Why on earth would anyone want that?
Pardon my hyperbole. IMO, Big Sur Notification Center is utterly frustrating to have on my computer. It’s basically useless. I used it all the time before Big Sur. The changes they made (no quick reply, no Interactivity, merged widget and notifications pane) make no sense and the user experience is horrendous.

From 9to5mac, in regards to Homepods being set as default output

With macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta installed, the system now shows a HomePod pair as a single option in the sound output list instead of showing each HomePod separately. Once you click on the pair of HomePods, the system will automatically use them to play sounds in stereo mode.

The feature is not yet working consistently, but it’s still a big step forward compared to the experience Mac users have had with the HomePod so far. It’s worth pointing out that this only lets you use two HomePods to play stereo sound from media like music and videos across different apps, but system sounds will remain playing only on the built-in Mac speakers.”

There are threads about the issue on Reddit and other sites, many others are having this issue. I have a 2018 Mini with SSD and 16 Bg RAM. This should not be an issue and wasn't prior to Big Sur
Have you tried doing a clean install of 11.2? I know that my 11.1 installations were sluggish and not at all impressive. Then I wiped the ssd and did an internet-based reinstall. Since then things have picked up significantly.

9to5Mac is reporting that this beta allows users to set a HomePod STEREO PAIR as the default output. Huge if true, and this feature alone will get me off of Mojave.
This is indeed true. Best update for me in a long long time. Worked in logic to Stereo HomePods tonight and also listened to Tidal on my Mac through them without having to cheat workarounds for everything.

Just hope that power delivery hubs will stop killing m1 macbooks and this is not hardware mess up.
Have you experienced any unusual heating issues? In the past few days the top lid of my M1 MBA has become hot when closed either when plugged in on not. I noticed a huge battery drain tonight when laptop was closed and unplugged. Dropped to 25% even thought not being used. I wonder if it is Big Sur 11.2 or a battery/hardware issue.

This is a sample of what has become of Apple's attention to detail now. This is going on since the start of macOS Big Sur betas. You hover your cursor over these tabs and the entire strip gets highlighted instead of the tab you are hovering over. But hey, new devices are coming to keep us distracted. I really wish they would stop this mad annual hardware race and get back to fixing their software first and foremost to be free of such nags that are not expected of Apple. This is not a bug, this is simply lack of attention.

The same goes for Save or Open dialog boxes where sidebar is pushed to the left and I resize to show titles properly every single time. But hey, new iPhones and new hardware.

And yes, separate feedback has been submitted for both of these issues.

I reported that last summer. Still not changed… I don’t know how it’s possible.

Same goes for Save and Open dialog boxes. Sidebar is pushed to the left, obscuring the titles. You resize it, and next time you open it, the same issue. Both of these things are going on for a long time now. In 4 months we will have a new macOS version for God sake. They should really either employ more people or stop diversifying so much and screwing their software quality.

Anyone had this happen before? Computer seems to have updated- it rebooted but after entering my passcode I got this setup assistant screen (black screen) with a spinning ball. I let it sit for close to an hour and nothing happened. Had to power cycle to get it working again. 2017 iMac 5K. Thanks

Interesting on reading this thread how buggy catalina still is.

I hope the next release of macOS focussed on primarily bug fixing /hardening the system, fixing the UI fails (notification centre etc).

And on improving catalyst and bringing over more iPad/iPhone only system apps (weather) - and on allowing devs to easily do the same.

Let’s have it being an engineering focused release rather than a feature driven one.

It’d have to be more reliable than it is with an Apple TV. I’ve given up using it there as it disconnects so often.

That's a hardware limitation, not a software one.
But a simple one to overcome. I use my MBP M1 with two monitors. One natively through my OWC TB3 dock, and the other through a cheap daisy-chained DisplayLink adapter. (You can purchase HP ones refurbished and cheap from AliExpress).

It works perfectly and without any issues whatsoever.

Why do you assume this behavior isn't intentional?

I really don't see how the two are related. Adding more resources to software quality won't be accomplished by reducing resources from hardware.

(I suppose they could reduce the software release pace, though.)

I just opened an Open dialog, resized it, made the sidebar wider, closed it, opened it again… my changes were retained.

OK this seems like a weird bug; really hoping it's not an intentional change: I'm reading a daily email from a newspaper, and usually control-click to get the option to "Open Link Behind Mail." Now control-click just offers "Open Link," and the link opens in the current message window in the Mail app, replacing the contents of the email with the linked article. I can't seem to revert back to the email itself without closing the message and re-opening it.

Can anyone else try this and confirm?

1. Why do you assume this behavior isn't intentional?

2. I really don't see how the two are related. Adding more resources to software quality won't be accomplished by reducing resources from hardware.

(I suppose they could reduce the software release pace, though.)

3. I just opened an Open dialog, resized it, made the sidebar wider, closed it, opened it again… my changes were retained.

1. 😂

2. This is how the two are related: if you do not release new devices annually, the software team gets to focus on fixing software on the current lineup, not also have to take on optimising software for the new hardware. Like I said, and like you said, the effect is just that. Either reduce software development pace to bring out better optimised software, or hire more people.

3. You're a lucky one. I have to resize the window for these dialog boxes in all my apps. All. And even then, occasionally, they go back to their "native" state. Changes revert to that "native" crushed state randomly. This could be device-dependent, which takes me back to point 2 again.

I rarely post negatively about Apple here, be it software or hardware, because in general I still am far more than satisfied. It is only when I compare Apple's quality of today to the quality of yore that I feel the untoward difference, and some times post about it here.
