has zero competition and is exactly what some people are looking for, calling it overrated is probably as far off as you can be.

Zen comes in all forms, including something as silly as a charger. This product will do a lot for me.
Its the problem with society.

20 years ago no one would care about a charger. Nowadays we are so damn lazy that we "NEED" such a thing as a charger.

Meanwhile, I'll be happy to use a cable as I have no desire to but this with Apple tax. I would rather use that money for something little more meaningful (like put it towards a new computer or a phone - I'm still on iPhone 6) :)

What’s a problem with society? AirPower? To each their own about what they value in life. Some people with multiple Apple wireless charging devices might look at AirPower as a convenience option.

20 years ago in 1998 the world was different. If one doesn’t adapt they will end up like the dinosaurs.

My comment was about how spoilt we became. Not about adaptation.
Sure, we can adapt but we should adapt to better.
Silly example :) - as kids we used to climb trees and have all sorts of fun outside. Ask a kid now to climb a tree and you end up in a hospital. :-D
Yes, I get that its convenient but the attention it gets is crazy. I see your point though.

A pretty specious claim, in my opinion. Does Apple think that every name starting "AirP" rightfully belongs to them for this reason, even if another company already has the legal rights? Advanced Access Technologies could use the same argument to claim that Apple shouldn't have the AirPlay, AirPort, AirPods, and AirPrint trademarks because they would interfere with its "AirPower" name.

If "Advanced Access Technologies" were actually making any products, I might agree. But I can't find a single thing that company makes.

Perhaps you are a better searcher. Can you locate a single product that AAT actually makes? Any products that they license to other people? What does this company even do?

The US Air Force has been using the term "AirPower" since becoming a separate service in 1947. I don't see how anyone could "own" the term for corporate use.

Apple is quickly becoming a drama queen. While they were fighting for a name Samsung has releases a dozen or so wireless charger models (granted they started much earlier but still). Why does a simple accessory like charger need a special name? It's just a QI wireless charger (just an expensive one).

And people who can't afford it even at half that price, or have no real interest in the device, will continue to whine. On and on and on.

I'm whining because I don't want to pay $300 for a commodity charging pad that's $15 at Ikea?

It's not a matter of having the money, it's a matter of not being that stupid.

Because Apple is a fashion brand that sells commodity products at 10 times the price. It's all about naming and marketing for them. Why is a Louis Vuitton or Birken bag worth 100 times the price of a similar looking bag at Walmart? Because these companies literally spend 8-10 times as much on marketing as on product production.

Even Apple's biggest fans around here like to compare Apple to a luxury brand. Apple does run the company in a similar way. It's all amount marketing and image, the product is irrelevant.

It’s not just a Qi charger. They will explain it when it’s released (soon, apparently). It can do things that no other Qi chargers can do.

I don’t agree the product is irrelevant, Apple does its homework.

As far as marketing look at the now pulled Samsung champagne waterproof commercial. They (Samsung) were doing what you say Apple is doing.

Ultimately, it’s a charging mat. It will charge multiple items, and you don’t have to put each device in a specific area, but there are already charging mats that will handle multiple items. For many people it will be down to cost. If they can buy something cheaper then that is what they’ll buy. A few will buy just because it’s Apple. Some won’t buy it because it’s Apple. I guess I fall into the might be interested depending on the price category. If it’s cheaper than buying 2 or 3 individual chargers, and the competitions mat doesn’t make me look stupid buying an item that has the name Apple on it, I probably will buy one eventually.

for me an option to charge the phone in a semi-vertical position is crucial. there are so many charger out there with that option that it seems silly to not have that. i would prefer an apple product, but not if it's more expensive and doesn't do what i would like it to.
