Nice. When you connect an iPad the information that used to be in iTunes is now in the finder window.

Nice. I always thought this is how it should be.

However, presumably those who don’t (can’t) update to the latest macOS will still manage their iPad/iPhone through iTunes?

My iMac is on El Capitan and my MacBook is on high sierra and neither can be updated beyond that. However my iPad Pro will be updated to iPadOS (I wonder what consecutive versions will be called? Or is it known as iPadOS 13?)

Also how will (iTunes) backups be handled?

You cannot install the beta of iPadOS 13 without macOS 10.15, but I assume the final will be OTA as usual.
Apple will surely update iTunes (or create separate macOS app) for iOS 13 USB backup, same goes for Windows users.

Is Apple ever gonna drop the gimmicks and get back concentrating on making the core MacOS experience better ? An OS should be BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE about providing the best and leanest base layer (it's the point of an OS), apps (itunes and stuff) and side-features for iOS users really should never be hardwired-packaged into the OS and unremovable.

If the only thing Apple has to say about their new OS version is how the bloatware is reorganised to try lock Mac users into their golden iOS cage, it feels like a desperate move...

Can someone please see if Wifi Sync for devices still works? I have my iPhone and iPad setup to sync over wifi so they sync and backup without me needing to remember to plug them in.. Will be unhappy if this has disappeared
I've just checked Finder and my phone is showing as a mounted device and is accessible (pretty much the same as what used to show in iTunes). It's not connected by cable and I have bluetooth on both devices off.

PHEW! haha. Thanks for confirmation.
My 1st gen iPad mini (stuck on iOS9!) is also showing and it didn't need to be connected with a cable first.

I only keep this iPad in case I really mess up with the betas and need to use facetime or something on a working device :)

Does this version of macos support stereo homepods? Before only iTunes could play in stereo on homepods.

Is it a stable release?

So far it seems to be stable. However Preview can't open any PDF's on my mac and obviously some third party apps like little snitch, Fuse for Mac OS and MS Powerpoint don't work properly or not at all.

Nonetheless, the whole system feels faster (especially Safari)

PDFs work for me as do all the MS Office 2016 apps.

Maybe my update from Mojave messed something up. Will have to try a clean install. Thanks for letting me know!
Are you getting errors or are the apps crashing? At first, my .docx (MS Word) files opened in Textedit and I had to change the association back to Word.

I tried to reproduce the situation which led to the error message in powerpoint, but I could not get the error a second time. (I opened a file from dropbox where multiple users can edit the same file)

Preview for example won't show an error. It neither opens files if I try to open them via finder, nor through the File->Open option within preview.

And Little snitch got deactivated as you can see below.

So I'm assuming older OS like High Sierra are stuck with iTunes?
Yes, which is kinda a good thing I might argue.

Won't download on my mid 2010 Mac Pro with Radeon 7950 Mac-edition, i.e. officially supported on Mojave.
Not Catalina supported then?
Will download on iMac late 2017 (duh)
2012 and above are supported by this new release in general, with Mac Pro being one year later, 2013. No more 2010 Mac support for Catalina.

Wondering this as well.
Yes, sort of. Actual files remain where they were before, but the file links are added to books app now.

How buggy is it?

Oh, a little one here, a little one there but nothing that can't be faced. In fact (and I don't know if it's just an illusion) Safari seems to be faster than previous versions... Most of the applications I use frequently are working without crashes. Paragon and Tuxera are not even installing though...

Can you buy me a lifetime subscription to CC please, because Catalina won't run CS6.

o_O

Adobe: just $69.99/mo. No need for lifetime subscription. /s

Some people says adobe has updated some CS6 apps to 64bit for a bit better support. Photoshop is one of them. Not sure if your app is included.

The Books app works like it does under Mojave. You can have your own library and you can edit tags but you CANNOT manually transfer the books to your device. You must sync. Since I have never synced before, if I try to do it now all my 5404 books will be deleted from my iPads. Thank you Apple.
Same for AppleTV, no manual transfer.
For those of you who care about such things I can confirm iMazing still works and can be used for transfering.
For my part I see no compelling reason to leave Mojave. Besides the above mentioned reasons I frequently use Quicktime 7 and I cannot live without Dragthing which I use many times daily.
